If you live historical fiction mixed with suspense and mystery plus true crime you will love this book.
Set in the 1920s, this books was based on the murder of Dot King, a dancer in NYC. There are so many twists and turns and dark things uncovered. Julia Harper, a reporter, is determined to find justice for Dot no matter how dangerous it becomes for her.
Read this book! Guaranteed to be something for everyone in
Perfectly plotted and intricately researched, Broadway Butterfly immediately had me hooked. This book is rife with details that made me feel as though I were there when all this was happening. DiVello perfectly weaves together historical fiction and a whodunit and by the end, I was completely satisfied. This may be DiVello’s first book but I’m really hoping it’s not the last.
Thank you Netgalley and Thomas Mercer for this ARC. I unfortunately found myself not wanting to finish this book :(. I loved the premise , but it seemed to all over the place to me.
A great historical fiction read based on a the true murder of Dot King, a scandalous flapper from the 1920's. Told through the viewpoints of the detective trying to weed truth from rumor and a female news reporter who can often gain more information than a man would in knowing which questions to ask and of who. I loved the deep historical detail the author used to lay the background of this story and city during the roaring twenties as well as the deep dive into the murder and keeping as much of the truth within the story. During a time when often flappers were often disregarded when it came to crime, this novel really has a lot of twists and potential suspects and to this day it is unsolved. Weaving everything from class, to corruption, to race and gender into this novel the author really brings to life this murder and those who did everything they could at the time to try and find the true culprit and motivation behind this brutal crime, as well as bringing in various backgrounded characters to round out the story. Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the free ebook. This is a read for the crime fiction fans! I look forward to more novels by this author. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
A true crime, historical murder mystery set in New York City in the 1920’s…. Sign me up!
I do love a New aYork setting, and the 1920’s is such a fascinating time in history. Sara DiVello has done so much research into this case and it shows. There is so much detail and you will be transported back in time with the writing. It is a long book, with many characters, but at no time was I confused. The characters were so real and ai was fully invested in this story all the way.
When flapper and model, Dot King is found dead in her New York apartment, there is no shortage of possible suspects. A large bottle of chloroform is next to the body, and the room has been ransacked. Ella Bradford is Dots maid, and she finds the body.
We hear the story and investigation through the eyes of Ella, the police detective John Coughlin and Daily News crime reporter Julia Harpman. As you would expect from this period of time, there is no shortage of corruption, politics, sugar daddies, race issues, gender inequality, class and city underbelly characters.
I loved Julia, the crime reporter. She is a woman in a man’s world, fighting to be taken seriously She will not let go of this case, even when everyone else does. Dot deserves justice, and she puts herself in danger asking tough questions. She is a woman ahead of her time.
Thanks so much to Sara for sending me an advanced copy of her book, and Thriller Book Promotions for putting this on my radar to begin with. Publishes on August 1st.

I'm not sure that I've ever read a fictional book set in the 1920s, but Sara transported me to another world! BROADWAY BUTTERFLY is the result of years of painstaking research into the unsolved case of Dot King, an infamous flapper residing in New York City.
I was awestruck with how the author handled gender, class, race, and the obvious division of justice in this book. I especially enjoyed the colorful cast of characters and how easily I found myself in the story as a bystander.
Many thanks to the author, whom I count as a dear friend, and Thriller Book Lovers Promotions for this early read. BROADWAY BUTTERFLY will publish August 22, 2023.
The novel is set in the 1920s in NYC. The story is based on a crime story with its main character as a woman journalist writing for the crime beat - a rare occurrence at that time. The writing is fast-paced and kept my interest throughout. I enjoyed reading the thoughts of the different women in the scenario: the journalist, the witness, the wronged wife. A read I would recommend.
Set in 1920s New York, BROADWAY BUTTERFLY is based on the real-life murder of Dot King, a beautiful young woman living on a knife’s edge, where the outwardly glamorous, glitzy world of flappers intersected with the city's seamy underbelly of corrupt, morally bankrupt, dangerous men.
DiVello’s meticulous research brings the investigation of Dot’s murder to life through multiple perspectives - the detective investigating Dot’s murder, a young female crime reporter, Dot’s Black housekeeper, and a wealthy, high-society lady.
Myriad twists and turns and unanswered questions will leave readers wondering what exactly happened to Dot and outraged by the machinations required for her murderer(s?) to get away with it.
I enjoyed reading this book - it was clearly a labor of love and DiVello did a fantastic job imagining how scenes would have played out. I do wish it had been a tad shorter, but the story is so complicated I’m not sure how that would be accomplished without leaving something important out.
This is a must-read for fans of historical true crime - it was like a fictionalized version of Kate Winkler Dawson’s work.
I was super excited for the opportunity to read this book! I heard great reviews and it lived up to my expectations! This was a fantastic read!
This book focuses on the murder of Broadway Butterfly, Dot King. Dot King was a flapper who was murdered in 1923. The story of what happened to Dor King has not been solved to this day, but this book gives additional details about the life and death of Dot King, her mysterious boyfriends Guimares and Mr. Mitchell, the police officers and reporters reporting on the case and more. I really enjoyed reading through the tangled web of the life of Dot King and Julia Harpman.
Julia Harpman was one of the reporters who tried so hard not to give up on finding Dot’s killer! Julia was a news reporter at a time when women weren’t news reporters. She had talent and bravery.
Highly recommend if you like true crime and mysteries. Just know it is unsolved.
Broadway Butterfly was a book marketed as a thriller but I don’t know if I’d use that term honestly. I’d say this is more historical fiction based on a true story and done incredibly well at that. The writing was superb, you can tell DiVello knows her craft. It was also researched and researched some more so you know you’re getting a fairly accurate account of details pertaining to the unsolved case of Dot King, infamous flapper of 1920’s NYC. I loved the multiple POV (the detective on the case and a scrappy female reporter, along with the wronged wife of one of the suspects), each equally captivating. I thought it might have been able to be tightened up as it was a longish book but other than that, I really enjoyed my tromp through the roaring 20's while trying to catch a killer.
Sara DiVello's debut novel is fantastic. I could use a lot of adjectives, but that's simply what it is. If you've never heard of the Broadway Butterfly, Sara's meticulously researched novel is the perfect time to introduce yourself to Dot King, the mysterious Mr. Mitchell, and the mystery surrounding the murder of Dashing Dot in the early hours of March 16, 1923. Part thriller, part historical fiction, but all amazingly constructed, The Broadway Butterfly is a must read!
Glitz, glamour, and money don't always bring justice

MY REVIEW::
If you love unsolved true crime this book is right up your alley.
Cue the fancy dream music , BAM, you're transported back to the the roarin' 1920's.
This book takes you on a trip through murder, bribery, investigation, and CHLOROFORM.
I'm not much for historical books but i LOVE true crime, and everyone knows i love a great thriller! It follows the crime & investigation from the moment it happens through the lives of all those involved. This book intrigued me because it's still unsolved, all these years later. The story is super entrancing and becomes a spiderweb of suspects the more the clues are uncovered.
I definitely recommend you check this book out && the on going podcast by the author herself : @thrillermaven

The book is brilliant. Set in the backdrop of 1920 New York. A woman was killed yet there were too many suspects and endless secrets. This is a twisted murder mystery and suspenseful enough to hook the readers. This is based on a true crime that gripped people in 1923 so I am not going to say much. But I loved the investigation, characters and the mystery that kept me at edge of my seat. Involvement of powerful people and the glimpse of wealthy families. The book has so many secrets and inevitable truths. It’s a must read.
Thank you Netgalley, Author and publisher for giving me opportunity to read this book.
The overall plot is intriguing, but the actual writing style and format is juvenile.
Thank you for the digital review copy.
