*received for free from netgalley for honest review* fun and educational read! would buy for a middle aged kid
This book has solid curiosity appeal for young readers. It's the same drive that leads us to read the Guinness Book of World Records or Ripley's Believe it or Not. This book has a similar tone, focusing more on factoids than an in depth exploration of any one topic. Reading it reminded me of books like It's Disgusting and We Ate It. The reader won't learn much from this volume, necessarily, but it might encourage further reading on a topic.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This was an interesting fact book for younger readers. I listened to it as an audiobook, and the format does not suit it as well as print.
I had high expectations for this book, it had been recommended. But it did not hold my attention so that made me sure it would not hold my students. It was not what I had expected.
The narrator was good, just the content was disappointing.
Thank you, Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this audiobook.
This book was a lot of fun. While I got the audiobook as an ARC, I also read the print version. Although the audio was well produced and performed, I recommended the book simply for the beautiful illustrations. My favorite competitions were the Pumpkin Regatta, Bee Bearding, and Skyscraper Running. This would be a fun book for grades 3 and up. It would even make for a good nightly read aloud to read a section each evening.
I couldn't get into this as an audiobook, sadly, but when I got my hands on a physical copy I really enjoyed it! I love all the history and interesting competitions that this book included. My students will LOVE this and will definitely want to try some of them (hopefully not the dung spitting one!). I plan to purchase a physical copy of this for our library.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the audioARC of this!
My kids and I really enjoyed listening to this! Some of the competitions sounded gross or scary, but a lot were very funny. We’d never heard of most of them so it was very informative. This would be fun as a bedtime readaloud since each item gets its own short entry.
I loved reading about the interesting and unique completions. It provides lots of great discussions.
My 8 year old who loves learning all sorts of random facts really enjoyed listening to this. He'd prefer, however, to have read it as a hard copy to refer back to. If it's something you could see yourself only wanting to read once, the audio version is great!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio, Macmillan Young Listeners and NetGalley for this ALC
My six year old daughter and I listened to this together and both found the narration wonderful and all the information so fascinating! Definitely recommend this for any young listeners who love to learn!
Thank you Macmillan Audio, Macmillan Young Listeners and Netgalley for the alc in exchange for an honest review!
