God this is so stunning to revisit the PJO world. I love revisiting secondary characters who meant so much to me in the original series. I love the contrasting writing styles of Mark and Rick. This was gorgeous.
I absolutely loved returning back to Rick Riordan's universe, and a queer romance made it even more special. I also loved this collab with Mark Oshiro! Will and Nico's journey to Tartarus was so cute and amazing to read. Love that two queer kids can just exist and go on adventures without being questioned along the way.
I read the short excerpt that makes you want more! I cannot wait to read the rest!!
Thank you NetGalley and Disney Hyperion for the eARC!
Nico is one of my favorite characters and I'm so happy that his story has been expanded!!
This was a great adventure back into the world of Percy Jackson after a long time away. I really loved getting to see more of Nico's story.
I adored the book. I had been waiting for more Nico content for a LONG time, and I loved him. Not only that, but I also loved Will. My favorite thing about it was the complexity of their relationship. My favorite Riordanverse couple is Percabeth, but we have never dived this deep into them like we did with Solangelo. I loved how real and credible their relationship felt despite being in a completely fantastical environment. It had that signature Rick spark and I think Mark Oshiro's voice brought a fresh vibe and I loved it.
One of the best books that I have read this year!!!! I love the writing, the characters, the adventure! Everything about this book was fantastic and it showed so many feelings! The writing style is so unique and I was blown away by the layout.
Btw. The audiobook is incredible too!!
"Lonely souls finding one another is always a good thing."
Finding the words to explain how special it is to live in the world of Percy Jackson and the Olympians again is impossible. To know there's more to come feels like a dream I'll be living for the rest of my life. I grew up loving Percy, loving his friends, feeling for them the way he does, and to see them become their own main characters... there aren't enough words.
It just goes to show that we can all become main characters for being a side character in someone else's life. Whether it be when we're 11, 16, or any age before and after.
I loved getting to know Nico's story, be a part of his mind when he first came into Rick's world. He was just a little boy, one who lost his only support system, and had to find his own way in a world where he could only be made of darkness. This book embodied that so perfectly. How he was a dark soul, came from a dark life, and ventured into a dark future.
I love that this book never made that feel small, or unsubstantial. That it was just as important to accept that darkness as it was to let a little light in. Nico's light comes from the son of a sun god, Will. At least, it started there. Because the paths we walk to our happiness often start with the spark of a person we are meant to love in one way or another, at least, that's what I've found. And we always find them when we least expect them.
Find them when we need them most.
I have always been the biggest fan of the dark vs light love story. The vampire and the human, the shaodws and the sunshine. Nico and Will embodied that and more. It could be because when I first met him he felt like a little brother, but I came out of this story feeling more proud of Nico than I ever have of any other character in my life.
He deserves all the good that is coming to him, and more. I hope we get to see more of his main character story. We all know just how much he deserves it for finding his shine in the darkness.
We don't have to stay in the box the people around us force us into. We don't have to be one thing for our entire life. Love grows around pain, and we can become someone new. I'm so glad Nico learned to embrace that in this book. I'm so glad Will waited until he was ready to join him there.
This was an advanced look at the first 5 chapters of Nico’s newest book. This made me extremely excited to read about his new adventures with Will. Thank you for the preview!
Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Publishing for this DRC.
An adventure that takes place almost entirely in the Underworld, Nico di Angelo and Will Solace must help Bob and small Bob, by traversing Tartarus and not letting his father, Hades, find out. Nothing ever goes right, but Nico and Will continue to nurture their relationship under the hottest of circumstances.
I liked this book although it did have a slower pace than other Rick Riordan books. Maybe because they are older? Guess I don’t want to grow up.

This book was everything I wanted it to be and more! There were a ton of fun cameos from some of my favorite characters, and I'm now going to go back and read the Trials of Apollo series. Nico and Will supremacy!!
So much nostalgia! I can't wait for the new Percy Jackson book!
I liked all the references to other past characters locations and events.
I enjoyed the descriptive world building.
Percy Jackson’s Will and Nico are back with their own story set in the world of Percy Jackson.
Nico, the son of Hades, has lost his mother, his sister, and a close friend. He’s also been outed against his will for dating Will Solace, son of Apollo. Now Nico is heading off on a quest to Tauratus and Will is insisting on coming along. But Nico is nervous that a son of Apollo won’t make it in the underworld.
Our kids love that Nico and Will got their own stand-alone story. They are fan-favorite characters that deserved their time in the spotlight.
This is a preview of the new Rick Riordan novel from the world of Percy Jackson.
As someone who's a fan of this Riordanverse, I'm so excited to read this. And it doesn't disappointed me.
The sun and the star tell the story about Nico and Will, who planned to go to Tartarus to answer a cry for help from an old friend.
Even though nostalgia is a strong factor, but the few chapters if this preview managed to made me want to read more.
The more I think about this book, the lower I want to rate it. So, let's just get this over with before The Sun and the Star has a negative star rating from me.
Following the events of the Trials of Apollo arc, this book is focused on Nico DeAngelo and his boyfriend Will Solace getting a mysterious (and totally legit) quest to go down to Tartarus to save Bob, reformed Titan who was left behind to close the Doors of Death several books back.
Did I mention that Will and Nico are boyfriends? I did? Well wait 30 seconds and I'll tell you again. And again.
And again. Oh wait? A whole chapter has gone by? Let's manufacture some stupid gay misunderstanding with an npc so we can yet *again* mention that Will and Nico are boyfriends. Come on. These two demigods who have proven themselves several times over have been reduced a cheesey, and frankly terrible, teenage drama. They are literally traversing Hell and yet it talks more about their pet names for each other than the actual plot. Never in my life did I think this book would turn Nico De Angelo into "oh hey I cry at night. My boyfriend is more adorable than my life. uwu uwu uwu".
That said, this was my most anticipated book of the year and it is now my biggest reading disappointment of the year.
The Sun and The Star, at its core does not feel like it is a Percy Jackson book. It feels like really bad Nico/Will fanfiction and somehow, I think you would have found a better fanfiction that had more loyalty to the source material by searching on A03 for five minutes.
The Sun and The Star is what happens if twitter therapy became a book. Commercialized, inauthentic, and problematic.
The Sun and the Star seems to be an example of "On book 17 our original universe died in a fire, so we're retconning it for content."
Does Hades just give prophecies now? I can get behind Hades being a more caring parent than the rest of the Olympians. He's proven that he will go to extreme lengths to keep Bianca and Nico alive in the past, but this? What the heck was the scene at the end? And didn't Nico just straight up not remember his past *for his own safety*? Why are we getting flashbacks now? And why are we ragging on Percy and Annabeth for leaving Bob in Tartarus when we know full well it took the acts of several Olympian gods and a literal army to help support closing the doors to Tartarus in the first place?
I desperately wanted this to be good. I still hold hope for Chalice coming out soon. Save your time and skip this one if you care about the previous books at all. Nico and Will deserved better. Heck, the development of their relationship deserved better.
Thoroughly enjoyable for all of Riordan's fans! Lots of adventure and representation. A great continuation of Nico's story with heartbreaking and realistic development
I loved this excerpt of Rick Riordan's new book and it was wonderful to return to another story with these familiar characters! It's great that Nico is finally the central character in one of these books and I can't wait to read the whole book and find out how this story goes!
Thank you as alway to Netgalley and publishers for giving me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I will be completely honest, I am no longer the target audience for this series however, when I heard Nico and Will were getting their own book I immediately not only requested for an arc but went out to buy a physical copy. The Sun and the Star is a heartwarming book that follows boyfriends Nico di Angelo and Will Solace as they travel through tartarus and face internal and external demons This book is a love letter to the queer community, and while a bit different than expected for other Percy Jackson books, I absolutely adored it. This book series truly has my heart!
Nico has been hearing a voice, a voice he's tried to ignore calling from Tartarus. And when the prophecy insists he knows he has to go and rescue Bob the Titan. His boyfriend, Will, is going to accompany him, but can a child of Apollo, a son of the light survive in the depths and darkness of Tartarus. Nico barely survived the last time he was there and is not looking forward to doing what needs to be done. And what exactly is he going to have to leave behind?
Love Love Loved this peek at the first couple of chapters of Rick Riordan's new book! Can't wait to read the whole thing! Nico is such a fun character, having to deal with his looses but also with the darkness that comes from being a son of Hades. I love that not only does he have quite a bit of depression and pessimism the people who care about him are always there through everything. Whether he wants the help or not. Can't wait for more!
This was just an excerpt from the book, but it was enough to get me abundantly excited for the full thing. Nico and Will finally get a book of their own to not only explore their relationship, but to see how the two work together as the son of Hades and the son of Apollo. Talk about opposites attract.
Rick Riordan cowriting this with Mark Oshiro is what originally piqued my interest in this book, before I had even read any Percy Jackson. Oshiro has proven to be such a nuanced storyteller and the fact that Riordan knew their voice was the one needed for a queer character made me have so much faith and trust going in.
I'm fully invested in the hype of this book!
