This was one of the first books I've reviewed for NetGalley which said it had a lot of practical strategies and actually did. Most people tend to oversell and underdeliver in that capacity, but this is a really thorough guide with exactly as many spells as it says it does. Grouped by element, there was a huge variety of rituals which would inspire many. While not everything included was something I would consider, I think this was still worth the read and would be a great reference guide for someone starting out or looking to figure out their own style.
As someone who has always been interested in witchcraft but has never dabbled with it, I was really excited to read this book. Thank you NetGalley & Watkins Publishing for my copy.
I think this book is and will be so useful to so many people; whether you're a total newbie like me, or an experienced practitioner. The book begins by detailing the ettiquete and laws of magic casting, discussing different methods of practice depending on your preference and availability, and going into detail explaining many of the magical buzzwords we've all heard before but don't neccessarily understand (little did I know that a sigil doesn't need to be some great carving in stone and can simply be a drawing with pen and paper!)
I think that's the best thing about this book - it's inexpensive. Many of the books I've picked up about spellcasting before have been somewhat inaccessible to me considering I don't know what crystals do what or where in the world to get different colours of candles from. This book, being a book for the modern witch, has more updated spells and intention casting.. some magic requires only your phone and your energy. I also like that this book has birthday spells, for positive energy before tests and exams, for casting good luck so you don't have travel delays, or to protect your PC from viruses.
I also love that Tree Carr feels very personal in this book, as though she is talking directly to me. None of the language is gendered or eye-rollingly relatable, it's just personable. It's like texting a friend, and getting advice back.
The biggest downside to my copy was that on Kindle I couldn't see the colors in the orginization key, or the illustrations. I guess that means I'll just have to buy my own copy when it's published!
This is cute. A lot of the spells were very easy and simple and while I'm not sure I agree with them (there were a couple that messed with people's free will I felt) I liked the use of the phone to send yourself the spell but felt a lot of it was more about getting clear with yourself what you want.
Overall a cute, easy to read, perfect gift type of book.
Really nicely laid out and easy to understand.
I’m new to the whole thing so was pleased it was kept simple, and basics covered. I want to try some spells but haven’t got the items needed which is a shame. May try them another time.
This is completely new territory for me however my daughter is interested in spells so I thought I’d give it a try.
The book is easy to follow, has clear information, and is set out using the elements.
This would make a lovely gift for someone.
A useful, informative, and easy to follow spell book that can be useful for new and more experienced witches.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
This is a beautiful book which would make an ideal gift for someone who enjoys witchcraft. It has lovely details and I liked how the spells were organised into the elements. The key was clear and the introduction really helped set the scene for the rest of the book.
An incredibly interesting and detailed guide that is great for beginners or anyone who would like to research or learn more about spell craft. The illustrations were beautiful as well and this makes a really fun book. This would also work great as a gift.
This book is absolutely phenomenal. It’s such an easy to follow, detailed guide and is perfect for anybody looking to delve into spellcraft. I love how it makes it so simple and allows the reader to really understand intentions and the purpose of doing daily spells. I’m so grateful to have gotten an ARC of this and I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy!
A beautifully illustrated spell book on how to improve your life and live prosperously. A gorgeous little compendium for those interested in rituals and magic to live life more fully.
This was a really well put together book.
I did find that where wasn't a lot in the way of organisation when it came into each section. It is divided into the elements, Air, Fire, Earth, water and spirit, but beyond that there is little to none in the way or organising where to find the spells you want. There art work was really light and well created. The sectioning each area off with a picture or stars was a really nice touch but I felt there could have been more done with the blank space.
There are so many spells in this that there must be something for every occasion and some were things that I don't feel would be used at all is not rarely. It was a really well thought out book and really well created.
This was a really fascinating read and I definitely enjoyed it, and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in this sort of thing. It’s completely different to what I’d normally read, but nonetheless, I liked it a lot.
What an utterly charming book! Thank you to the author, publisher & NetGalley for an eARC.
For me, A Spell a Day is the perfect book to gift someone special. Highlight two or three spells specific to the reason I am gifting the book (birthday, break-up, new house, etc.). Include the required ingredients for those spells. It would be an easy, personalized, thoughtful gift.
The book does get repetitive read cover to cover. I wish there was a bit more diversity in the spells themselves. But as a reference book, it is lovely. The illustrations are darling. Although the explanation at the beginning of the book is brief, I found it to be thorough.
This book was a joy to read and I look forward to picking up a copy when it is published.
I found it very informative and easy to read, would recommend it to anyone who practices magick daily. She talks about safety first before doing any of the spells in the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be purchasing a copy of my own for my collection. I like the way the author splits their spells up into elements, and sort of makes it work with the wheel of the year. It was instructional without being too wordy and I look forward to trying a few of those spells soon!
ARC NETGALLEY REVIEW
From the first page to the last the author is clear about where she’s coming from in her beliefs and intentions, very rare now a days. She clear and informative without watering things down. Highly recommend to anyone starting out, wanting find a more natural path to spell working, without all the BS cultish beliefs mixed in.
Very disappointing. It seems very uneducated and directed at the beginner level who knows no better. Some of it was very questionable and appeared as if the author just took a mixture of other books and mixed them together into one book, unaware of the various spiritual paths that are being mixed into one. I don't recommend. There are much better books with this focus out there.
I've tried a handful of these spells and am very pleased.
This is a nice little book that is perfect for those that don't know where to start with spells. All are easy enough and the majority of them only need things that one can easily put a finger on.
The only thing that I didn't like, was that pictures that were included were not visible in the kindle version but I'm sure that this will soon be sorted before publication.
Thankyou to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this ARC.
I found this to be a very detailed instruction book.
I think it also made it very easy for beginners.
This book had something for everyone and think it would be a good gift.
Thankyou
3/5 stars
This one is very definitely targeted at new witchlings. Some of the spells like passing exams and getting into a good college suggest it's directed at high school age, though there is material that would be of use to more mature readers as well.
It was very different than I expected from the title. I thought there might be little 365 spells for each day of the year, offering simple spells for beginners to practice. That wasn't the case. Some of the spells are for Moon phases when it's in specific signs, but otherwise the spell information had no date connections, but were more general ideas for spells to do when you want to.
There were a few things I disagreed with like you always have to cast a circle (you don't) and a spell to make your ex call you (you definitely don't), but generally the correspondences were good and there was a lot of material of use for new witches who need some direction to get started.
I did disagree with using Tarot cards in the spells because I think a witch needs a working knowledge of Tarot before blindly using this method, but I suppose it's fairly harmless even if the result isn't what you would get from someone more familiar with the symbols and energies of the cards.
Overall a reasonably good beginner's book on spellcraft ideas.
