"Queer Little Nightmares" is a unique collection gross and creepy stories and poems. Anthology and horror readers will enjoy this group of tales.
I originally picked up this book to participate in the trans rights readathon, and I am SO GLAD I chose this book.
As it happens with an anthology, not all stories were for me. However, I enjoyed almost all of them (especially the short stories more than the poetry), and found that every single story was gritty, gruesome, horrifying, or otherwise intriguing. This is definitely worth the read!
A varied collection of poetry and short stories from across queer culture, some sweet, some gruesome, and everything in between.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ALC! I waited to start this book to read it as part of the #TransRightsReadathon!
A few of the stories border on horror, a bit more than is my general taste, but overall, I very much enjoyed this collection of monstrous tales from the queer community! I'd love if a few of these stories were flushed out into full novels! All in all, I definitely recommend this collection of tales! But reader beware of "And The Moon Spun" if you're not in the mood for a gruesome tale.
Received a free copy from Netgalley for an honest review.
I genuinely couldn't put it down. I'm a sucker for Anthology collection and thoroughly enjoyed every story, my favourite being "And the Moon Spun".
My only complaint is I'm not a lover of poetry. I'm definitely too emotionally dumb to understand someone's collection and marshalling of thought-provoking words and the arrangement of those words - that being said I still read every line.
I enjoyed this audio of shorts.
Some were cute, some were weird and some were down right gross (And The Moon Spun).
My favourite stories were The Call & The Vetala's Song.
Much love to NetGalley & ECW Press Audio for my DRC.
This is an amazing anthology of queer horror. I loved the variety of stories and poems and the emotional range that was portrayed throughout. I highly recommend the audiobook because the narrator did a fantastic job with it. Rarely do I find myself captivated by each story in a collection, but this one did that for me. I'm looking forward to purchasing the physical copy as soon as possible!
Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC.
I've been interested in this book ever since I saw BooksandLala talking about it in her Halloween vlog. I'm so glad I decided to read this.
Overall, I enjoyed the short stories more than the poetry but there were a few that I really liked: On the Origin of Trans Femmes, Poem Made from Pennywise, and Floral Arrangement I.
Some of my favorites among the stories featured in this anthology (top stories have asterisk) : Wooly Bully, The Vetala's Song*, Nature's Mistake, #WWMD, And the Moon Spun Round Like a Top*, Strange Case, In Our Own Image, The Call*.
The topics on the collection cover a wide variety of topics (Pennywise, sea monsters, gods, futuristic tech, obsession, menstruation, etc).
I listened to the audiobook and I would highly recommend it. The narrator does an excellent job. She changes her voice slightly to fit the story/poem.
Thank you to NetGalley and ECW Press Audio for providing me with a copy of the audiobook in exchange for a review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook collection! The narrator did an amazing job giving the emotion and tone for the different short stories and poems. I thought the collection did a wonderful job compiling different stories to pay homage to horror classics. I enjoyed the mix of campy stories and stories filled with tension not knowing what will happen next. I also have now found several authors that I will be following! There are several short stories that will definitely be staying with/haunting me.
There were a couple of short stories that included a lot of current pop culture references that took me out of the story a bit. However, if another collection of Queer Little Nightmares were to come out, I would absolutely pick it up.
Than you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this!
This was so good! I loved each and every story. I loved that it exposed me to more writers and definitely left me wanted to read more from each of them!
Overall I enjoyed this one! I thought it was a nice mix of stories and poems. Some were much more enjoyable than others and some were pretty disturbing.
I thought the narrator did a good job, but it would have been fun to have a variety of narrators to separate the stories from one another.
I listened to this all day while I worked and I adored it. Audiobooks are usually not scary for me, but I did enjoy the overall collection in general. Some stories were very short, some were pretty long. My favorite story was Creation of Eve—a short blurb on how females are expected to act obedient and hand over the reins to any “Adam” that wants them to. The style and tone reminded me of the “Cool Girl” monologue in Gone Girl, which for me is a major plus.
Godzilla and Poem from Pennywise also packed a punch, mostly because they were shorter and a lot unraveled in the time it was told.
Lesbian vampires for the win.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this!
Thanks to NetGalley and ECW Press Audio for the advanced audiobook.
This is a cool collection of queer monster stories and poems. Some of which take inspiration from well known myths and horror characters and others which are new in concept.
I enjoyed listening to these stories and going on the various journeys the authors take you on.
I would recommend this book to those who love horror but also romance; as a lot of the stories are romantic!
The reader was also very good, considering the amount of stories included; the reader was able to voice the new characters as their own voices rather than a continual read through which was appreciated.
I was able to listen to this book thanks to NetGalley and ECW Press Audio. I love the idea of this anthology collection. I enjoyed the monsters and mythical creatures as well as the narrator. I did feel as though some stories fell a little flat for me so I didn’t enjoy some stories as much as others. Overall it was an enjoyable read/listen.
ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the narrator or this book but it was sometimes hard with this collection to figure out if it was supposed to be from a male or female point of view since the narrator is female and most stories weren’t super specific. The collection itself is all pretty creepy and interesting and I really enjoyed most of them! If you like queer stories and horror in general, you should check this book out!
This was… enjoyable?
Some of the stories were really gross, some were creepy and some were very thought provoking. Some (And The Moon Spun) unlocked a new fear.
Thanks to NetGalley and ECW Press for an Advanced Listening Copy.
In the summary of this book they lead you to believe the stories are intense and about horror. Let me just dispel you of that myth upfront no don’t get me wrong some of these stories were very good like that Vetala’s Song and you are not invited were two very good stories that I would put under horror put some made only mention of horror related things such as fangs, chupacabra, ET see some of the poetry was really good but some of that I just didn’t get but that’s not saying much since I’m not really into poetry but for the most part I would definitely recommend this and kindle book or epic version but asked for the audiobook the girl reading it sounded like she was the next homecoming queen and not the voice of a horror story and although she sounded sweet and seemed like she may be a nice person her voice just gave both American teen vibes and not something you would relate to horror. I hate to give a negative review but wanted to be honest. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
This one was quite unique. I love queer books. I love monster books. Yet this one didn't quite hit the mark for me. I am so bummed I didn't feel a connection because it was a recipe for a perfect book for me!
My favorite story was called Glamour Me and my least faves were Nature's Mistake and And The Moon Spun.....
i wanted to love this book, but i only loved a couple of the stories. i liked the idea behind it. the writing style was fine. i just didn't mesh with the book as a whole. I would recommend it to people to try though. short stories/poem/etc are so subjective. we do need more queer collections so thank you.
What a weird book. I definitely was entertained listening to this. Some of the stories were good, some WTF, and some just fine. Also, that cover is awesome.
The audio format was fine, but not like amazing enough that I would recommend it any more than other formats, I think any would be fine.
I was drawn in by the description, title, and cover, but I'm DNFing this one, at least the audio version. I found it hard to listen to the narrator - while she has a nice voice, I found her cadence, accents, and pacing to be a bit too distracting. However, I did enjoy the stories and poems I got through before stopping, and will keep an eye out for a print version.
