This was a sad and suspensful read. I felt like I was in the scenes with the characteres and I really felt their emotions. I will definitely read more by Nolan Cubero!
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
Landlord Gabe Angueira is trying to do the right thing by his family after a car crash leaves his teenage daughter, Megan, in a minimally conscious state. Since the accident, he and his ex-wife Anya have gotten back together, and he's moved them both back in his house with him. Relying on his rental properties for his sole source of income, he spends his days taking providing full-time care to Megan, trying to make up for what he considers his failings as her father.
When Gabe rents out the house on Shadow Drive without collecting rent or a signed lease, he does it out of the goodness of his heart. The older woman who shows up unexpectantly to rent the place claims she needs it for herself and her pregnant daughter. Although he's never been stiffed in the past, he can't help but worry about it this time. After all, he doesn't own the house. Anya does. She'll be furious if he doesn't get the money. But little does he know, that's the least of his problems.
When he returns later that day to collect the rent check and get a signature on the lease, he discovers the windows have been covered with newspaper and some strange man has been digging under the deck. Unable to make contact with his new tenant, Diane, in person or by phone, he goes online to try to find her. Realizing he doesn't know her last name, he searches by her phone number and finds her on Facebook. But the post coming from that phone number isn't from Diane. It's from Sheryl, another name that turns out to be fake. Whoever she really is, one thing quickly becomes clear. She doesn't want to rent the house on Shadow Drive. She wants to destroy it -- along with Gabe and his family. It's up to him to stop her by unearthing the truth.
Riveting, unpredictable, and hair-raisingly creepy at times, Shadow Drive by Nolan Cubero is a captivating read for those who prefer thrillers that are a little dark and disturbing. From the very beginning, eerie undertones give the story a The Twilight Zone-vibe in places while plot twists and red herrings keep you trying to figure out what's really going on.
It's hard to believe this is Cubero's debut novel. He makes writing look easy and effortless, which it never is. Every word, every sentence, and every paragraph flows into the next. The dialogue is never stilted -- or is it really noticeable because you're so caught up in the book. You hear the characters instead of seeing quotation marks. His descriptions give just the right amount of detail. They are never too lengthy or bulky. For example, when he describes Gabe's daughter's appearance after the accident, you'll gasp. His writing is so good, you'll see her clearly in your mind.
Written in first person point-of-view, the entire book is told from Gabe's perspective. The other characters are all secondary to Gabe. They're either shiver-me-timbers creepy or suspicious -- or both. Gabe's likeable almost instantly. In a genre where unreliable narrators are popular in thrillers, Gabe is trustworthy right from the start. He's trying to figure things out right along with you. But nothing will prepare him -- or you-- for the disturbing revelation at the end.
Don't let the unexciting cover fool you. This is a book you want to read. Books in this genre are known for their secrets and twists, but few are as twisted as Shadow Drive. You'll love it.
Every time you think you have the story figured out, another layer is piled on. The characters were not my favorite to read but the story was so much fun.
"In this thrilling debut from award-winning filmmaker Nolan Cubero, a young father must investigate his mysterious new tenant and discover what secrets she's hiding - while trying to keep his own.
Landlord Gabriel Angueira is trying to put his life back together. His teenage daughter, Megan, was seriously injured in a car accident caused by her own drunk driving, though Gabe blames himself. Since the accident he has spent every day taking care of her, reflecting on his failures as a father, and trying to rebuild his relationship with his ex-wife, Anya.
So, when a woman wants to rent the house on Shadow Drive, Gabe hands her the keys without a second thought - or doing a background check. Once she moves in, he discovers everything she told him was a lie: her name, her story, her previous address. Gabe knows nothing about this mysterious woman, but she knows a lot about him - and quickly begins destroying the house from the inside out. Gabe soon realizes she's specifically targeted him and the house on Shadow Drive but has no idea why.
Now Gabe must figure out who this woman is before she unearths his family's secrets and takes down the house - along with his entire life as he knows it."
Here's a hot tip, if you have secrets don't rent to someone without doing a background check.
Shadow Drive is every landlord's worst nightmare. Shadow Drive is also every husband and father's worst nightmare.
Nolan Cubero has written a compelling thriller with Shadow Drive. A man who is managing his properties rents one house to an older woman on site. Well, 'rent' is being generous when there is no lease or deposit. When he returns later in the day, he finds a man parked in the driveway, and the older woman nowhere to be seen.
What follows is a nightmare. While Gabe is trying to learn more about the mysterious lady in his property, he's also dealing with a recent reconciliation with his wife, Anya, and taking care of his daughter Megan who was near-fatally injured when she wrecked her car while drunk. Megan is no longer the girl that Gabe once knew, burns cover her body rendering her incapacitated.
Shadow Drive is the story of how far a father will go to protect his daughter.
While there were parts of the book that dragged with too much backstory, it didn't affect the overall thriller. Every time I thought I had it solved, it switched lanes and went a new direction.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in advance of its release.

A missing person comes down to more bodies in the basement. Quite enjoyed the way this story played out and how one shovel had those involved digging themselves deeper into crime.
The house at 8160 Shadow drive has good bones but the secrets that lay inside the walls are mortifying.
A landlord’s worst nightmare.
A missing person.
A coverup.
A dead body.
My eyes were glued to the pages of this thriller as my mind untangled the horror that’s been secluded inside the house on Shadow Drive. I can’t stop thinking about the surprising ending, the clues were all there but I was placing all the pieces together alongside the main character and the final twist made my heart rate speed up and left me breathless. 😲
Nolan Cubero brought readers the creepiness in this debut novel. I can see this book becoming popular amongst mystery/thriller enthusiasts and I would love to see this turn into either a tv show or movie.
Wow, this was an excellent debut. I’ve been looking for a good mystery for a while and this definitely hit the mark. Every time I thought I had it figured out, another layer would be added. I love how everything concluded and all questions were answered. The writing had a great flow and once I got into the story I couldn’t put it down. Short chapters helped make this a really fast paced read. I can’t wait to read what Cubero writes next! Highly recommend to all mystery fans.
This right here is a landlord's worst nightmare. I really enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. It was so nerve-wracking that I found myself speed reading just to get through it and the anxiety it brought. The protagonist was extremely likeable which made me so much more invested in this story. It has the perfect amount of mystery, suspense, and emotion and I would love to see this play out on the big screen, it definitely has the potential for it. I highly recommend this for any mystery/thriller readers. Four Stars.
