Omg so good!! This thriller was perfect for a rainy day to keep you entertained. And let me tell you I couldn't get enough. Totally forgot I was even reading.
I just reviewed The House Beyond the Dunes by Mary Burton. #TheHouseBeyondtheDunes #NetGalley

Well, this is a mindf*ck for sure. It’s a bit of a departure from the author’s normal work, which is 100% fantastic on its own. But this? This one had me guessing several times. And every time I figured one piece out, three more appeared to make me doubt and question and wonder even more.
Lane is the sole survivor of a freak accident. Or was it? Heck, is she the only one? She’s trying to make head or tails of what happened and where she and her new boyfriend went wrong, only to find that there are far more disturbing questions than answers, no matter where she turns next. And as she finds out more, a picture is painted of a desolate area with close friends who couldn’t decide if loyalty was worth the price they have to pay. She also has to figure out if she can leave. If she can accept the truth. Or if she’s destined to be one more statistic.
While there are some things that may seem obvious here, you’ll still be shocked when it all comes together in the end. And maybe you’ll feel some hope for what the future could hold for Lane. I know I did.
Mary Burton takes us on a thrilling adventure to unearth the truth behind a tragedy! Each character has their own truth!
Lane wakes up in a hospital after a near fatal fall and cannot remember the events leading up to the fall. All she knows is Kyle died in the fall and she was injured. She returns to Kyle's cottage to collect her belongings and plans to get out. A rainstorm prevents her from leaving. Enter Reece, a concerned neighbor who claims he heard an argument prior to the accident. There is also a detective on the trail of a missing woman, one whose diary deepens the mystery.
This thriller had twists and turns throughout and the unreliable narrator with lapses in memory added to the suspense. There were some things I predicted, some I was suspicious of, and some that I had no idea were coming. This was a page turner and I couldn't wait to find out the ending.
Thanks to Netgalley and Montlake for a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Lane and Kyle head out for a romantic weekend at the beach. They have only been dating three weeks, and Lane is excited to figure out her feelings for Kyle. An accident happens and Kyle is dead. Lane wants to figure out if it was an accident or if there is something more sinister going on. I enjoy Mary Burton’s books because they remind me of Mary Higgins Clark. A little bit of romance and suspense tied up together. A quick read.
Lane McCord wakes up in the hospital, only to discover her new boyfriend died in an unfortunate accident. She cannot remember key points leading to the disastrous fall. Lane hopes to reclaim her missing memories by returning to the cottage. However, she starts receiving mysterious texts containing a missing woman’s diary. Lane realizes there is more to her boyfriend Kyle than he let on. Will Lane discover what exactly happened at the cottage? And who can she trust? The detective who keeps hounding her? Or the handsome carpenter next door?
It took me a while to connect with Lane. Lane spent most of her crummy childhood in foster care. It has taught her not to attract unnecessary attention or scrutiny. What I admire the most about Lane is how she helps teenage girls who were like her. They are the reason she works so hard to earn her PHd.
THE HOUSE BEYOND THE DUNES is a standalone thriller by Mary Burton. I have read a title or two from this author before, so I knew Burton focuses more on the suspense element than romance.
I would say this story had zero romance. I honestly did not know who the heroine would end up with until the end. There were hints that something could develop, but it was not focused on. Personally? I did not mind. The plot gripped me that I forgot I found this title in the romance section of Netgalley.
Oh my! The House Beyond the Dunes by Mary Burton is a great story. I thought I had it all figured out, boy was I wrong! It was an easy and quick read. Not too much romance. Definitely a thriller/mystery.
A real thrilling mystery which had me confused for sometime.
What happened at the cottage and who can she trust?
A real edge of your seat read.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my early copy.
Exciting and well worth reading.
Giving that I love the Outer Banks, I was thrilled to receive this book to review. A thriller that has surprising twist and turns kept me reading all day.. Our main character, Lane, wakes up in a hospital in Norfolk Virginia with no recollection of how she got there. She is shocked to learn that the man she had been dating for several weeks had been found dead beside her after a tragic fall at his beach house. Secrets long hidden will keep the reader intrigued to the final last pages. A great beach read (especial those who go to the Outer Banks).
Figured out some of it and was surprised by some of it. We'll written characters, even the unlikable ones. Good flow to ghe story. Trigger warnings, abuse.
First off.. why was this in the romance category? There was barely any in it, so that’s a disappointment. Regardless, this book was a twisty good time and I definitely would recommend it.
Lane meeting Kyle was it only a matter of days, now going to his cottage in Northern Carolina for a romantic week end. The memories are dull, a fall, they say he is dead. Collecting her personal items, when a rain storm hits and she is stranded there. A nightmare then unfolds, her faith in people was shaken, for she thought she knew Kyle. Now two people are involved, one is concerned and the other wants answers. Did she want answers or who to trust, alone with a storm Given ARC by Montlake and Net Galley for my voluntary review and honest opinion.
The House Beyond the Dunes
by Mary Burton
This was one brilliantly written book! A tragic accident or something more sinister? I was glued to the book, from front to back. There are secrets people are keeping about that night, All Lane does remember is laying at the bottom of the stairs with Kyle. But, things are feeling so off. There are two other missing women a police officer is asking about. I almost, truly feel off my seat when I got to the end of the book. I NEVER, saw the ending coming.
A tragic accident or something more sinister? A woman's buried memories put her life at risk in The House Beyond the Dunes by Mary Burton. This story is from different points of view and alternating timelines, which seemed to work okay for me. I read pretty fast and had nothing to do over the weekend but read, and I was able to get through this book fairly quickly.
Lane McCord wakes up in a hospital, having survived a near-fatal fall at a North Carolina beach cottage. Her boyfriend, Kyle, wasn't so lucky. A senseless tragedy on their first romantic getaway. All Lane remembers is lying at the bottom of the stairs in Kyle's pooling blood. Confused and grieving, Lane plans to return to the cottage, collect her personal belongings, and get out. Until a winter rainstorm leaves her stranded and vulnerable, but not alone. A concerned neighbor, who claims he heard a violent argument before the accident, has come out of the storm. So has a suspicious detective on the trail of a missing woman.
What really happened at the cottage on the beach? And when the answers come, who can Lane trust to get out of this waking nightmare alive?
The story had a good plot with well-developed characters who had multiple layers. The author can weave a good story and keep a reader turning the pages. The twist at the end is done quite well. The story and mystery were engaging. A solid 4 out of 5 stars for me.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Lane is excited about going to Kyle,s place and taking their relationship to the next step. When she wakes up in a hospital and learns about Kyle's death, she has no memory of what happened. When she learns that other women have disappeared, she will need everything in her arsenal to figure it out. This was a page turner which was a joy to read.
Having traveled to the Outer Banks last summer, I was intrigued by the cover and setting of this thriller. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC for the purpose of this review.
The book started out really interesting for me so I kept at it and desired to know more about what would happen to the main character and the man she recently began seeing. After about five or so chapters in, I wasn't as taken with the story for some reason. I think the author is talented and crafted a good thriller but my favorite parts were descriptions of the area. Three stars.

A tragic accident or something more sinister? A woman’s buried memories put her life at risk in a novel of shattering psychological suspense by New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton. Lane McCord wakes up in a hospital having survived a near-fatal fall at a North Carolina beach cottage. Her boyfriend, Kyle, wasn’t so lucky. A senseless tragedy on their first romantic getaway. All Lane remembers is lying at the bottom of the stairs in Kyle’s pooling blood.
Confused and grieving, Lane plans to return to the cottage, collect her personal belongings, and get out. Until a winter rainstorm leaves her stranded and vulnerable, but not alone. A concerned neighbour, who claims he heard a violent argument before the accident, has come out of the storm. So has a suspicious detective on the trail of a missing woman, whose diary deepens the mystery—and raises more questions that fill Lane with dread. How well did she know Kyle? How well does she know herself? What really happened at the cottage on the beach? And when the answers come, who can Lane trust to get out of this waking nightmare alive?
A great beach thriller that is coming out when school is back in session: hide this book and read it in class if you have to. Yes, I said it. Great characters, a gripping plot line and an author whose work I continue to love has added another gem to her oeuvre. The book was hard to put down once I started and it stuck with me in thoughts that I want to go to NC to visit friends, and family, stay at a beach house and solve a murder all at the same time!
HIGHLY recommended: 5/5 stars.

I'm always a fan of Burton's mysteries. Great characters and the who done it's are great even if I can always guess the bad guy. This one is a unique setup between a missing woman's journal and Lane after an accidental fall down the stairs kills Lane's boyfriend and she can't recall the preceding minutes. But this comes with a twist I didn't see coming which pleased me immensely! Highly recommend this one!
I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader's copy of The House Beyond the Dunes by Mary Burton from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Full disclosure: I am a big fan of Mary Burton so I was pretty sure I’d enjoy this book before I began reading.
Happily, that optimism was spot on and I spent a lovely, rainy evening taking in a suspenseful, thrilling story page by page. The novel was thoroughly engaging. It moved swiftly, was entertaining, and some of the plot twists really did catch me off guard (in the best way). I was almost disappointed when I reached the final chapter, because there was no more to read, but even the ending was well done.
I can’t wait for the next book by Mary Burton!
I liked the cover of this book immediately and it stuck out among many others. I really thought 98% of the book was great. It was interesting, easy to read and the characters were great, I especially enjoyed the character Stevie Palmer. However..I feel like the twist has been done…ALOT. I know it's hard now to surprise readers with so many mystery writers out there but the twist just seemed like a bit of a throw away for me.
