Author Lucy Connelly does a great job creating an enjoyable tale of mystery.
Dr. Emilia McRoy moves from Seattle, Washington to Sea Isle, Scotland to get a fresh start in her life and career. But she quickly becomes entangled in a deadly mystery. This cozy mystery has everything you expect - a dead body (obviously), a nosy investigator overstepping boundaries, a love interest, and a gang of friends to help solve the crime. The writing and narration were both wonderful.
I really liked this story and will be watching for the next installment in this series.

I LOVED this book so much!!! Thank you for giving me a chance to read this title early, I truly, truly loved it. Like the main character, I too found out half my DNA is Scottish via Ancestry DNA. Unlike me however, she got to go live in the quaint Scottish town and find herself home. I loved everything about this story, and the appreciated the subtle inuendo as well. I loved that the characters were older and that they were shown in healthy, positive ways. Also, the mystery kept me guessing the whole way! 5 stars, highly recommend.

I absolutely loved An American in Scotland by Lucy Connelly! This cozy mystery had so much to love. The characters were all so unique and interesting. The female friendships in this story blew my mind. Despite being a cozy mystery there was so much suspense and danger! I was constantly on the edge of my seat worrying about Em. The setting was beautiful and I couldn't have been more impressed. The plot was fast paced and I loved the twist ending.

Making new friends while escaping a shattering heartbreak half the globe away.
From a busy ER in Seattle to being the only doctor in a small isolated town in The Highlands where the nearest hospital is a helicopter ride away is only slightly less dramatic than finding the first real friends Emilia has ever had. And who is this omnipresent and unsettling "laird" who runs this small world and seems to be as rich as Croesus. The characters are each so very real, and with some of the descriptions I swear I could smell the coffee and even the stew on the Aga. The plot is very tight and full of suspense, complete with some amazing twists and dramatic red herrings (and lots of blood!). The publisher's blurb isn't bad, but I don't want to go overboard in summarizing. LOVED IT!
I requested and received an EARC from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. THANK YOU! 12/22/20122
Much as I LOVED the visual copy, I heartily recommend the audio version performed by talented voice actor Kimberly M. Wetherell! Really adds a lot to a very good story! Thanks to Dreamscape Media via NetGalley for this temporary loan. 03/10/2023

I loved loved loved this one! This author did such an amazing job of bringing her characters to life. I loved all the characters and felt as if I knew them. It was a really fun read. It kept me guessing as to who the killer was until close to the end. I look forward to reading other books by this author

I really had hope for this book - and maybe I'm not the right audience as I don't really do many cozy mysteries - but unfortunately, this was not for me. I think I should have managed my expectations for the audiobook as well, since this was an American narrator doing Scottish accents, so that was a real let-down for me. I feel like when American's do accents (especially UK ones) they usually are just this generic middle ground that are not necessarily wrong but they lack real inflection and nuance - that happened here. I'm not going to be to harsh because the narrator was willing to take on a fake accent for like half a book, so I'll leave it at that.
In terms of the book, the setting felt more like what someone imagining what might happen in 'generic Scottish location' - so much tartans and kilts. Em is a bit too ignorant of danger, but also a know it all. I really disliked the secret gazillionaire who has no boundaries, and doesn't listen to other people's boundaries, but it's OK because he knows what's best. Also are there no small town emergencies outside of business hours? Some of the ideas behind the medical set up there in the old church are beyond believable. So many things frustrated me that I started taking notes. I almost didn't finish this and I don't think I will follow the series. Others seem to have enjoyed this, so maybe I am just not cut out for the genre. I would still recommend the book for someone who asks for a cozy mystery. Thank you Net Galley and Dreamscape Media for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

As an American who recently fell in love with the Scottish isles, I resonated deeply with Em’s desire to runaway to Sea Isle. I really enjoyed this first installment in a new series. Em is competent and likable, and the secondary cast of her friends is quirky and endearing. My only bone to pick is that I figured out who the murderer was long before Em did, so I was frustrated with her not seeing the clues that I picked up on. Overall, a series that I will definitely be watching for the next installment.

Dr. Emilia McRoy moves from being an ER doctor in Seattle to being a doctor in a remote area in beautiful Scotland,
Sadly I didn't like Emilia from the beginning. She was not very smart, she kept repeating she had training from TV shows but then she didn't display knowledge of the most basic things about Scotland. She was completely unaware of her responsibilities, she was easily scared but by the same tolken she thought herself to be smarter than everyone and she kept taking unnecessary risks, hiding things from the police, investigating things herself although she constantly saw that she was doing more damage than good and she was overseeing things or oversharing with the wrong people.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read this book!
