thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy of deathly desires. this was spicy! for a romance book with lots of spice this is what you need to check out!
Within the expectations of the genre and this type of book: this was such a fun read. Dark, gritty, sexual, just as advertised.
That being said, the darkness can be a lot for some, so if you are not a fan of that, or cannot leave reality at the "door" then perhaps stay away from this book.
Very quick, dirty read! Renae finds herself in front of the Grim Reaper and realizes that he is HOT! They strike up a hot hot hot relationship and the spice is *chef's kiss*!
Fun, short story with a good amount of paranormal smut! Check the trigger warnings!
Would love it if it weren't so insta-love with a bit more development, but if the goal was quick and dirty - it was 100% achieved!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Evernight Publishing for the eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of a series, but reads well as a stand alone. This is cute in an odd way, but very short. This could be triggering (she basically commits suicide). 3 stars
Okay so I honestly wasn’t quite sure what I signed up for when I received this ARC.
Turns out this is a quick and spicy read about 19 year old, Renea and her escapades with the Grim Reaper after she commits suicide.
I am torn on whether I actually enjoyed this or not. It almost feels wrong to have when the plot is essentially just glorifying suicide. But then on the other hand you have some decent spicy scenes with a ripped Angel of Death with chocolate flavored cum. 🤷🏻♀️ Idk. I just don’t know.
Trigger Warnings:
Suicide
Child abuse
Rape (past)
Unaliving
Pedophilia
This book was the one that really got me I was hooked from the very beginning it had deep meaning in it ,the relationship between the two main characters was a bond that no one could have thought would happen and no one can break. it is a sexy erotic book that you do not want to put it down and believe me when I tell you it will make you hot 🔥The writer did a fantastic job 10 out of 10 would recommend
This book was interesting, in the fact that I didn’t dislike it or like it. It was very steamy which I liked and I think it has the bones of being a good book but it was a little rushed and the descriptive words were cringey and repetitive. The concept of this book was good and I think if it was a little longer it would have been better.
3.5 stars for giving me a good laugh ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Renae is a girl fed up with being physically and s*xually abused her whole life, and seeks to take her own life instead on Halloween. After dying, she arrives in limbo with an instant, lustful desire for the Grim Reaper. A super short read— great for when you just want to read some quick, STEAMY smut.
*Trigger Warnings* abound with this one!! This story heavily talks about su*cide and convincing others into su*cide. Other TW’s include: alcohol, child abuse, drowning, p*dophilia, dub con, su*cide ideation, burns, trauma, gagging, and bondage.
So the pacing for this story was rather weird. I know it was a really short story, but it moved so quickly that I could barely keep up with what was happening. You jump straight into the plot with very little backstory, and it’s an insta-love type of connection between the two main characters and they get straight down to business. What I found strange was how Renae had committed su*cide because she was tired of being s*xually and physically abused her whole life, but was real intent on getting her some Shadow Meat as soon as her Grim Reaper showed up. Speaking of…
Some of the words choices for certain “parts” had me giggling. Some of the words include, but are CERTAINLY not limited to are: “shadow meat”, “whisker”, and “pink starfish”. I don’t know if the author chose these on purpose as a joke or not, but really— it made my night. I love when a story is so out there that they make me laugh. And this story was CERTAINLY out there. It’s really not one to take too seriously.
The premise of the story was interesting, and would have been great had it been a fuller length novel. I enjoyed the love interest being the Grim Reaper, and it would have been much greater for me had they fallen in love slower. The way the author described his shadowy form, *ahem* besides just his “shadow meat”, gave such a vivid description of what Grim looked like that I was interested to know more. Too bad the book was too short to go into too much detail about either of the main characters. If the author ever decided to expand upon this story, I would still consider reading it.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for my Honest review. This has not influenced my review in any way.
Longer than book one which I appreciated but still a short read. Storyline is good. Trigger warning should be added because suicide is talked about. Similarities between this book and the first in the series. The end could've been better especially if there are going to be more in the series. The quick to fall in love was cheesy like the first book. Overall the storyline was good.
This novella is a DARK paranormal erotica between the Angel of Death and the recently deceased Renae, who has dealt with some of the worse situations in life. Faedra came in hot with the spice, quickly setting the tone for this short story. Although dark topics are discussed in this 47 paged novella, Faedra breaks it up with comedic moments splattered throughout the story to help lighten the story.
Tropes:
-mates
-monster romance
-paranormal
TW:
-suicide
-death
-mentions of sexual & physical abuse
-murder
-neglect
-bondage
I would recommend this story to anybody looking for a quick read full of kinks, monsters, and spice!
Thank you to NetGalley, BookSiren, and Faedra Rose for the opportunity to read this ARC; all opinions are my own
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this book.
The only thing I liked about this book was the fact it was only 40 pages...
The whole book was just awful. The writing style felt like it was written by a 17 year old who's taken a free creative writing class. The characters were one dimensional and unrealistic. The concept of the story could have potential but it needs so much work.
The author really needs to work on their craft before publishing more novels.
There is a way to write a cohesive novella. I'm not sure this is the best example. This follows a plot structure, but it was very basic.
Plot - 3
I disagree with the creative choice to make his cum chocolate.
Writing and Editing - 2
I was expecting dark, and there is always problematic content in the genre, but this was a pretty nonsensical and bizarre form of problematic.
Character Development - 2
Didn't really happen.
Personal Bias - 1
Not for me.
Final Score - 2
i’m gonna be totally honest when i say i have no idea what i just read. while this book was definitely steamy it’s just a lot to handle 😭 i didn’t really like the pacing at all and i wish we could’ve received a little more context beforehand.
this book was definitely an entertaining, nice, steamy short read! thank you to netgalley and evernight publishing for sending me this arc! all opinions are my own
I had never read anything by this author so I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was quick, steamy and to the point. Even though this is part of a series this can be read as a stand alone book.
I definitely want to mention to really look at the trigger warnings because they are heavily hit on.
I give a 2.5/5 stars to the man in the back flashing us his shadow meat!
What did I just read.. wow. A lot to process through. And it’s not even the content it’s just the structure and pace that’s really giving me whiplash. We just get thrown right into the main plot without a segue so it feels very random. She goes from dead to sucking the grim reaper’s dick in like 1 sentence. Then they’re just in love and decide eternity sounds kewl despite never really just hanging out. She just sees her own dead body and then is all “anyways I guess this is the next logical thing, time to suck dick hehe.” Except the word wasn’t dick it was SHADOW MEAT. SHADOW. MEAT. Straight to jail. If you’re a fan of Siggy Shade, this could be for you though!
I want to give an *explicit trigger warning* that I need y’all to pay close attention to. If you are at all even 10% wanting to unalive yourself, do not read this book. Don’t. It is absolutely seductive and glorifying toward su*cide.
If you have any issues at all with s*xual abuse or s*xual trauma, do not read this book. She nearly always reflects on her prior SAs/r*pes during sex scenes.
Other TW: drugs, alcohol, abuse, burns, gagging against will, pedophilia, parental neglect, convincing others into suicide, poverty, dub con, drowning
Praise for this book: ok so it really wasn’t a wash! If 5 stars is a literary work of art I do think 2.5/5 is fair. This is late night McDonald’s, not a Michelin star chef; if you know that going in, you’ll be fine. It is a quick read ~45-60 mins, so it’s a nice palate cleanser. It is a creative take, I haven’t really read a book like this before! When our hero finally talks he’s very gallant on the streets but a freak in the afterlife sheets. A lot of the spicy scenes had good ingredients in them. We want our heroine to win, girly has been through a lot and this is good for her. This seems like she can grow in this new role. If you can suspend your disbelief, all the better. Definitely emulates a lot of the iconic Siggy Shade.
Constructive feedback for this book: why are we using British vernacular in a trailer park in Washington state? Really distracting. Bruh WTF are these euphemisms??? It ruins the spicy scenes when I’m reading about “shadow meat”, a “hand warmer with… throbbing veins” and a “pulsating pink starfish” (aka her bootyhole) to name a few. I mean did I laugh? Yeah but it didn’t turn me on. I understand there needs to be a degree of levity given the overall material but yikes. Speaking of which, nearly every steamy scene includes her reflecting on her prior r*pes. It is a bucket of ice water. As someone with my own trauma it realllyyy isn’t good to connect with.
Our FMC is frankly unintelligent. She falls in insta love with no prompting other than sex and we also see the “fated mates” trope albeit in an interesting way. HOWEVER when you realize she’s been horrifically abused, is mentally frozen forever as a child, has no concept of love, views sex as transactional, and is clinging to the first being that isn’t outright monstrous… yeah her entire deal and the entire book makes sense. You absolutely have to read it through the lens of “this is a severely abused teen who is mentally and emotionally stunted”.
This plot had potential but unfortunately it was incredibly rushed and stilted. It felt like we had a strict page limit. An ikea budget for a Martha Stewart vision. It could be worked into a much better deal, especiallyyyy shuffling the discussion of trauma AWAY from the spicy moments! Please for the love of all things holy.
Would I recommend this book? I want to say I would for the LOLs and spicy scenes but the constant constant graphic insertions of severe abuse just don’t make it worth it. Mentally this isn’t really a safe book.
It’s exactly what I thought it would be and more. I can see so much potential for this book. Make sure you check the trigger warnings. As it does have some darker themes. The idea and major plot outline is amazing. I enjoyed the spin on the Grim Reaper and the main character.
You don’t get much build up before you the peak and wrap up of the story. It’s starts just as the description says with the main character giving up on the terrible hand she has been dealt and ending her life. She is swept away by the Grim Reaper. And she thinks this may finally be her chance to find a slice of happiness.
While I wish that we got more character development and a more detailed plot line I will say that I really did enjoy this book. It’s dirty and a little weird. And right up my alley.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the chance to read this book for free.
This was a short and quick read. Much like the smexy scenes in it. I was a little disappointed that the scenes weren't fleshed out (heh) a little more but they weren't terrible by far. The FMC definitely felt and acted her age of 19 while Mr. Grimm had me at odd with how old he was supposed to be and how he acted in some parts.
Overall, not a bad story if you need a palette cleanser or something for those 1 hour flights.
Content Warnings include suicide, murder, mentions of past sexual and physical abuse, neglect, and bondage.
Dark, steamy, quick read about a 19 year old and the hot grim reaper. While I didn't quite like the beginning, I couldn't put it down. It was quick, to the point (no slow burn here), and spicy/sweet (specifically rich creamy chocolate). Definitely was not expecting a couple parts but now it cant picture it any other way. If you like dark romance and/or monster spice, this is a good stand alone book.
Wow! Very dark and very steamy! It was a quick read and it gets to the point quickly. I loved it. I will definitely be reading more of her books
A sexy read about death himself taking a soul as his own to please and use for his own desires. If you're a fan of quick reads that get straight to the naughty point, you'll enjoy this! Keep in mind to always read triggers before starting a book as there are things mentioned some might not enjoy.
