Witches, demons, vampires, werewolves and fae… what’s not to love?!
I enjoyed this book and it had enough sexual tension and spice to keep me interested.
The two protagonists were so dumb sometimes, but I secretly love berating characters for their romantic blindness and stupidity.
There is a bit of a plot so not just spice, but to be honest, I stayed for the spice.
I will read other books in the series in future.
Demons + witches + murder mystery in an enemies to lovers romance? Sold. I love a good mystery mixed in with romance and I really enjoyed this book. The plot kept me engaged and the sexual tension between Ember and Killian kept me flipping the pages! I can’t wait for the next book with Jade!
I really enjoyed this book.
I loved that it focuses on witches and demons (feels like not a lot of supernatural/fantasy books do). The sisterly bonds helped to make this book. Their relationship is so pure and siblingly - love each other, sometimes hate each other but always have each others backs.
The plot was well done and so was the romance. I enjoyed Killians POV but Embers was way better as you got more of her personal struggle then you did Killians.
Putting fantasy elements in a story theat is set in the real world is always a gamble, and this one took a while for me to sink into the world, but once I did I really enjoyed so many aspects of the world building from Blake. The characters were so realistics, especially given the setting,
Ultimately, I liked the world building, but the plot didn't fully connect for me. I enjoyed a lot of pieces of this story, and I would be willing to give another book a try since I liked the world so well.
The idea for the book was great! Not only do we have a fantasy romance with demons, but also it's mixed with a crime mystery. However, in the majority of the book I felt like we lacked the tension between the main characters. Despite them constantly expressing their desires, something was missing. Also, all of their personality was revolving around two things. Ember on her being miserable or being to stubborn to learn how to fight for herself, despite her magic not working; Killian and his devoted attitude towards denying his feelings and his throne. Nothing more was coming from them.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Bewitched Shadows by Autumn Blake. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.
I was dubious about how much I would like Bewitched Shadows since it took at least 4 chapters to grab me. That said, I ended up really enjoying this book. The characters had good character growth and the world-building was interesting. Glad that I kept reading even though I was tempted to DNF. I give this book a solid 3.5/5 stars.
This was a tough one -
Dialogue was less than engaging, I tried to get past the character names (Ember & Killian INFERNO) thinking as long as the story was there I could overlook that but ... it wasn't.
The constant shaming of Ember and her sexual history was obnoxious.
Thank you for the early copy.
I really enjoyed the murder mystery aspect to this book! I thought the plot was creative and unlike any fantasy book I've read. At first I was a little deterred by the realistic location (New Orleans) and the way the werewolves spoke, written with "dis" and "dat". But I did get drawn into the world and liked the way Ember and Killian's relationship developed. I loved the interactions with Ember's sisters and coven, I felt it added a lot to the characters and their personalities. I also really enjoyed Ember's character development and where she ended up in the end, a far cry from the hot mess we were introduced to in the beginning! The one thing I felt took a away from this book were the sex scenes. Some things felt toxic and cringeworthy and not what I would consider romantic. Unfortunately, I found myself wanting to skip these pages. Overall, this book was definitely unique and I really enjoyed the murder mystery plot!
Thanks you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my review.
3⭐️ this was an entertaining murder mystery, paranormal romance. But good god the FMC was so infuriating and I had a hard time liking her, The MMC was fine and all, a good grumpy alphahole, but he just missed the mark. The spice was predictable and boring.
The plot was simple enough but a lot the sub plots were chaotic and made no sense to the story.
And oh my god all the typos! At one point I wished I had a physical copy of this so I could attack it with a red pen and go to town on the typos in this book.
I did love the relationship between the FMC and had family, the MMCs background story and his POVs but that’s not enough to give this more than 3 stars. Just meh.
DNF: couldn’t get into this one I’m afraid. I couldn’t seem to connect/ like the characters or plot, but will recommend this to reader that will enjoy this.
4/5 stars for Bewitched Shadows
An impulsive witch and a cold cruel demon come together and make a pact in this action packed book.
I always love a good mystery with some romance splashed in there. Ember needs to figure out who’s been killing people so she can get a powerful relic to help her with her powers. Killian comes involved when they make a pact to help on another. They slowly start to figure each other out and realize they might have more in common than previously thought. Working together to catch a killer and on a time crunch made this book a non stop page turner.
What I liked:
Romance mystery
Hate that I want you
Crescent City by SJM vibes in the best way
Banter between the two main characters but honestly Ember was constantly giving sass to anyone
Shadow hands. Enough said.
What I didn’t like:
Sometimes Ember was so annoying with her impulsiveness that you just had to stop and roll your eyes. It got to the point that I’d say of course she’d do that. But once you get more of her story you realize why she does what she does.
I can’t wait for the next book and I’m hoping each sister gets her own spin off!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this book!
I was immediately intrigued by the synopsis, which included two of my favorite themes: enemies-turned-lovers and destined mates. What intrigued me even more was the blend of mystery and fantasy. In the past, I've found that fantasy literature tends to focus on world-building and character development to the point of excess, but this book struck a good balance between descriptive passages and plot progression.
When it comes to the romantic aspect, the gradual build-up from enemies to lovers created a passionate connection between the two main characters, and the book contains sexually explicit scenes. The author's creativity was apparent in the reasons behind these steamy encounters, which added another layer to the book's enchantment. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
I was truly taken aback of how much I enjoyed this book. In my opinion, I find that some spicy romance books lack in character development and world building, that certainly wasn't an issue for me in Bewitched Shadows. I was immediately lured to this book because of the gorgeous cover. I am also a sucker for any book regarding the supernatural and loved that this world included so many supernatural creatures. The book is set in New Orleans with the witches being more of the main focus, specifically four sisters. The mysterious murder plot was a great edition to this spicy romance as I feel like it added another element to make the book interesting and it also helped build the pressure between the two characters. I felt like the witch, Ember, placed a hex on me as well since I couldn't put this book down.
I can't wait for the second book in the series to drop! I'm sensing there will be 4 books in the series about each sister or at least that's what I'm hoping.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book!
I absolutely loved this one, and I cannot WAIT for the next one! This is everything a smutty fantasy lover needs while escaping into the duality of the New Orleans swampy marshes and cold Hellish plane.
THOUGHTS:
- I loved the world-building in this one because I felt like I could easily see every scene. That's most definitely hard to create! Not all authors are able to accomplish the transition so seamlessly.
- The smut is top tier 😂😂😂 This is star-crossed lovers meets an awesome happy-ever-after ending that will leave you wanting the next book!
- The character-building was fun as well. I always love a heroine that's a bit of a mess, and yet really finds herself? Not to mention that when she loves, she really loves. Killian is the ultimate bad boy character, and I'm here for it!! I think we all love a bad boy that's terrible to the world but treats his girl like a queen. But he's also a hero underneath? DE-LI-CIOUS.
**Thank you to Autumn Blake for the advanced reader copy. I received this book for free, but all thoughts are my own. – SLR 🖤
I really enjoyed this title! The romance / fantasy vibes and set in New Orleans? This is amazing. I could see this as the perfect fall read and really am looking forward to reading other titles in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley, Xpresso Book Tours, and Autumn Blake for the advanced copy of this book.
Ember is a witch, Killian is a demon and they team up to catch a serial killer. Any book with magic or fantasy elements and I am all over it. I loved the magic system, the different creatures and magical beings, and all the world building between the different realms. I thought that the two main characters were both so fun and I loved their banter and chemistry! I also felt that the addition of the murder investigation gave this book a fun edge that I haven't seen a lot in the paranormal/fantasy world. I really loved this book, it was fun, witty, spicy, intriguing and an overall great read. The plot and the characters keep you hooked into the story the entire time and it was a good time to watch the characters grow and develop through the story.
Looking forward to the rest of the Belle sisters stories!!
I hadn’t read this author before, but I was intrigued by the blurb so I had to try it. I admit that I wasn’t taken with this one for a while into the book; I like a more mystery/suspense plot than the romance side of things, but I do like romance, and the first third of the book was a lot more about the romance between the two MCs than the mystery. However, after the first third, even the romance part picked up and became a very interesting mystery and romance even if the book was still more romance than mystery. I was fully invested in the end, and I’ve been wavering between a 4 and a 5 star rating. 4 for the long introduction that could have been cut down some, and 5 for the end parts of the book. I will definitely read the next one. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
DNF. I couldn't get into this one because it didn't feel authentic to me. It felt like it was a hodgepodge of many popular books already out there instead of being its own story. In my opinion, the vibes were very chaotic and messy.
The world building based around New Orleans is very fitting, and sets itself up as a beautiful backdrop for this story. There is a little bit of self destruction and anxiety triggers, but the character development is wonderful; Ember and Killian are very engaging and I love the dual POV.
This book has magic and murder mystery. As well as enemies to lovers, fated mates, and the perfect amount of very hot spice. It also weaves forced proximity and the ever loving “touch her and die” trope.
I can’t wait to read the next book!
This is the second novel by an indie author that will rank in my top reads of this year.
Bewitched Shadows is an amazing combination of mystery, romance and fantasy. The best being the enemies to lovers as fated mates.
Seeing all types of supernatural creatures being involved in this book was great to see, not a lot of other fantasy/supernatural books will touch on other creatures such as the nymphs.
The element of the mystery and murder was a highlight in the book but was not a big focus.
I am excited to see if there will be a book following this one, showing us Jade’s new role with a certain vampire prince.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for proving me with an ARC.
