Such a good read - I really enjoyed this book. I'm so glad that I got the chance to read it early and will definitely be recommending it to multiple people who enjoy these types of novels. I enjoyed the characters and especially enjoyed the writing by this author. I'm excited to see what the author comes out with next as I'll definitely be reading it! Thank you to the publisher for my early copy of this book!
When Harry, the detective who has left Oslo and is up to his chin in alcohol, meets Lucille things pick up for him. Pulling him from his morose disposition she needs his aid to protect her from a drug cartel.
Meanwhile a mystery occurs in Oslo and a suspect wants to hire Harry to prove he is innocent. If he helps he can get enough money to get Lucille back when she is kidnapped.
Murder, mayhem and Nesbo's illuminate writing make this a must read.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for my arc ebook. I really found this 13th Harry Hole who-done-it mystery very good but too gory and confusing too often, therefore only 4 instead of 5 stars. So many twists and turns,it was hard to guess who the murderer was till close to the very end. The method of death by killer was gruesome and too explicitly described which I could have done with a little less of. At the beginning,I felt this would be the end of the H.H. novels due to the self destructiveness and his depression but lo and behold,I was thankfully wrong. I highly recommend this book and if parts are too hard for you to read, read quickly or just skim,ha,ha.
“The Thirteenth Tale” by Jo Nesbo is an enthralling and gripping thriller that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. The novel is the thirteenth in the New York Times best-selling series featuring the brilliant yet rogue police investigator Harry Hole, who is back again, this time in Los Angeles.
Harry has left Oslo to drink himself to death, but he finds a new purpose when he helps an older film actress, Lucille, escape from the clutches of a drug cartel. In Oslo, two girls have been murdered, and one of the suspects is a well-known real estate magnate. Katrine Bratt wants to collaborate with Harry, but the chiefs of police are against the idea. Meanwhile, the real estate magnate wants to hire Harry to clear his name from the case.
Harry declines the offer, but when the drug cartel takes Lucille hostage, Harry is forced to put together a team of unlikely allies to help him solve the case. With a deadline of just ten days, and a blood moon forecast over Oslo, the clock is ticking, and the team must work fast if they are to solve the case and save Lucille.
“The Thirteenth Tale” is a thrilling novel that kept me reading long into the night, finding it impossible to put down. Nesbo’s writing is superb, and the plot is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. Harry Hole is an excellent character and part of the reason this series has lasted so long but the writing is still as fresh as the first novel.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Knopf for supplying this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Jo Nesbo has written another great Harry Hole mystery. The killer has used quite a unique way to subdue his victims. Killing Moon has Harry’s old friends and colleagues joining in to catch another serial killer in Oslo. Loved the book , as I do all of his works. It started slow but quickly picked up steam bringing another fast paced thriller for Jo Nesbo.
A friend of mine suggested Jo Nesbo to me a year ago and it has become a stalker-ish obsession ever since...
I was never one for police procedurals or detective like books but that all changed after I was introduced to Jo Nesbo, now I just can't get enough.
When Killing Moon appeared in my e-mail without warning, I knew that I had to clear my plans. There was no way I was letting this one sit on my shelf. I had to read it immediately.
I will state the obvious and tell you this is book number 13 in the Harry Hole series. You do not need to read the 12 previous books but I would recommend it (they are all incredible!!) Killing Moon is easily read as a standalone.
I devoured Killing Moon, last night. If you were a fan of the title as much as I was, wait until you see the content! The writing style is executed with perfection and draws you right in from the beginning. There was never a moment that I was bored or wanted to put the book down. The chapters flowed between each other and the suspense built with each passing page. The amount of time, research, and energy that went into this work of art shows with every lingering word.
The bombshell twist took my breath away and left me thinking long after I had concluded.
This is a book that needs to be on everyones list!
Teaser:
THE HUNT IS ON AND THE POLICE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME. Two young women are missing, their only connection a party they both attended, hosted by a notorious real-estate magnate. When one of the women is found murdered, the police discover an unusual signature left by the killer, giving them reason to suspect he will strike again.
THEY'RE FACING A KILLER UNLIKE ANY OTHER. And exposing him calls for a detective like no other. But the legendary Harry Hole is gone—fired from the force, drinking himself to oblivion in Los Angeles. It seems that nothing can entice him back to Oslo. Until the woman who saved Harry's life is put in grave danger, and he has no choice but to return to the city that haunts him and track down the murderer.
CATCHING HIM WILL PUSH HARRY TO THE LIMIT. He'll need to bring together a misfit team of former operatives to accomplish what he can't do alone: stop an unstoppable killer. But as the evidence mounts, it becomes clear that there is more to this case than meets the eye...
If "Killing Moon" is to be any indication, Jo Nesbo has a knack for creating memorable characters and twisted, vivid villains. Chilling, thrilling, and keeps you guessing until the bitter end. I'm new to the Harry Hole series but am ready to go back and start them at the beginning. Brilliant!
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Killing Moon.
I've been a fan of the Harry Hole series for a long time so I was so excited my request was approved.
I enjoy the author's writing very much; he's great at character development, making you care about each individual, supporting or minor, and his plots are pretty twisty, if not sometimes downright hard to suspend disbelief for.
The writing and characters are so compelling that I'm able to suspend disbelief for easily when it comes to Harry Hole and his friends and colleagues.
You can always count on the author to think of creative, unique, insane serial killers who will come face to face with the (in)famous detective.
We pick up right where we last left Harry; traumatized, grief stricken and burdened with guilt. And drinking himself to death in L.A.
When he's called back to Oslo to spearhead an investigation on behalf of a wealthy Norwegian, Harry assembles his Ocean's 11 crew of loyal (and not so loyal) friends and former colleagues.
Together, Harry and his friends will match wits with a new villain, a disturbed individual bent on wreaking vengeance but will it be too late?
There are plenty of red herrings, minor characters, POVs, but the pace is always moving, it never tires or slows down.
Harry is also not on top of his game; he's a little rusty and makes some false judgements. It takes him longer to piece the puzzle together and he acknowledges that slip up during the novel.
Readers should know there are subjects in the novel that some people might find triggering or uncomfortable; sexual violence, pedophilia, and graphic descriptions of BDSM at a gay club.
The author has crafted a unique serial killer with a talent in a field I have never heard of but was intrigued to learn about.
Harry is the same as always; taciturn, gruff, sad, morose, and still a ladykiller. He's also kind, generous, and fiercely loyal to his friends and family.
I'm so glad Harry Hole is back. I can't wait for the next book!
investigator Harry Hole has been banished. Following the murder of his wife, Harry fled and has lived an intransigent life. We find his drinking too much and contemplating his own death in Los Angeles. The wonderful and incredibly talented Jo Nesbo creates a unique character and story to pull him back in.
A serial killer like no other is terrorizing Oslo. It's gruesome, and the players are frantically trying to locate Harry to assist. If you love your Nordic Noir, macabre and spine tingling thrills then Killing Moon is for you! #JoNesbo
