Stacey Abrams delivers another gripping legal thriller], showcasing her writing prowess and political astuteness. The story, filled with power grid issues, political intrigue, and crypto topics, captures the reader's attention from start to finish. Avery Keene, a strong and credible protagonist, navigates a world of powerful allies and enemies, making for an engaging read. The pacing is on point, and the audio version enhances the experience. While the plot may not be entirely original, the story remains captivating throughout.
It is worth noting that reading the previous book in the series is recommended for a better understanding of the characters and their backstories. Without that background, some elements may seem incredulous. The abundance of details and numerous characters, however, can make the plot feel overwhelming and hinder the pacing. This may make it challenging to stay fully engaged with the story.
Overall, Stacey Abrams showcases her writing skills once again, delivering a thrilling legal drama that will satisfy fans of the genre. While it may not hold everyone's attention consistently, it offers a deeper and more complex plot than typical legal thrillers. Fans of political and legal dramas will likely find enjoyment in this series.
Stacey Abrams picks up where she left off in WHILE JUSTICE SLEEPS.
ROGUE JUSTICE is a tautly plotted drama with a themes plucked from modern day national security threats.
If you loved Avery Keene before you'll lover her now.
So grateful to have been able to read an eARC of Stacey Abrams new book! While it wasn't my favorite thriller in the world, it was definitely entertaining.
This book was a bit confusing for me at the beginning and is definitely better read after reading the first featuring this character.. with everything go on in our political and judicial systems these days this book is a timely qnd engaging read for sure!
Thank you to Net Galley and the Publisher for this Advanced Readers Copy of Rogue Justice by Stacey Abrams
Overall a solid story & excellent read. I went into this one without realizing it was a sequel but it started out with a bit of a recap so I was able to catch up & didn't feel like I missed anything I was totally able to follow along. A great story excellent writing clearly it was well researched with all the intricacies & details. Political thrillers typicality aren't my thing but for Stacey Abrams I definitely made the exception and I'm quite glad I gave this one a read.
This book was an easy and fast paced read! It had all the elements I needed in a legal thriller: Action, corrupt politicians, an assassin, and justice being served through some smart civilians.
While, I think I liked the first one better, the second book was still a good follow up and I can’t wait to see more of this bad ass MC, Avery Keene and all of the side characters (:
This would also be an excellent Netflix or CBS series.
So i am usually not a serial reader but since the first one was so interesting I thought I’ll give this one a try. Unfortunately for me O could not get with Rogue Justice. It started off very slow and vague . Then it went into a whirlwind of characters and mixed plots.
I didn't realize this was a sequel to While Justice Sleeps, which I hadn't read yet. So I went back to read it before this one and wow - both books are spectacular. I have always been a fan of political thrillers and have read many over the years. Stacey Abrams and the characters (love Avery Keene!) introduced in this series are now among my favorite. While I don't know how Abrams has managed to write such powerful books while also saving politics in Georgia, I hope she continues to do both.
Nice followup to WHIlE JUSTICE SLEEPS. I couldn't get into Abrams Montgomery novels, but I'm liking this new vein.
This is a sequel with a definitive continuation of While Justice Sleeps Avery Keene’s first story. This could be read as a stand-alone, however, I would recommend reading the first book. Avery begins to investigate a threat brought to here by a law clerk. Avery is very skeptical until the law clerk is murdered right before her eyes. Avery uncovers another threat to US security and thus begins another captivating mystery. This story kept my interest and Stacey Abrams knows the political landscape. If you enjoy political thrillers and mysteries, then this is a story for you. Recommend.
ROGUE JUSTICE by Stacey Abrams (While Justice Sleeps) is another adventuresome mystery featuring Supreme Court clerk Avery Keene. While still dealing with fallout from her last confrontation with the federal government, Avery is approached with worrisome files and a doctored video indicating that a recently deceased federal judge may have been compromised. Before Avery can learn much more, she witnesses horrific murder and finds her own life and those of her friends to be threatened. Abrams imagines a plausible attack on the federal government, infrastructure, and the financial sector. That is all too real given recent news articles like: "US government agencies hit in global cyberattack" per CNN and "Food Producers Band Together in Face of Cyber Threats" from the Wall Street Journal. Avery and her "team," including FBI Agent Robert Lee, not only have to discover the source of the plot, they also struggle to avoid politics and to convince bureaucrats of its seriousness, once again mirroring the real world. The pacing seems a bit slow in places and there are some convenient coincidences, but ROGUE JUSTICE is still an entertaining puzzle, appearing on a recent New York Times list, "Murder, They Wrote," of newly published and recommended summer crime novels.
Absolutely stunning work. The characters jump off the pages, the situations are all too believable and the pace never lets up. The second in the Avery Keene legal thrillers continues to cover politics with a gloves off, clear eyed assessment of America's current unhealthy situation. No glossing over the fact that party is for party, not for the country as a whole. Sleuthing activities involving electric grids, crypto currency , money transfers, assassins, courts and leading actors of the country. Not being a geek, much of the technology was beyond me but it certainly sounded authentic. Hope there are more stories featuring there characters to come.
I received this book from Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it. Thanks to the author and publishers for making it available.
Avery Keene is BACK....This is a fascinating book, aligning real life situations and the dangers facing us and our nation today.
Sent on a business trip by the Chief Justice, Avery is approached by a man who pushes files, and a phone into her arms, telling her that his boss, a Federal judge committed suicide, and there is more to her death. Shocked, Avery attempts to follow the man, but the man is killed before she can get to him.
Going through his phone she finds files that shocks her, and being Avery who we have come to know from "While Justice Sleeps" she must find out what kind of danger the country is in before anything happens. Who will believe her?
ON several occasions I struggled follow the details of this read, the actions never failed and in the end the well I won't say that you'll have to read it.
In exchange for my thoughtful and honest review I received a galley copy.
I don't want this to be "ripped from the headlines" but definite "ripped from the headlines" vibes. Good follow up to the first book and will be interested to see if this series continues. Can definitely see a TV adaptation too. Good summer read.
I did not read the first book in this series, but found the introductory chapters to ROGUE JUSTICE sufficient enough to catch up on all the necessary background. The story is compelling, the political intrigue keeps you on the edge of your seat, but DANG the cast of characters in this book is massive. Some characters were introduced without materially clear reasons why and were rarely used again after their introduction, yet the mental load of remembering them *just in case* ensued. In short, a great story but too large of a cast to be fully successful. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free advance copy.
Avery Keene is dealing with the backlash from her involvement with the President's impeachment when another issue lands in her lap, this time focused on blackmail that hints at a larger conspiracy. While Avery is piecing together her life and attempting to get back on track, she also can't let this new case go without learning more and getting to the bottom of it. Avery's eidetic memory and ability to piece together seemingly disparate information leads her to believe that there is going to be an attack on the nation's power system that could lead to catastrophic failure. Avery enlists the help of other agencies to do their best to thwart the attack and determine the attacker's motives, all while trying to protect herself, her family, and her friends. Overall, a solid legal thriller and good addition to the series. Though it does get bogged down by the technical details at times, it is very thorough and provides a lot of background information on how the US legal system works.
In ROGUE JUSTICE, by Stacey Abrams, Supreme Court clerk Avery Keene is approached by Preston Davies who worked for a federal judge that recently died. Davies believes there is a conspiracy around the judge's death and believes that Keene, coming off a very public revealing of an international conspiracy that involved the sitting President, is the right person to help Davies discover the truth. Keene has to navigate through bureaucratic and political obstacles, as well as the aftermath of her previous work, and discover the truth which turns out to be so much bigger and more complicated than Davies and Keene herself thought it could be.
This is the second book with Avery Keene and Abrams does a good job of filling in the reader with the necessary information from the first book without deviating from this story, also without revealing the entire plot of the first book in case the reader wants to go back and read the first book. Avery Keene is a unique protagonist because more than searching for justice, she is driven by solving the puzzle. Avery thrives on solving the mystery and while that solution will reveal the conspiracy, her compulsion to solve outweighs her drive for justice. Abrams has created a complex novel with many political and emotional layers to it, but delivers the story in a way that is easily understandable. As the suspense builds and the curtain is pulled back on the epic destruction that could happen, I found myself wanting to read faster and faster to discover what will happen nextand the ending of the book is both rewarding and pleasant tease for what could be the next book involving Avery Keene.
Abrams has singular voice, but the novel is a reminder of the interesting and exciting legal thrillers that have been popular over the last twenty-five years or so. In this time where everyone seems to more interested in politics than ever before, ROGUE JUSTICE is a wonderfully entertaining escape while remaining relevant.
Thank you to Doubleday Books, Stacey Abrams, and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I’ll keep this one short and sweet. I absolutely loved Rules of Engagement by Stacey Abrams and when I realized there would be a sequel I kept my eyes peeled for it to pop up on NetGalley! Even better was when Doubleday Books and PRH Audio granted my access to this title.
Rogue Justice had a bit of a frenetic style to it that kept me off kilter the entire way through. Avery Keene is back at it. She’s in the thick of a political scandal and a new national crisis is imminent. So of course Avery has to figure out what’s going on.
I was excited to see so many characters return in Abrams’ sequel. I found the end to be quite satisfying and I am curious if there will be more Avery to come!
Did I love it? Not as much as Rules of Engagement, but I did like it.
This legal thriller was quite a read. Avery Keene is back and ready to do more investigating. This was a book about terrorism, espionage, and government. It was very technical, which made it difficult to follow. I did find myself skimming some of the more intricate sections.
The ending was really good. I'm always happy when a book gives you closure in a mystery. Finding out the who, why, and how it all connects was very interesting. I'm not sure I would read a book like this again. I like my stories a little less complicated and more relatable.
Thank you to netgalley & Doubleday Books for my ARC.
