I love finding books with at home science experiments that I can do with my kids during or backyard summer camp. I was so excited for this take on it (combining holiday themes with science?! Sign me up!). However, I struggled with the experiments in this book because I felt they were either so easy they weren’t exciting (hydrating black eyed peas) to really complex (finding carbon sulfate to make my own sparklers?!) There were very few middle of the road experiments that were simple yet effective (I was looking for baking soda/vinegar level of ease and excitement) so I was a bit let down. I think this could be a good resource for a teacher with access to materials but an audience that isn’t ready to do experiments on their own but for the average mom, this wasn’t quite right for my needs.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.
There were activities that will make one involved for whole holiday period. Food science, Chemistry and many more concepts cleared with clarity via this book. There were Key concepts, Background behind the procedure, Materials list, Preparation, Instructions/procedures, etc...
Worth enjoying and time spending.
This book would be great for parent sot use at home and work through the scientific process. The book does a good job outlining the experiments and helping think through the process. I think kids and parents would have fun with them.
Holiday Science by Scientific American Editors - 5/5
This fun Holiday Science book consists of 10 different chemistry and food science projects. This has been such a fun book to dive into now that we are in the middle of summer and scorching high temperatures. The science projects are easy to try with step-by-step instructions, illustrations to guide your way and easy enough for all ages. I tried these with my children's ages between 5 to 14.
Thank you NetGalley and Rosen Publishing Group for the eARC
This is an easy to use, very hands on approach to science experiments for every major holiday of the year from New Years through Thanksgiving. There are step by step instructions and detailed list of items that will be required to complete the project as well as ways to add extra dimensions to make is science fair worthy. It breaks down how long it will take to complete each project, the science behind how each works and details on what you can expect to happen and how much clean up will be involved.
As a Sunday school teacher, I will be using this as a fun way to grab the attention of my students. Though I haven’t yet tried any of them, I do expect to try the tie dye egg one with the silk ties this week.
Thanks to Scientific American Educational Publishing and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
This hands on book features ten fun projects for any time of year but each are geared toward a holiday. Create a ghoulish glow-in-the-dark water for Halloween or brew green, bubbly soda around St. Patrick’s Day and/or literally tie dye some eggs for Easter.
Step-by-step instructions and vivid illustrations will guide young and older scientists through each activity. Note the experiments will need adult supervision as they involve some items that one needs to be careful using such as bleach and copper sulphate.
While a lot of fun, a few of the experiments can be a bit involved so read and follow the instructions carefully.
The format of the book to me is the highlight. . It’s very colorful where each experiment includes:
A scientific question
Projected completion time
Key concepts
Background behind the procedure
Materials list
Preparation
Instructions/procedures
Extras if one chooses
Observations snd results
Cleanup you will encounter
I recommend this for educators, parent educator, and while this reader didn’t actually conduct any of the experiments, I had fun reading about the science.
This has lots of great activities. I teach 8th grade science and these fit well within our curriculum and would make excellent enrichment. I especially like that a lot of this is "kitchen" science and makes suggestions on where to pick up the materials.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
