I wish NetGalley noted anywhere in the description that this is not the full book, only a sampler. I see many reviews pointing this out as well.
That aside, I of course am very excited for the full book to release! The chapter sampler was entertaining and fun and I'm excited to spend more time with these characters.
This sneak peek to Mark Oshiro’s and Rick Riordan’s The Sun and the Star is exactly what I look for in a novel in the Percy Jackson universe. Full of humor, even in the midst of intense cinematic moments, and great character interiority that showed the humanity of characters that once felt so untouchable.
This opening did a great job showing what’s at stake for these beloved characters as well as making me so excited for what journey this story is going to be. I’m absolutely ready to pick up the full work once it’s released to the world.
An excerpt that makes you excited to read the full story ! I can't way to dive back into this world of love, friendship and battles ❤️.
This was just the first five chapters of The Sun and the Star but they were so good! Nico and Will are getting reading to go on a quest to Tartarus to bring back Bob the Titan. I can’t wait for this book to be out. I’m really hoping for lots of Will and Nico moments as a couple throughout the entire book!
Thank you netgalley for the sampler!
I feel slightly mislead, because nowhere that I could find, did this say it was only an extended excerpt.
However, if Rick Riordan writes it, I will love it. This is no exception. I don't know what to say except I love Nico and Will and Camp HalfBlood and I desperately want more.

This chapter sampler provides a peek of the first five chapters of The Sun and the Star, a new book in the Riordanverse in which Nico di Angelo accepts a quest that will take him and his boyfriend, Will Solace, to the depths of the underworld in hopes of bringing back Bob, a reformed Titan. While this is co-authored. the jokes present in Riordan’s other works were not left out, which I loved. Just with these five chapters, I’m already needing more. I can’t wait for the full book!

This is just a teaser of what the book holds. It's enough to wet your reading appetite to want more. This is Nico's quest. He's not sure if it's a setup or an attempt to save an old friend. If he fails, he'll never be found. There are some old characters from previous books mentioned, however this can be read as a standalone. I can't wait to read the entire book.
This was a preview of the first five chapters of The Sun And The Star. A wonderful start to Will and Nico's story. I am very excited to read the rest of it.
Thank you NetGalley for the first 5 chapters the read and review. My full review will be available on Goodreads after publication. As always, Rick Riordan manages to hit the full spectrum of emotions in practically every chapter. Nico definitely has some serious issues after all he has been through and Will knows him better than he knows himself. I look forward to seeing this play out in the full book come May. And hopefully we will get a look at a few favorites.
Soooo good! It was great to see the first few chapters of this much-anticipated read. I will admit, just a couple things felt a bit fanfiction-y to me, but overall, this got me so excited for the entire book to release in May! I can't believe it's only a month away. I think this will be a great look into one of our favorite character's lives.
(Also, his full name is Niccolo? Cool!)
Will edit when on GoodReads when full version is out:
The first chapters of this book are deeply satisfying and everything I have ever wanted. Riordan’s decision to team up with Mark Oshiro is incredibly well thought!
I can’t wait to read the rest!
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read the first 5 chapters of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am so happy to get something from Nico's perspective. He's been one of my favorite side characters from Percy Jackson and the Olympians (PJO) and Heroes of Olympus (HoO), and it's great to see his thoughts. On that note, I think it would have been better for it to have been 1st person POV, like PJO was, instead of narrow 3rd person, like the revolving character chapters of HoO, since I'm assuming the entire book is from Nico's POV.
The inclusion of Nico's native language in one of his nightmares was a wonderful touch, reminding us that he's Italian, not just Greek, and that was his first language.
I love how much Nico loves his boyfriend, and it's clear from body language and everything Will says in chapter 5 that the feelings are strong and mutual. I look forward to seeing how it progresses.
Mr. D is still one of the funniest but most frustrating characters. Gods, I love him.
I can't wait to see how the rest of the book is, cuz these first 50 or so pages were great!
Thanks again to Netgalley!
**this will probably be updated once I've read the full book**
Thank you for the opportunity to read this sample! I really enjoyed this little snippet, and cannot wait for the full version. I was afraid I would be too old for the world (26), but it was just just as enjoyable as when I was in middle/high school.
The Sun and The Star picks up after the Heroes of Olympus with Nico and Will at Camp Half-Blood once the events of the previous adventure have calmed down. Well, they appear to have calmed down, but Nico is inwardly tormented by voices and horrible dreams calling him to a quest to return to Tartarus. In what I can only describe as an absolute delightful exchange between Nico, Will, Chiron, and Mr. D (who I actually kind of love in this book), it is decided that Will will accompany Nico on his quest.
The tone of this book definitely strikes differently than the previous series - it’s more tender and thoughtful in my opinion, almost a more mature and wise telling than Percy’s sarcastic and unfiltered narrations. I think this is indicative of the difference in main characters. Nico seems to be very aware of his personal trauma and how it affects his feelings and behavior. The overall feel to me was a more grown-up and nuanced story, but still with the humor and action typically associated with Riordan’s books.
I only read the first few chapters, but you can bet that I have the complete book preordered to read in its entirety once it releases on May 2! Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Books for the Advanced Reading Copy excerpt!
I basically grew up on Percy Jackson, so this book already has a special place in my heart, especially as Riordan (and Oshiro!) expand the world of Camp Half-Blood and beyond. While I think that this book is probably best understood and has the most emotional impact if you’ve read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Heroes of Olympus, and Trials of Apollo series, I think it’s probably possible to skip the Trials of Apollo before diving into this one. THE SUN AND THE STAR has a different feeling in some ways than the Percy Jackson books, but it still feels like the classic Riordanverse that I’ve known and loved.
To sum it all up, I am both incredibly scared and excited for this book to come out, and while this teaser was absolutely great it’s absolutely ruined my life (in the best way possible) for the next few months!
This was a small chapter sample and not the whole book available as an ARC from NetGalley. The review is my own.
It is great to have more of Nico's story. I like how Rick Riordan builds each book and each series, even though you can read each series independently of each other, it is better reading everything that ties together. Rick Riordan had Nico playing a role in the Heroes of Olympus, but now he is finally getting a book to himself, where he had to admit that he had a crush on Percy, got over it, and is now with Will. This teaser really made me want to read the whole book.
This chapter sampler already proves to be a spectacular dive back into the world of Camp Half-Blood!
From the start, the writing was tugging at my heart from equal parts nostalgia and the gripping stakes. The situation right from the start seems to be rather dire. As it jumps into the first chapter, the writing is so immersive and fun, bringing the reader back to Camp Half-Blood and giving a nice summary as to what Nico is up to these days. And it was all so refreshing to see him evolve from the other series, yet still be so tied down to the trauma he experienced.
The voice also felt distinct, which I love because this becomes it's own thing, even if it goes back to flash through various moments from past books. As a reader, you can tell this is new and fresh, and you can't help but keep reading.
The setup is also very nice so far! Will wanted Nico to take some time off, and Nico looked like he really wished he could, but his past traumas and that voice he keeps hearing doesn't allow him, which then leads directly to their unavoidable quest. So there's a definite call to action while also showing the reader the state of Nico's mind.
This book already proves to be a sweeping adventure just from the first few chapters!
I am so incredibly excited to read this full book!!! This chapter teaser gave us a small glimpse at the adventure that awaits. I have loved Nico from the very beginning and cannot wait to see a book dedicated to him and his love!!!
In true Rick Riordan fashion, this book grabs your attention from the beginning. I appreciate the way events from previous books are woven in without making the reader feel like he's retelling the whole story. I look forward to reading the rest of this book when it is released!
