What would you do for the love of a child?
This is a heartbreaking mystery. The prelude provides a little snippet into what is the root cause for the string of murders. Justice was not served, no one was held accountable and now, 15years later, finally secrets and the truth will be revealed of what really happened all those years ago.
This case has additional collateral damage for Detective Gina Harte who is called into the investigation, conflicted with duty to her job and to her granddaughter who she is looking after. Will she finally lose her daughter and granddaughter as a result of her choices?
At the end of book 12, Briggs had arrived on Gina’s doorstep and we were left with a cliffhanger of news he had to share and now Gina is faced with the battle between her head and her heart with regard to their relationship.
This book has it all, a mystery that has you turning the page to find out how all the pieces fit together, the emotional heartbreak of the backstory and continued development of the key characters stories.
I couldn’t wait to dive into this latest book in the Gina Harte series as it felt like being back with old friends. This could be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading the whole series from the beginning for maximum enjoyment.
Was great to get stuck into another one of these fabulous detective murder stories that really get into your head and your heart. Once I had started reading I couldn’t put down and read in one sitting. I know when reading this authors books that once I am invested then everything else gets pushed to one side
These books just keep getting better and better and this was definitely the best yet and already looking forward to the next instalment. These books would make a fabulous tv series.
Love this series. Love the characters (except Hannah) and become invested in their lives. Gina still has struggles in her personal life. She is human. Bring on book #14. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book
Their Cold Hearts (Detective Gina Harte Book 13) is a completely addictive and gripping crime thriller with a heart-stopping twist by Carla Kovach. While reading the action-packed scenes, I thought, "Ahh, what is going on??!!"
News of a body found at a local shelter means Sasha's worst nightmare has come true. It can't be a coincidence that evidence related to the victim has been found at the same location where the most devastating moment of Sasha's life took place. Days later, a second body is found, and Sasha doesn't know if someone is coming for her, but she's certain of one thing: she's next on the list…
Sasha was a good character in her struggles of being a working woman but still struggling as a single person with only one wage coming in and having to buy second-hand items and discount groceries.
I also really enjoyed getting to know Gina more and her interactions with her team. The story was well written, had good, red-herring clues, and kept me reading into the night. The ending was jaw-dropping. I never guessed who the culprit turned out to be.
A great addition to this series, and I cannot wait for more. What is going to happen to Chris and Gina? And what will happen between Gina, Hannah, and Gracie!?
I would recommend this book, this author, and this series. Five out of 5 stars.

Gina is back with a bang, another fantastic read from this author which kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first page.
Great characters, great story-telling just all in all a brilliant read which I can thoroughly recommend, five+ stars from me, well done Carla I can't wait for Book 14.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this great ARC.
I like this series as you always know you're going to get a good, solid police procedural. I enjoyed the setting of a hostel, and found the characters interesting to read about. The pacing was good and the ending was satisfying.
I did think there was a bit too much about Gina's daughter and granddaughter in this one, personally I could not have cared less about that part of the story.
Overall I would recommend this book, it will definitely work better as part of the series (which is great) rather than as a standalone though.
Back with Gina & the gang in book 13. Gina’s taking a few days off to be with her granddaughter, when she gets a call to attend a murder scene. Gina does not have the ability to walk away when there is a killer on the loose. Of course, her daughter will only use this against her. Hannah is my least favorite character in this series. She’s so ungrateful, rude, never lets Gina explain anything, so quick to judge….I just want to slap her! Anyway…..Gina & the other characters are why I read this series, & they don’t disappoint in this book. Another mystery, another murder, & a new investigation. Definitely best to read them in order.
When something has happend to you, something that has turned your world upside down, you want justice. that's only natural. So you count on people who can help you with that: the police. When you get the strong feeling they are not really interested in what you have to say or don't believe you, your world comes crashing down for a second time.
You cannot understand they cannot see what you see or is this case simply not strong enough for them to act? For you though it's soemthing you will have to live with for the rest of your life while those who were responsible can go on as if nothing ever happened.
It makes you mad and when you see they keep on doing what they are without showing the slightest bit of remorse, some even realising they are throwing away the greatest gift they ever received by being selfish and showing no character at all.
That when something inside you breaks...
I can understand the killer's point of view.If nobody helps you, you feel the need to take the matter in your own hands. No the best solution, but I can see where they come from. I can also see the police's point of view. Their hand are often tied and when there is no real proof , there is not a lot they can do.
Sometimes guilty people do get what they deserve and does the legal system what is was made for. Unfortunately some slips through te meshes of the net...
A lot of heartbreak for some characters, but there are some bright lights at the end of the tunnel too. The killer was brutal, but they at least still had some warmth in their cold hearts unlike some others. 5 stars
Thank you
I absolutely love the Gina Harte series and this book is no exception. The mystery’s are always good, I honestly didn’t have a clue where this book was going to end and not in a million years would I have guessed the twist. I’d be lying if I said that it’s the mystery side of things that keeps me coming back though, they are just a bonus for me. I can’t wait to see what is happening next in Gina’s life, she makes me want to scream at the book sometimes but she’s so dedicated that you can’t not feel sympathy for her as well. Hopefully the next instalment won’t take too long.
When a new Gina Harte lands on my shelf, all other books get forgotten!! This series has been one of my favourites since book 1, and each one is better than the next!
There are a few things to note, one being that for a small town, there is an awful lot of crime!! Gina and the team get called to the scene of a crime - a homeless man living in a hostel is brutally murdered!
It was easy to follow, as always - with a really tragic back story.
Running along side yet another murderer there is Gina’s struggle with her daughter (who doesn’t deserve her!) her ex mother kn law (who is a prize bitch) and Biggs - of course - they just need to be together and all will be good in the world! Outstanding as always!! Gutted it’s over!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
This is the thirteenth instalment of detective Gina Harte’s story. Whilst on annual leave and looking after her granddaughter her phone rings. A body has been found in a homeless shelter. The pound coin and strange smell have to be significant. Gina has a dilemma though, should she work and solve the case for the victim, or keep her promise to her own daughter to look after the little one.
This was a great instalment. I enjoyed feeling Gina’s turmoil and frustration at not being able to do everything. The suspense was great and twists right to the end. Gina has a strong team, but it’s clear she is devastated at the failure of past relationships.
100% recommend this whole series and looking forward to book 14!
Love this author’s books I’m so sad it's over. I could have read another sixty chapters . . . A fantastic read!
Cancel all plans while reading - I inhaled this amazing book over one weekend and resented everything that kept me away from it! The writing was top notch and the characters were very real..⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Carla Kovach is one of my favourite crime authors and every time I finish reading her latest book, I think how could She possibly top it and yet She manages to bring out another fast paced and gripping story that leads the reader down several avenues before a brilliant ending. My only regret was finishing this one and having to wait for the next chapter of Gina’s life. I wish there was an option to give more than five stars.
Good book! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, intrigue, murder, mystery, serial killer, A great who done it, Great police work, and a few crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
My Review:
Another fantastic book in this fantastic series. This series is one of my favorites and so is this author. I can’t say enough good things about either of them. What I love most about these books are that I am so invested in all the characters and their lives. I feel like I know each of them personally and I would want them as my friends in real life. They all work so well together too and each of their personalities are just right so they balance each other out so well. This is what makes them awesome detectives. You have to have a group of people like this to make the job easier and to catch the killer. Enough of the characters and on to the plot. Who doesn’t like a good killer who done it book where the bodies keep adding up. I know I sure do. I love trying to figure out who did it and why. The why is just as important as the who. I’m often surprised by the end because I could never figure it all out. I get mad at myself because I know the author gave out little hints throughout the book but I never could catch on. That’s ok though, I love surprises. It’s like Christmas Morning every time I read one of this authors books. Now let’s talk about that shocking ending. Never would I have guessed it in a million years. This whole book had my head spinning with all the twists and turns. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough with this one. Every chapter left me wanting more. Carla Kovach thank you for being such a great author and thank you for bringing this series into my life.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Detective Gina Harte has taken some annual leave, her granddaughter, Gracie, is staying with her, and they're having such fun. When the phone rings, Gina isn't sure she should answer it but can't quite help herself. A crime scene is no place for a child, but a man is dead, and once again, her job takes precedence. As a second body is discovered, just days later, the urgency to solve the case before more lives are lost increases, but Gina can't be in two places at once. Unfortunately, whatever decision she makes is likely to be the wrong one.
Book thirteen in this series is as tense and fast-moving as is expected from Carla Kovach, with Gina still fighting her demons and reeling from a recent betrayal. Written from more than one point of view, the crime and history behind it are seen from all sides, which I always enjoy. The main protagonists slip into place easily now, and this was a really good read.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the opinions expressed are my own. I enjoyed this next chapter of Gina's life. Recommended.
This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Housing the homeless is a real problem. When these characters lose their homes, they and their children must search for somewhere to live. The places they are given are not ideal. Mystery and intrigue are at the base of this novel. The characters are sad, and the theme of the homeless is devastating. This is a depressing book about a realistic subject. This would make an intriguing television series. This talented author has written about a subject that most want to avoid.
Wow! Carla Kovach does it again! She delivers every single time. This was a great storyline with perfect characters. The story was tense, exciting and of course perfectly creepy. Started with a bang and didn’t let up. Highly recommend
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
This is one of the best books I've read in this series. The prologue was so enticing and then there were so many potential killers I couldn't put it down. Not only could anyone have been the killer the fact that all the characters were linked in different ways meant anyone could be the next victim. The final denouement left me staggered, always the mark of a good book. I love the characterisation in Carla Kovach's work. Little things like O'Connor's wife sending in cakes make the characters really come to life. I sometimes want to shake Gina though. She may not be a battered wife anymore but she still allows those around her to intimidate her. Everyone from Chris to Hannah are guilty of psychologically abusing her and she tolerates so much more than she should. The fact that this elicits such a response in me is another example of the descriptive powers of the author. I can't wait for the next instalment.
