Every so often I come across a sleeper of a psych thriller – one that feels like it will be run-of-the-mill…before it absolutely punches me in the face with twists and unexpected turns. The Woman at Number 6 by Matthew Farrell fits this description perfectly.
I will admit, it took me a bit to get into the swing of this one. It was difficult for me to grasp who I could trust and what was really going on. However, that changed with one event.
Then it was off to the races!
Honestly, the plot of this book is an absolute roller coaster. There is the slow climb where the groundwork is laid for what is to come. It makes the reader even a little impatient, because you just hope that the rest is exciting.
Once you reach the tip top – right before swooping into the heart of the story – there’s anticipation. Because there is a moment where the reader truly does not know which way the author is going to go.
And then…..
It’s dips and twists and turns as events fall into place creating an amazing page-turner of a psych thriller, right up until the climax.
But even then, there are still a few tricks up the author’s sleeve – and I mean to the very last words.
Tracy was a mysterious character. We learn that she has a haunted past. That comes out in short snippets. I liked this approach because it wasn’t the usual “Then and Now” that is common in psych thrillers.
Not that there’s anything wrong with them. But these were treated more like her memories, which made it feel more organic.
I also liked how I really had no idea who to trust throughout the entire plot. Is Missy in cahoots with Tracy, or does she have an ulterior motive? Is Malcolm as bad as we think? What is the connection to Dr. Davi? And where does Kat really figure into all of it?
I’m. Not. Telling.
But hang onto your seats, because the author answers all of these questions in truly spectacular fashion.
Can you tell that I loved this book? Well, I did. The Woman at Number 6 is absolutely everything a reader could ask for in a psych thriller – and then some. I can’t wait to see what Matthew Farrell comes up with next!

The Woman at Number 6 is the first book I've read by Matthew Farrell, and it has left me wanting to read more of his work. Plot aside, I really enjoyed his writing style. Tracy and Malcolm appear, to everyone else, to be happily married, but one day Tracy asks for a divorce. This then leads the reader down a brilliantly well-executed and twisty path of whys, whos and hows, where we learn about Malcolm's affair and the real reasons Tracy is ending their marriage. Past and present are intertwined well and suspense is built towards an exciting conclusion. A really enjoyable thriller.
This twisty corkscrew of a ride will give you whiplash!
This book was a blend of domestic suspense meets police procedural. It started off like the former with Tracy leaving her husband and taking with her therapist. But then it takes a turn, and another, and another...
On her way home to talk things out with her husband, a car is tailing her. When Tracy takes a back road in an effort to ditch this person, she soon finds out that she failed in doing so. Next thing she knows her car is being pushed in the river. While she manages to get out before it fully goes under, she runs. Her pursuer follows and what happened from there is revealed through several scenes as the book goes on.
In the meantime, there are two police investigations. There is one involving the murder of a lawyer and one Tracy's disappearance. But who exactly was this lawyer and how is her murder at all connected with the story? You'll need to read the book to find out.
I don't want to say too much more to risk giving spoilers, but if you like complicated, layered stories, this is not one to be missed! I highly recommend.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
This was a fantastic thrill ride. My mouth is still hanging open. You know there is something very strange going on, but you cannot fully appreciate the full picture until you arrive at the end of the book. There are twists, turns, betrayal, mystery and something sinister going on just below the surface that you just cannot quite put your finger on.
From the outside looking in Malcolm and Tracy had the perfect life and perfect marriage, with a handsome son to add to their jeweled life. That fantasy all comes tumbling down when Tracy sees Malcolm with another woman. She has a plan, but her plans are shattered on her way home when a car pushes her from behind into the water. Once it is apparent that Tracy has disappeared, Malcolm is the number one suspect. He swears he knows nothing about her disappearance and does not know if his wife is dead or alive.
This book had me clawing for air as I tried to figure out who could be trusted and who was untrustworthy. The book will take you back to the past as the past and the present crash together to a show stopping conclusion. I could see this book being made into a nail biting movie. I would advise you to set aside some time when you start this book because you will not be able to put it down.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
My first Matthew Farrell book but definitely won’t be my last. Hooked from the beginning and I enjoyed through the final twist. Great characters!
So many secrets, lies and a few handfuls of deceit. Dark and creepy vibes. Loved it.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
This book was originally titled The Marriage Break-Up which I think was a perfect fit for the book and cover, not sure why the name changed or what made them choose the new one. The synopsis of this book is about Tracy, a woman who decides to leave her husband without specifying the reason to him. Soon after she is kidnapped, and the reader is taken on a ride to find out who is keeping Tracy and who can she trust.
The book has many twists and turns. It like pulling off a mask to uncover the next mask and the next. The book definitely delivers with twists, shockers, and surprises. I do feel it was a tad bit longer than it needed to be, but I loved the ending!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this arc for an honest review..
I actually enjoyed reading this one! I was blown away with the twists and definitely didn’t guess some of them. I’m glad I stumbles upon this author. I loved his writing style a lot!
Thanks so much for the Arc!
My synopsis: Out of the blue, Tracy asks for a divorce and then walks out the door. Her husband, Malcolm is confused. He didn't see this coming. Missy, Tracy's sister, goes over to the house to show Malcolm her support. She's also baffled with Tracy's decision. Tracy has everything...a husband, an adorable son, a nice home. Why would she want to lose all of that?
Then the police finds out that Malcolm was having an affair. His mistress happened to be murdered the same day his wife disappeared. With those to coincidence, Malcolm looks good for both cases especially when hid DNA was found all over his mistresses crime scene.
Rating: I rated this book a 4 star. It started off slow but the speed picked up really fast. These writing styles are my favorite kind. It's written in the characters' POV but in a third person format. The plot thickens more as you continue reading. Just when I think I've figured out what happened, another twist comes out and I'm second guessing myself. This is my first book from this author buf definitely won't be my last!
This was a rather quick thriller read.
There was a lot going on in this book, a lot of little players and quick comments that snowballed into bigger concepts. Overall this book was a little bit messy in my opinion, this feels like a debut novel that the author wanted to include all of their favorites thriller hooks about mistaken identity, hostage situation, past history, and framing another person for a crime.
It was an interesting read but I don't think I would read this one again.
I was not ready for all the twists and turns.
Side Note: This novel was titled The Marriage Break-up, but I guessed they're changing it to The Woman at Number 6.
Tracy had just told her husband, Malcolm, she wanted a divorce. Not soon after, the police received a panicking call from Tracy. When the police turned at their home, Malcolm swears he had nothing to do with Tracy's disappearance. Can Malcolm be trusted? Is he the one behind Tracy's disappearance or was it someone else?
This story had me on the edge of my seat! I wasn't sure who to trust. Then right when I thought I had everything figured out, the author throws in twist after twist! If you're a fan of thrillers, this is a must-read!
Highly recommend!
***Thank you to NetGalley, Matthew Farrell, and Bookouture for graciously sending me the ARC to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
Out of the blue one morning Tracy asks her husband Malcolm for a divorce and then walks out of the house leaving her husband in shock. That same evening Tracy goes missing. The police are called and it’s pretty clear that Malcolm is a person of interest.
Tracy’s sister Missy comes over to support Malcolm and his son Finn but it soon becomes clear she also suspects Malcolm. For Malcolm things go from bad to worse when it emerges that the woman who he was having an affair with turns up dead, but still things get worse. She was murdered on the same day Tracy went missing.
Soon the police link these 2 cases and things aren’t looking good for Malcolm when his DNA is found all over the crime seen at his deceased lovers house.
I really loved the marriage break up and I will definitely be looking out for more books by Matthew Farrell ad I love his writing style. It is fast paced, action packed and has plenty to keep the reader interested.
At times I did find this book a little predictable however this didn’t take away from the enjoyment of reading and I have to say I absolutely did not see that incredible twist right at the end coming. That was absolutely genius!!!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
I'm not sure why the title of this has been changed to The Woman at Number 6 from The Marriage Break-Up as the latter title suits the book far better. Tracy tells her husband she is leaving him and later that day she disappears. Her car is found in a lake. Has she been murdered, kidnapped or is she in hiding. Police are certain her husband Malcolm is behind it all.
This is a readable psychological thriller. with many twists and turns which keep you guessing and on this level the book is very successful. I wanted more though. For me, the characters lacked depth and I couldn't really relate to them. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
The Marriage Breakup (now called The Woman at Number 6) is an outstanding thriller about a woman who suddenly tells her husband she wants a divorce, and then vanishes.
I read this book in one sitting on an airplane. It kept me in its grip the entire time, with so many “OMG” moments. The twists and thrills throughout kept me constantly guessing and reaching for more, while the ending just left me speechless!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
To be published: April 26 2023
Twists, twists and more twists! I lost count of the amount of OMG moments! Just when I thought the book was coming to the end, there was one more shocker! This was definitely a thriller of epic proportions! Cannot recommend highly enough!
This was called The Marriage Breakup but the blurb and title has now changed. I'll be reviewing The Marriage Breakup as read.
The Marriage Breakup centres around the disappearance of Tracy after asking her husband for a divorce that morning, following a year of therapy.
It was a nice, easy read, with good plot pacing and a writing style with flow that keeps the reader interested.
There are a lot of twists and turns in the story and a few red herrings thrown in for good measure. The house phone was a nice touch to the story.
As a few reviewers have said, it felt like there was just one twist too many in the plot.
This was called The Marriage Break-up but is now called The Woman at Number 6 by Matthew Farrell
A woman tells her husband she wants a divorce, and later that day she goes missing. Was this a coincidence? This book was a psychological thriller that also had me up at the crack of dawn trying to figure out what was going on. At first this book is slow paced, which honestly I hated, but if you push through it gets really good! This books had too many twists and turns to count, and I didn’t even see one coming which is why I love psychological thrillers! This books also gives off major Criminal Minds vibes, if you’re in to that show, it happens to be my favorite show so I think that’s why I enjoyed the book so much! The ending will have you questioning everything. I finished this book 3 days ago and I’m still wondering about the ending. Overall I give this book a 4.5/5
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture, and Matthew Farrell for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own!

I was literally glued to my kindle and did not put it down all day.
This book was the full package.
I found myself questioning everyone in this book and i couldn't trust anyone.
I did not see the ending coming, to tell you i was shocked!
I love dual POV, this is a favourite of mine.
Thankyou again, i would recommend this to everyone wanting a great thriller.
5/5 stars
Fast paced mystery. Tracy is missing after asking her husband for a divorce and Kat has been murdered. Two separate cases or are they connected. Lots of twists and no one is as they seem. Enjoyable read Was called the marriage break up
