A wonderful companion book to The Diary of Anne Frank, this is Hannah’s late-life memoir of her childhood and beyond as she became friends with Anne in Hitler’s Germany. The events told from the perspective of a mature adult add understanding to the musings and comments found in Anne’s diary. The straightforward storytelling manner made for interesting and informative reading.
This is a must read! This book will give you hope, break your heart, and teach you along the way. I loved reading about Hannah’s childhood and her sweet friendship with Anne Frank.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
Hannah Pick-Goslar lived as a neighbor to Otto Frank's family in Amsterdam. She became fast friends with Otto's daughter, Anne.
While there have been so many books about the Nazi invasion and the toll it took on survivors, I feel that this is a fresh take on it. Simply put, not many accounts of Anne Frank are available. This book shares Hannah's experiences, as a very close friend of Anne Frank. It is not easy to try and understand the emotions and perspectives of the two girls during this time period. My Friend Anne Frank is incredibly powerful and moving. It was hard to put down, but also tough to read.
I have read The Diary of Anne Frank numerous times. I feel that the next time I read it, I will read it with a new lens.
This book is heartbreaking in its content and perspective. I would highly recommend this book, and think it's important to share these first-person stories to ensure the world doesn't repeat the atrocities of the past. .
I read this book but wasn’t as interested as I thought I would be. Anne Frank doesn’t play that big of a role. It is more about the author and her family and it’s struggles to stay alive and be free.
Thank you to the publishers for the opportunity to check out an ARC of this book through NetGalley!
As a kid I read the diary of Anne Frank multiple times. Anne's story captivated me and I always wanted to learn more about her story. When j saw this book "My Friend Anne Frank", I knew I needed to read it. I appreciate Hannah sharing her life story as it gave us some added context we were missing from Anne's.
Books like this are so important especially at a time like this. We need to remember our history so we won't repeat it. This book kept me engaged, made me emotional, and I learned a lot.
***** I have received and read an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for giving my honest feedback. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.*****
Books about the Holocaust are always of interest to me, because I'm always learning something new about a time that many refuse to believe happened.
Pick-Goslar's book is definitely one that caught my attention.
While many people have heard of and read the Diary of Anne Frank, this book gives us an opportunity to see how the disappearance of the Franks affected those around them. It also allows us to see what Frank saw through the eyes of others in her area.
If your interested in the Holocaust, I'd definitely give this a read, but I will say that a little editing would have only made this book better, as some of the length could have been trimmed to flow a little better.
This book was enlightening in that we get to hear from someone who really close to the Frank’s. It was also interesting to read what was going on in the author’s family and the rest of the town. Very happy to have read this book.
Writing was great as was the pace of the book. I think I would have liked more pictures though.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by NetGalley
This book was eye opening. As we the reader get another look at Anne Frank from the POV of her best friend.
The Diary of Anne Frank is one of my favorite books ever. So I knew immediately this story would be up my alley but I was unsure how much I'd actually like it. Hannah's telling of a "similar" story but from her perspective was so riveting. Her story gripped me from her having to immediately leaving Germany to creating her new life and hearing of all the life she created.
Im so glad someone was able to capture her story in her own words before she passed away. These stories need to continue to be told to constantly remind us of this time in history.
What a fascinating read. If you loved "The Diary of Anne Frank" you are going to love this book. So many interesting heartbreaking and beautifully written. Such a strong, amazing insights into the life of the Frank family and the family of author, Hannah Pick-Goslar. The book is very well researched and takes you right there to the streets of Amsterdam
this was a heartbreaking, eyeopening read that everyone should pick up asap
Hannah Pick-Goslar gives a great account of the friendship that she an Anne Frank shared. This was a hard but necessary story to read about everything that happened in the eyes of a young child then watch her grow into a young woman. She experienced many hard life burdens that a child should not have to be in or witness. I really loved the way that Anne’s dad continued to help Hannah and her sister after losing all of his family. The is book is definitely worth the read. You will fall in love with Hannah and root for her everyday.
Always sad and heartbreaking to read about anything that happened during this time period. However, despite the fact that it's hard to read about this topic, I feel like that's even more of a reason. This story was well written and a different perspective than what I've been used to.
Thank You to NetGalley, Hannah Pick-Goslar, and Little, Brown Spark for the digital copy.
I have always loved reading Anne Frank and any information about her. I was drawn to this book because of it's connection to Anne Frank, they were friends growing up together before the war, but also a memoir of Hannah Pick-Golsar. It covered her life before the holocaust, her survival during, and of course her survival after. In a time when many people did not want to speak about the atrocities and some people were in denial that it even happened, it is through brave people like Hannah that we learn information.
I loved this book! From the front cover, to the lovely writing, and all the research that went into this book. I couldn't put it down. I would definitely read this book over and over.
I was really enjoying this book! The history and the other side of what might have happened to Anne. I am really disappointed that I ran out of time reading this book and will not know the out come right away.
The Diary of Anne Frank is a story that all school-age children read at one point or another. It tells the story of the Holocaust from the perspective of a young girl, showing the terror, the terrible injustice, and the astonishing humanity of the Jews who were targeted. In her diary, we are spared the terrible details of the concentration camps that Anne's family eventually perished in and the harrowing atrocities that were inflicted upon an entire group of people.
Hannah and Anne were close friends as children. Both of their families fled Germany for Amsterdam, thinking they would be safe from Hitler in this neutral country. She paints a vivid picture of their life before the war, and we follow her family as they go to extreme measures to try to escape to safety.
This firsthand account is remarkably told, and it gives the reader an actual glimpse into what the Jews endured. The story is hard to read but it is imperative that this narrative is shared widely, and the details of the suffering need to be known to prevent this repeating in the future. Hannah has become an advocate for sharing her story, one of the last survivors of the atrocity that occurred, and she has brought invaluable awareness to the suffering that the Jewish people endured. Her bravery and resilience is astounding, and her love for her family and for her people is evident in every page.
I love reading memoirs, and lately, I have been obsessed, more than usual, with reading about World War II, The Holocaust, and The Jews, through Memoirs. This one delivered, and more.
Thanks to The Diary of Anne Frank, which is one of my all-time favorite books, I have had the chance to discover many other books topic related, including My Friend Anne Frank, by Hannah Pick-Goslar, which was one of Anne Frank's best friends.
Hannah tells us her, her family, and her friends' story, before, during, and after The Holocaust, including of course her friendship with Anne. It was so fascinating, as it always is, to read a book written by a survivor of this horrific period of time. Not only because it gives credibility but also because at times it really is hard to believe that there were actually survivors. I can only imagine how it was to live in that period, where even a little bit of hope was hard to gather.
I loved reading about Hannah's family, especially her relationship with her father, how much love and admiration, and respect they had for each other, even more so after her mom died. Also, how protective and dedicated Hannah was to her sister Gaby, always trying to make the environment around them as much normal for Gaby as possible.
I was happy to see that even for a brief moment, under the circumstances, Hannah and Anne were able to meet again. I wonder if they both felt a little less lonely in that moment. Loved how Otto Frank, Annes' father, reached out to Hannah after Liberation, it was good to see that the bond between them continued and how in many ways, they helped each other in the grieving and lots process.
I truly enjoyed and loved reading this book. I am thankful for the opportunity to have received an early copy. Highly recommend.
Thank you Little, Brown, and Company and Netgalley for the Advanced Free Copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was a spectacular read, I couldn't put it down. I was a kid who couldn't stop reading about the holocaust, especially anything related to Anne Frank, and so I've been aware of Hannah for a long time and jumped at the chance to receive this ARC. Hannah's memory of her life as a young girl during the holocaust is amazing, and her friendship with Anne Frank is awe-inspiring and heartbreaking. This is a must-read for anyone who has treasured Anne's story, or who gravitates towards true stories from WW2.
Hannah Pick-Goslar’s story is all too familiar about the horrors of the Holocaust. It is a compelling, heart wrenching and in some ways heart warming story of the impossible tortures humans can impose on each other and how the author survived scarred by physical and emotional abuse. On the other side she shows how human kindness of others helped her and her sister survive. The added interest is that she knew Anne Frank and in revealing her own story she added to that of Anne’s. This book is an another important story about the Holocaust.
