Unfortunately, I read book 2 first. I liked it, but there are a lot of characters in this series and it would have been better if I had read this one first.

I enjoyed the book and seeing how Emilia gets her start in Scotland. Her exact age isn't mentioned, but she's 40+ and it was nice to have a mature professional character handle mid-life without a partner or children with common sense and grace.

There's a huge clue which kind of killed the mystery for me, but there was good reason for there to be several plausible suspects.

I enjoyed this one enough to think about re-read #2 (Death at a Scottish Wedding and putting The Christmas set book (#3) on my wishlist.

I received my copy of An American in Scotland from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

This book was enjoyable. While not fantastic literature, it is exactly what it seems like it will be. It will be enjoyed by cozy mystery readers.

An American in Scotland is the first installment in the Scottish Isle Mystery Series by Lucy Connelly. Dr. Emilia McRoy has decided that she needs to make some changes in her life as an emergency room doctor. After discovering through a DNA test that her origins trace back to Sea Isle, Scotland, she feels that it is fate when she is offered a job in that town. Unfortunately for Emilia, within 24 hours of her arrival she discovers that her new home/office is in an old church with a cemetery in back, has a run in with a local who has a negative history with a local man who shared Emilia’s last name, comes across his dead body when she is on a walk to explore her surroundings, and finds out that her contract states that not only is she the town doctor but also the coroner.

Even though this is a first in series book, the author quickly sets the scene and establishes the background for the characters in this story and moves on to the core of the mystery. As the story unfolds, the author keeps the reader guessing as she includes numerous individuals who have potential motives for the crime leading to a very surprising reveal as to the actual culprit and motive including the revelation of additional crimes that had been previously committed but kept secret from the townspeople. Within this first installment, the author has also established the groundwork for additional installments to continue to build on the variety of relationships that Emilia has begun in this book.

The narrator of this audiobook has done an excellent job of pacing and voice creation for the characters in this book including meeting the challenge of utilizing proper accents and inflections for people from different countries.

I received an ARC of this audiobook from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media and am leaving this review voluntarily.

A great page-turner. The humor of cultures mixing and the enjoyment of different accents were gravy to this adventurous plot-twisted mystery.

This is a typical cozy mystery, so not my usual genre!
We get to know Emilia who moves to Scotland to work as a small town doctor. She is looking for a fresh start. When a corpse turns up she tries to find out what happened.
No easy task in a small town! Hence there are quite a lot of characters to follow, which was a bit confusing from time to time.
All in all I enjoyed the narration by Kimberly M. Wetherell
Thank you #NetGalley #Dreamscape Media for this audiobook!

The first book in a brand new cozy mystery series and it was an enjoyable one. I had a lot of fun reading/listening to it with major credit going to the narrator, Kimberly M. Wetherell, who did great work with the different voiceovers and pacing. The male lead, Laird Ewan Campbell is as wealthy (or even wealthier) as Bruce Wayne and holds a handful of important job positions in the town of Sea Isle. Him being handsome and Scottish are added bonus points.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publishers Crooked Lane Books/ Dreamscape Media and the author for both the e-Arc and audio Arc of the book.

✨RATING: 5⭐️

✨REVIEW: I LOVED this one. As soon as I started, I was transported back to my grandma and her beautiful Scottish accent. I loved hearing all about ins and outs of Scotland while also trying to solve a mystery! The whole time thinking “this poor woman is getting way more than she bargained for” and should’ve read her contract 🤣 But seriously I loved the dialogue between characters and her description of everything. The mystery was so fun to try to solve along with her and I loved the Sherlock Holmes references. I didn’t want this one to end 💗

✨PROS: Written in Americans POV so very easy to follow terminology, etc

Excellent start of a new series, with wonderful twists and turns, amazing characters, and a perfect narrator to complete the package!

Looking for a fresh start Dr Emilia Mcroy left the busy Emergency room scene in America for a slower, quieter practice in Sea Isle, Scotland.
When she stumbles across a dead body her first night there she questions if she made the right choice. She is the town doctor but she finds out is also the town coroner and is now trying to figure out who the murderer is along side a grouchy constable.
However while trying to figure out who the killer is her life is put in danger and the town comes together to show their support for the new doctor. But she must be cautious and figure out who the killer is before they strike again.

I greatly enjoyed this book and all the characters!! This was a great cozy mystery! Had just enough suspense to keep you worried about the character and interested in the story but not enough to lose sleep over.

I look forward to the next book in the series.

This is my first audiobook. I really enjoyed this spoken aloud and I soon adjusted to the narrator switching in and out of the different Scottish accents. The book summary and review is below
The first in a new series in The Scottish Isle Mystery series. Dr. Emilia McRoy (Em) has just arrived from Seattle to start over as a small village doctor in Scotland. She had also just learned through an ancestry DNA test that she has some relatives in the area. The town of Sea Isle seems idyllic and yet she soon learns there is many hidden secrets in this small town. She learns her house and doctor practice is in an old church but everything is very modern and she heads down to the pub, she has an encounter with a man named Smithy and he tells she won’t be long but in town and that McRoy’s can’t be trusted but she also learns that Smithy was suspected of killing one of her ancestors over 50 years ago. That same night she takes a walk and it begins to rain so she rushes to the first building she smells blood and finds the dead body of Smithy. As she is getting ready to go find some help someone appears and it turns out to be her new boss the Laird Ewan Campbell who also happens to be mayor and Chief Constable. Em learns she is also supposed to be the coroner and soon she begins to butt heads with Ewan. He just assumes Smithy fell being drunk but Em knows that it is murder. She also is shocked the next morning when the Constable arrives for Smithy’s autopsy and they find the body missing. This starts Em’s investigation into the murder and soon she becomes the target of the murderer as she must be getting closer to the truth. Em soon becomes fast friends with Mara Wilson the granddaughter of the owners of the Pig and Whistle Pub as well as Abigail (her assistant, housekeeper, technician) and her brother Tommy and Angie. To me this was the best part of the story was the relationships that Em develops with the people of the town and how she grows to open herself up to everyone and really wants to do her best as a doctor. This was an enthralling mystery that kept me engaged the entire time and I really am looking forward to what will happen next in this series. Highly recommend.

I ADORED this book! It made me want to pick up and move to the Scottish seaside! The town & its people sound idyllic! The way everyone takes Amelia in with open arms was so heartwarming! The mystery was intriguing as well & was just the right amount of cosy crime! I absolute cannot wait to read more in this series!!

I love cozy mysteries, so I was drawn in by the concept of this novel immediately. The premise is that an American doctor moves to Scotland to practice after some, as yet unknown, misfortune has befallen her in a previous relationship. Needless to say murder and mayhem ensues, along with plenty of cozy elements such as a plethora of baked goods, pints at the pub, and cups of hot tea and coffee. This mystery is a bit edgier than the traditional cozy with more graphic descriptions of violence and use of profanity. There is the obligatory love-hate relationship between the male and female protagonists, which is frankly getting quite tired and boring. What I liked about the novel was the range of characters, Scottish setting, and the presence of an actual crime to solve. What I disliked was the lack of descriptiveness about the characters (the author never gives an physical description of any of the characters other than the male protagonist being large and the female protagonist being on the shorter side), use of repetitiveness (such as the main character saying "I might have screamed" or "I might have jumped", etc., etc.), and that the main character technically doesn't solve the murder per se at the end. The narrator did a decent job, although her accent tended to drift in to a Transylvania accent when reading male characters. This novel will likely be a fun read for those who enjoy mysteries, but it would have benefited from further character development.

This is a nice cozy mystery, but with a lot of characters.

Dr. Emilia moves to Sea Isle in Scotland to be a small town doctor. She is looking for a fresh start, but ends up finding a body.

I liked that the Doc turns into an amateur sleuth,, which can't be any worse that Laird Ewan being on the case. Wow is it a really small town with some secrets.

I liked the overall plot and concepts, but there are so many people in town to keep track of. At least that allows for many potential suspects, whichbI was thrown off for sure. The middle seemed a bit slow, but the last several chapters redeemed the slow part by picking up the pace.

Overall a good classic style, curl up in a blanket type mystery with good narration and tone in the Audiobook version.

Thank you Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this Audiobook for my honest review.

Irish living, old castles and churches with hidden rooms; loving community but someone is trying to kill the good doctor- Emily McRoy from America. She arrived in Scotland to get away from her hidden past. Not only does she need to fulfill the doctor position but she acquires the coroner’s job and investigator to decipher homicides. Can she catch the killer before she is caught?
Emily McRoy settles down in the small tow, Sea Isle, away from Seattle’s city life to be the doctor. After a dead body is found, she must convince the police department and towns people that it was a homicide. The bodies pile up while someone fights to keep secret.
Narrator Kimberly M. Wetherell is truly gifted in her ability to switch between accents, personas, and characters. She was very easy to follow in pace and rhythm. She provided lots of emotion drawing you into events, causing you to forget where you are. I thoroughly enjoyed her storytelling style and will search for more books by this narrator.
Overall, this was a very charming book. I did not want to miss a single detail. This thriller was a puzzle and I did not figure it out until the second it was revealed. I loved it!
I would recommend this book to mystery and thriller lovers.
