Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-Arc copy of this novel. A wonderful book that brings horses to life for kids.
~~~ I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review ~~~
I love horses and grew up on a horse farm. This book is a very nice collection of various horse breeds and history. The photographs are beautiful and informative. This is a great book for an horse lover- could serve as a coffee table book or for a waiting/reception area (maybe at a vet). Also, would be a good gift for a young teen/tween horse lover.
From the Azteca to the Appaloosa, Choctaw to the Palomina, Brumbys in Australia to the Mongolian, from rare breeds such as the Polish Konik to the semi-feral Pyrenean Pottok, Horses celebrates a wide variety of breeds from all around the world. Ranging from dressage to police horses, from racing horses to rodeo and polo, the book looks at the anatomy and lifecycle of foals and yearlings, colts and fillies, stallions, mares and geldings around the globe. It includes draft horses and warmbloods, light horses and thoroughbreds, gaited horses, ponies and breeds that have become feral. Each photograph is accompanied by a caption with fascinating information about the characteristics of each breed. Illustrated with 200 outstanding colour photographs, Horses is an exquisitely produced work packed with lively information about this beloved animal.
What an incredibly beautiful book! ‘Horses’ by Paula Hammond and published by Amber books, is divided into chapters: Type of horses, horse anatomy, working horses, young horses and Wild & feral horses.
You would think it is a book like any other horse books, but this one is different and unique, but in a good way! For example, when the book discusses the various types of horses it doesn’t offer an endless list of breeds but categorizes horses roughly in what differentiates them from each other. You have ponies (when is a horse a pony?), thoroughbreds, mustangs, etc. but this book shows which types of horses are typical for which area in the world, and their value to various nations. Each is described in a short piece of text and enriched by numerous beautiful pictures.
The chapter ‘Horse anatomy’ shows the various colorings and markings, and mentions very interesting, small tidbits about horse features. ‘Working horses’ gives you insight in their value and strength in various current and ancient professions around the world. The chapter ‘Young horses’ is just one, big treat since it focuses on foals, again with lots of little insight information and lovely pictures. The last chapter is about the various ‘Wild & feral horses’ around the world, and answers any questions you might have about this special group of horses.
This book has enough information to be interesting and entertaining, but won’t flood you with too much information as to distract from the more than 180 stunning and gorgeous photographs. It is the perfect gift for any horse lover, young and old - actually for anyone who might feel in awe about this noble breed. I can highly recommend it to anyone, it is really a joy to flip through or to read about this beautiful and special creation: the horse. I want this book for myself!
P.S. If my review has peeked your interest and you are planning on going to the book store to pick up the latest edition of the book, be sure to purchase the latest version of ‘Horses’: ISBN 978-1-83886-259-6, since it seems an earlier version was published before, which I haven’t read or reviewed. My review is for this edition. ;-)
"Horses" is a beautiful coffee table book. It's full of absolutely beautiful photographs of different horse breeds, from strong draught horses to small ponies.
Each photograph has a caption about the characteristics and interesting facts of each breed, so all the text is descriptive. There's also a whole section about horse anatomy which was informative. I found this book to be a good reference if one wants some brief information about a specific breed, or yet if one wants to learn how to recognise horses visually.
Other sections were about working horses, young horses (the photos are the cutest!), and lastly wild and feral horses. The order of the sections seemed slightly random but as the book is not necessarily made to be read in one go or even in order, that was completely fine.
I would have loved that book as a kid when I was passionate about everything that had to do with horses.
Definitely a great book to leave on your artfully messy living room's coffee table!
Great beginner book for someone interested in learning more about horses. Beautiful pictures through out as well.
Ever since I moved house and came to live next door to a couple of horses, I’ve been on the look-out for a book about my new friends. I finally found what I was looking for in Horses by Paula Hammond.
Did you know that Shetland ponies were used in coal mines during the Industrial Revolution and many spent their entire lives underground? Or that there are more horses in Mongolia than people? Or that horses arrived in Australia with the British fleet in the 18th century?
Did you know that horses need over a hundred muscles to keep their long necks upright, or that they can see almost 350 degrees in any direction, or that they are born with hooves covered with some sort of capsule to protect the mother, which wears off when the foal starts walking?
Horses is chockfull of fun little facts like those, as well as gorgeous photos to illustrate the different breeds, functions and anatomy. I particularly enjoyed the photos of the young horses and the wild horses, some really stunning pics there. I did miss a bit more information about equine behaviour, if that had been more present, this would have been the perfect book. As it is, Horses is still a fantastic book that I would happily recommend to any and all horse lovers who want to learn more about these magnificent animals, or just look at some beautiful photos.
What a lovely book! Starts with the history of the horse, through to different breeds, markings, jobs etc. some gorgeous photos and lots of interesting information. I would definitely buy this for my horse mad daughter, she would learn a lot and probably read it over and over again. Nicely set out, lots of photos and enough text to keep a horse mad person happy.
This is a really lovely nonfiction book for children from Amber Books.
It’s full of beautiful photos and short explanations about these gorgeous animals. The book is divided up into chapters including an Introduction, Types of Horses, Horse Anatomy, Working Horses, Young Horses, Wild and Feral Horses and of course the picture credits as well.
I do love horses, and even went riding for a very short while, many years ago. I’m quite happy to interact with them if I’m walking past a field and will put my hand out to let it sniff me and then maybe if it’s friendly I’ll give it a pat.
My favourite chapter was the young horses as the photographs were so lovely. Even though there are quite a few horses in Jersey, (we have a race course and race club on the island), I don’t see young horses that often, so this chapter was a real treat, and full of ‘aww’ moments.
Highly recommend for children and adults alike.
This book will satisfy any horse-obsessed youngster. It is chock-full of beautiful photos of horses, and has many interesting facts. Great for browsing.
This book is wonderful! Stunning photos, packed full of information making it both a beautiful and informative read! This would make the perfect gift for a younger person who is getting into horses (this would have been a favourite book of mine when I was young!)
