This book is too long. DNF at 60%. 2 stars.
************I received an ARC for my honest opinion from NetGalley,************
Unfortunately, after multiple attempts I have been unable to get into this book. It felt very slow for me and the characters were not likable which made it hard to root for them and enjoy the story. Due to that I have decided to soft DNF the book and potentially pick it up at a later date.
This book was a struggle to get through. So many miscommunication issues and I never liked the main character. She never really grew or changed until the very end of the book.
Fun and aspirational, this book was a delight and perfect as a summer read. I cannot wait to plan my summer in Sicily now.
A very cute rom-com with a stunning setting! I adored this book and the characters. The cover is so beautiful!
A perfect summer read. Full of lovely heartwarming characters and lazy summer landscapes and settings nideal For those summer holidays and bank holidays. Indulge yourself in this warm read this summer time you won’t regret it.
I received am arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. When Gillian decides to surprise her husband in Sicily, it goes all wrong. This is a nice summer read but I found Gillian an annoying main character as she was so critical of herself and her old age of (36).
The perfect summer read! This cover is also really cute so this is a plus. The character in this book is so likeable. I will recommend to everyone.
I dont like the cheating trope but I found this really heartwarming how she found her happy ending after all. I enjoyed this. Quick and fun!
This was such a cute rom-com. What Gillian thought was travesty eventually led her to finding happiness. Gillian finds out that her husband has been cheating on her. She is then thrown into the arms of another man, who she thought was in a relationship. Come to find out, he is not! It was a very cute read. The only downfall I felt like were the comments regarding her weight throughout the book. Otherwise, it was a great read.
Very interesting read! The book pulled me in from the start and I wanted to see how it ended. Try it and see if this book is for you!
Let’s start by saying Gillian is such a strong, independent women. I love that she turned probably one of the worst days of her life into a day of rebirth! Obviously she still has her moments, I mean she did just leave a 25 year marriage.
This book is full of amazing characters that are so built out. It is a a quick, fun beach read, that also has some funny moments build into there as well!
This is definitely a book that can be binged in one sitting, or broken out into a nice weekend in the sunny scenery of Sicily. it also has a hallmark feel which we all know that I am a sucker for those!
There are many unanswered questions about her now ex-husband, but I kind of love that about this book.I love the way that she is able to stand up for herself no matter what is going on in her mind and fully cut him off, basically since she doesn’t know what’s going on with him the reader doesn’t either. I think this is such a powerful way to show Gillian’s new independence and her strong-will that we see starting to grow throughout the book.
I did not end up finishing this book. The synopsis caught my attention but I just don't think this one was for me.
Nancy Barone’s One Summer in Sicily is a witty, charming and wonderfully romantic tale that is impossible to resist.
Gillian Dobson hates flying, but determined to save her marriage, she decides to surprise her husband of twenty years by accompanying him on a business trip to the Sicilian island of Lipari in order to rekindle the spark between them. Only what Gillian didn’t realise what that her husband already had company on this trip – female company, that is! Devastated, heartbroken and dejected, Gillian cannot handle any more shocks and surprises – but fate has other ideas as she discovers when she narrowly avoids being in a car accident and meets gorgeous Italian Mattia Spadara, who makes George Clooney look shabby!
With Mattia sharing her passion for lip-smackingly delicious Sicilian desserts, Gillian quickly realises that resistance is futile and that giving into temptation is inevitable and pretty soon it’s not just Mattia’s cakes and pastries she will find hard to say no to. Will this trip to Sicily give Gillian the new beginning she didn’t know she needed? Can she bid arrivederci to her husband and start afresh in Italy? Or will she let this unexpected chance at happiness slip through her fingers?
Nancy Barone’s One Summer in Sicily is romantic escapism at its best. A fun read sprinkled with wit, emotion, humour and mouth-watering descriptions of food, One Summer in Sicily is a book it is hard not to fall in love with!
Nancy Barone’s enchanting tale of fresh starts, finding happiness and tender romance is even more delicious than a glass of limoncello and I recommend romantics everywhere buy a copy of One Summer in Sicily.
This book was such a nice summer read. I can definitely see myself laying on the beach reading this book until the sun goes down.
The book made me feel every emotion under the book and I just wanted more.
"One Summer in Sicily" by Nancy Barone is a captivating love story set against the beautiful backdrop of Sicily. Barone's storytelling is vivid, filled with warmth and cultural richness. The characters' journey of self-discovery and romance creates a delightful and engaging summer read.
This was a fun lighthearted summer book read. I enjoyed the premise of the story itself and many of the side characters where more like able than the primary. What I wish the book had done was take a more positive turn on Gillian’s self discovery. I also felt as if she did not experience much growth and appreciation of self (all it took was weight loss and a partner). That being said, I still enjoyed the book.
This is an entertaining read, just right for the Summer. You get a real feeling for the community of Lipari and the sunshine permeates the whole story. Gillian has a lot to come to terms with about herself. She has real issues about her age and her weight, underlined by her husband’s tactless remarks.
There are some likeable characters who all have their own backstories. Gillian’s reactions are often over the top and add to the humour. Starting over us the major theme of the story. Gillian does not always recognise what is happening and misinterprets people’s reactions to her. Her warm heart and generosity mark her out and you can understand why she is welcomed by the community. This is fun and uplifting reading.
In short: heartwarming story with humour and romance.
After a woman decides to fly out to Sicily to surprise her husband on a business trip in an attempt to revive her stale relationship actually ends up being the reason her 25 year marriage ends. She decides to reinvent herself and her life in the same town her old life ended. A story of a change in life plans and accepting the new and changing relationships that come with age. It was a nice story in a beautiful location but I felt I couldn’t relate to the story and didn’t feel drawn to or lost in the beauty of Italy like I was hoping I would.
I received an advanced review copy of this book and give my opinion voluntarily.
such a cute story, I really enjoyed it!
