This book is the third instalment of the Slayton series and continues its supernatural/ crime fiction theme. What worked for the first two books felt a little forced in this particular read. I loved the premise and the beginning chapters are so captivating I couldn’t help but be drawn in to the story.
Sadly though I felt this book struggled to decide which route it wanted to take. Whereas the previous books used that mix to really enhance the story, this one lost its way slightly towards the middle. Again, unlike the previous two there wasn’t much of an investigation which was a shame because I loved the Sarah Noble character and she really shone in the book’s leading up to this one.
Overall it’s a great read and can be read in isolation of the other two. There’s just enough back story to enable the reader to understand the characters and their weird friendships.
I thought that the ending was a bit too long and drawn out. There’s almost two endings to this book. Once where each character summarises and wraps up their story and involvement. And the epilogue which suggests that there could be a fourth book.
The bone house was a great book! A pram is pulled from the lake with bones of a baby still inside. Detective Sarah is put on the case to figure out what happened. This book was creepy with plenty of twists!
I’m looking forward to going back and reading the other two books in the series!
Thank you NetGalley, Embla Books and Caroline Mitchell for the ARC!
I love a good crime thriller and this one is no exception. This is a really good and fast paced story, with plenty of twists and turns and surprises along the way, that keep the story interesting right to the very end. All the main characters are really interesting and well written. Even though I haven’t read the other books in the series it didn’t matter as the story and characters were more than capable of standing alone. One of the best elements of this book though for me were the descriptions of the town of Slayton which gave the story a dark and edgy atmosphere with a slightly supernatural feel.
I have read a most of this authors books and have enjoyed them. When I started reading The Bone House I did not realise it was a series however I enjoyed the story with all its creepiness and twists. It can be read as a standalone as the author gives enough information as a background story to make the reader the feel as though they are not missing too much certainly does not make it any less of a great book. Will look forward to more.
and another creepy/supernatural gripping thriller.
When a whole flock of birds decide to fall dead in a lake in Slayton. The local city council decide to dredge the lake only to from an old pram with baby remains. Detective Sarah Noble takes on the case to find out who the baby is and why she has ended this way?
Cora who recently moved to Slayton, owns the local bookshop called Turn the pages. When she hears about the pram, it is the news that she has been dreading. It brings back the horrifying memories of the time she was at ‘The Bone House’
When Sarah Noble investigates, with the help of forensic anthropologist Sarah and a boy called Elliot. What will they discover, and will Sarah survive after putting herself in danger?
Thank you, Embla books, for a copy of The Bone House by Caroline Mitchell. This is the third book in the Slayton thriller series The author has done it again with this tense, creepy thriller with a supernatural element to it. I loved the storyline you can sense the evil with the town of Slayton. This had me on tenterhooks throughout. I couldn’t stop reading and have read this in a day. This is a fabulous read. 4 stars from me.
This is the third book in the ‘Slayton Thrillers’ series by author Caroline Mitchell. If you’re looking for a gripping thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, look no further than Caroline Mitchell’s latest novel, “The Bone House”. The author weaves a masterful tale of suspense and intrigue, pulling readers into a world of dark secrets and hidden truths.
When hundreds of birds fall from the sky into Slayton’s lake, it sets off a chain of events that left me turning the pages as quick as possible. As the waters are dredged, a long-held secret is revealed – an old pram is pulled from the depths, with the bones of a baby still strapped inside. This discovery sets off a race against time as Detective Sarah Noble, with the help of forensic anthropologist Sophia Hudson and the extraordinary young Elliott Carter, delve into the past to uncover the truth.
Caroline Mitchell once again excites drawing readers into the story as the novel progresses. Well drawn out characters with motives that are often murky and unclear. I was hooked and found myself reading the pages faster and faster wanting to know the tangled web of secrets that surrounds Cora and the bone house.
“The Bone House” is a thrilling read that will leave you gasping for breath. A tense, suspenseful novel that will keep you guessing until the very end. A little different to my normal read but nevertheless gripping and exciting.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Embla books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to embla books and netgalley for letting me review an early copy of this title. It gave me the chills which was exciting. Slayton is a strange place........
When hundreds of birds fall into the lake in slayton, and it is checked, a pram is found with the bones of an infant and rocks tied to the pram. What? Why? Who has done this?
New mother cora has moved to slayton for a new start, but when the pram is found things come crashing down around her. What does cora know about the pram?
Detective Sarah Noble is tasked with the cold case. What is the bone house? Does it hold the answers to slaytons secret? I had no nails left after reading this, highley recommend
I really thought I read most book from this author and started this new book to realize that it's book 3 and Ihadn't read books 1 and 2.
so you don't make that mistake here are the titles of the first 2.
The Midnight Man (Slayton Thrillers, #1)
The Night Whispers (Slayton Thrillers #2)
And the one I've just read
The Bone House (Slayton Thriller #3)
I don't feel missing the first two book took to much away from enjoying this book as I genuinlly didn't know i was starting part way through a series until I come to write this review. So for that I will say it's easy to read as a standalone. I will however go back and read the first 2 book but that is a personal choice.
I've enjoyed much of Caroline Michells books, her storytelling is superb. This is another great read.
As always this has a strong and interesting story line with some great characters. This book certainly has that creep edge to it.
This is the first book I have read from this author and I realise that I have missed previous plots which, fortunately, are well dealt with in this plot. I therefore feel this can be read as a standalone.
The plot is a good one and I enjoyed the eerie witchcraft additions.
Sometimes I felt this book was a little drawn out but it did not detract from the overall enjoyment.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes procedural mysteries.
The Bone house by Caroline Mitchell.
It's the moment that new mother, Cora, has been dreading since she moved to Slayton - because someone knows, and is going to make her pay.
Absolutely brilliant. Creepy and gripping. The beetles bit gave me goosebumps. 5*.
As someone who has only read a few books from this author I must say I really enjoyed the book even with the story being something I wouldn’t normally read. Story kept me gripped and was well written. Now off to download the prior books to catch up! Thank you for the advanced copy to read.
Another fine novel from the excellent and prolific Caroline Mitchell. There are so many strands to her work, so many interesting principal characters, and all engrossing. This is essentially a cold case, precipitated by a strange freak event. When bones are found following the draining of a lake, past events threaten to envelop the village. Apart from a slightly excessive reliance on the supernatural, this is a very enjoyable read.
A twisty tale - one that will keep you guessing.
A woman who lived through a horrible experience as a young child is now an adult running from her past, When a strange phenomenal occurs, a secret is uncovered which brings up a horrible event which starts a chain of events that grows out of control. She finds herself trying to protect herself and her baby.
But who can she trust?
I enjoyed the first two books in the series, but this one not so much. It was quite difficult to follow in places with changes in subject occurring mid paragraph. The mix of crime with supernatural connotations wasn’t as effective as in previous instalments and, although Slayton is meant to be a lakeside resort in Lincolnshire, the sense of place was undermined by the many Americanisms. I don’t think I will be reading any future additions to this series.
These Slayton Thrillers are different to Caroline’s usual books, in that they are creepy with a malevolence running through them and anything is possible. I thoroughly enjoyed this, although some of it made the hairs on my neck stand up, and you really don’t know what is fact or fiction as far as the characters are concerned. A real touch of Steven King sprang to mind.
Detective Sarah Noble is tasked with re-opening a cold case and the events that happened years ago in the bone house, and will she be able to solve what happened? She has help from Sophia, the forensic anthropologist and young Elliot who is wise beyond his years, he’s definitely an old soul.
I felt so sorry for Cora, I think she would have been burnt at the stake in a previous life, and she’d had a terrible life, but now she had a new baby and hopefully things were looking up until ……..
As the publisher states, these books can be read in any order but I think it’s best to start at the beginning to get the full picture.
My thanks to Caroline ,Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
A cold case mystery, The Bone House by Caroline Mitchell is the third book in the Slayton Thriller series. Set in 2023, it causes much local consternation as flocks of crows drop down dead into Slayton Lake. The local City Council decide to dredge the lake, only to discover an old pram with skeletal remains inside. What promises to be a relatively easy investigation for Detective Sarah Noble, gets complicated with its links to the infamous Bone House. The narrative has a strong paranormal undertone with the dark past secrets of the lakeside House of Bones prevalent today. Having not read the earlier books, this is a standalone review of crime mystery that failed to deliver any realistic psychological suspense. Those expecting a quality police procedural may be disappointed as it’s an average two and a half stars read rating. With thanks to Embla Books and the author for an uncorrected proof copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.
I love this book. The storyline was amazing. The characters are great. Couldn't put the book down. Any crime lover will enjoy this book. 5*****
I am absolutely loving this series that is set in Slayton. Not a place I would ever want to live as evil seems to lurk around every corner!
Sarah, living in Slayton, is well known and friendly with a lot of the people in the area which isn’t always a good thing with her being a detective. When it comes to Cora, a single mum who owns the local bookshop, being arrested, Sarah is invested maybe more than she should be and at times lets her own experiences in her personal life over cloud her judgement.
With the case against Cora, things are definitely not as clear cut as they seem. The author has you not knowing what to believe as well as throwing in red herrings to put you off the scent. A couple of times I felt clever as I thought I had worked it out only to be completely wrong. Cora’s past is every bit as fascinating as Sarah’s own which made this an even more compelling read.
The Bone House is another engrossing read in the brilliant series by Caroline Mitchell. I love the element of the super natural that is weaved in although it is a lot more low key in this one compared to the others in the series. The levels of suspense has the reader glued to the pages of the book and kept me guessing throughout. The all important conclusion had me gasping in shock with the surprising revelations. This has fast become one of my favourite crime series. A thriller that is guaranteed to chill it’s readers to the bone!
My thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me to be part of the blog tour. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
Pram dredged from a lake still containing the skeletonised occupant. Nasty. The main detective, Sarah, has to unravel who and why, then what, happened. She has a strange mix of suspects many of whom suffered abuse as children; She's helped by a TV star forensic psychologist and there is the dishy senior detective - neither of whom make much of a contribution other than in the glamour stakes. All rather confusing. The formatting was strange - seamlessly moving from one point of view to another such that your read three lines and thought what? Hope this is because it was a pre-publication issue. I'm sure that it did not help my enthusiasm for the story. I ended thinking an ok read but the supernatural aspect promised never really materialised. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
This is one of my favorite series and this newest installment doesn't disappoint! How can it when it opens up with hundreds of birds falling from the sky into a lake? In Slayton, a town of creepy occurrences and dark secrets, where something like this is just par for the course. But it gets worse when they dredge the lake and find a pram (baby stroller, for us Americans) with a tragic secret of its own inside. The gossip takes off, everyone speculating about who could be responsible for such a terrible crime. But when the perpetrator comes forward, no one can believe it's Cora, the sweet owner of the local bookstore.
But Detective Sarah Noble feels that there is more to the investigation and she's proven right when her friend's son Elliott shares that he's having nightmares and visions again. He warns of a darkness coming that wants to bring pain and suffering, and Sarah believes Cora to be in danger. Or, more accurately, in danger again, as she has a tragic past, barely escaping captivity from the notorious Bone House as a child. Now Sarah is investigating those events to see if they're connected. Can she figure out where the true danger lies before it's too late for everyone?
I just loved this story, like every other in this Slayton series! The characters are lively without being quirky and the slight supernatural aspect feels realistic, not contrived or over the top. The haunting atmosphere of Slayton is beautifully described, and I wish it was a real place because I can picture living amongst these people and feeling right at home with the otherworldliness of the town. I really hope there are more stories to come in this series because I'm already dying for the next tale!
