Kate Fox is not your ordinary run of the mill sheriff. All she has ever wanted was to work on her ranch. But when Ted (her ex-husband) decided to run for reelection, she decided she had had enough of him, his roving eye, and his ineptness in solving crimes. As luck would have it, she chose to run against him and won! Now she finds herself facing some down time with everything quiet in the community.
This story didn't grab my attention as much as the prior books in the series. because it didn't start with a crime, but with a strange woman coming to town and moving in with the brothers. They are hilarious and full of mischief. At the same time, Kate is solving petty crimes (missing items, runaway horses) and of course, her dysfunctional family!
Kate is gutsy when she's solving crime, but when it comes to her family, she winds up getting pulled into their drama with everyone fighting to prove their right. She cannot hold her grounds. If you have watched or read the Longmire series, you will enjoy it. Thank you #Double Back and #NetGalley for the AC!
Double Back is a romance - or is it a mystery?
A woman arrives in town and moves in with two bachelors. The local sheriff, Kate, begins an investigation into the woman's background and intentions.
The book was an average thriller for me. Not intense nor did it captivate me to the point that I couldn't put it down. That said, it is a fair read.
Kate is the county sheriff in small county Nebraska. Fighting with her ex-mother-in-law and her ex-husband, who is the sheriff in the neighboring county makes for a lot of drama. Fun book, but the high school type drama seemed over the top and at times overtook the story for me. Good story, but overall a bit overdone. Would still recommend.
Shannon did a great job in this well-written narrative with a solid multi-plot scenario that kept me immersed in all aspects in this story. The mystery was nicely done with a few red herrings that kept me in the game. When I thought I knew what was going on, the author changed directions, more to the delight of this reader. Boasting a great supporting cast, engaging dialogue and just being with the Fox Family, this was a terrific read and I look forward to the next book in the riveting series that will grip you by the horsehairs.
This is the latest book in Shannon Baker’s Kate Fox series! Against the background of her diva ex- mother-in-law and her entitled ex-husband she goes through the daily life of being a sheriff in the Nebraska Sandhills. When Newt and Earl, the trash picking Vietnam vet brothers, show up in town unexpectedly clean, Kate discovers that a woman is behind it. Kate makes it her mission to identity her home and return her to it while trying to solve the mystery of who is sabotaging her re-election campaign. Hilarity ensues, and the reader is left uncertain whether Kate will continue as sheriff or return to the ranching she loves. Highly recommend this book for a great read!
