I really enjoyed "The Hike" by Lucy Clarke. I always like to read novels with different povs and the interesting setting (Norway) was an added bonus. I found the beginning to be a little slow but once "the hike" started I was invested.

Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for my digital arc in exchange for my honest review.

THE HIKE has interesting characters that every reader can relate to at least one of. While it's slow to start, once you're immersed in the story it takes off. The perfect popcorn thriller for the survivalist thriller lover. Clarke did well at making each character distinct and unique.

This was a fun thriller. If you like books set outdoors, you'll especially love this one as we follow 4 women on a hike in Norway. It got very spooky and twisty around 70% in, and I had to keep reading to find out what would happen. I kept changing my mind as to what I thought was going to happen next-that's a sign of a good thriller.

This was a fun quick read, it wasn’t my favorite by this author, but it was good to pull me out of a slump. The characters were decently developed, especially for an action thriller. Overall, I would recommend if someone wanted a fun weekend read

This book started off a little slow but once I got into it, I got sucked in and finished it rather quickly. A group.of 4 women go hiking but run into trouble. The main characters weren't really likeable but the book held my attention

3.75 Stars

I was all in on this book from the beginning even though I pretty much hated everyone which is a tough thing for me bc usually if I can't connect with a character I'll bail. This was really gripping and hard to put down even though I'd figured some things out along the way it was still engaging that it didn't diminish anything.

It took me a minute to get into this book. It picked up and I tried to figure out the mystery part. Got it part way and was happy that I hadn't guessed the entire plot. Quick read in a beautiful setting. Will recommend, thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

3.5⭐️ - the characters and plot were a bit uneven. There were parts that had me fully engaged, but other parts that I was a bit bored during, and some of the characters were frustrating.

Great book, it took me a bit to really get into but once I did, I ended up enjoying it. I usually enjoy books by this author so there was so surprise that I liked it. I would recommend this to others to enjoy.

3.5/5 stars! The premise of this story didn't sound especially unique, but it was intriguing enough for me to pick up the book. It was a pleasant surprise. The plot was pretty dang strong, following 4 friends on a hike through Norway. I enjoyed the twists in the story, but the ending kind of dumped the entire story. Would read something else by this author because of the strong story-building for the first 60% of the story.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The Hike by Lucy Clarke.

Every year four female friends unite for a vacation to relax, catch up, and escape the stresses of life. But this year, rather than sitting by the pool or in the spa, this year's chooser decides to hike through Norway, with a few protests from the other friends. But rather than a fun hike full of adventures, they get way more then they bargained for, especially when realizing that they may have crossed paths with the wrong people.

I really do love a book about female friendships, but I don't know if this is it. Without spoiling anything, there are just a few parts of the relationships that feel cliche and stereotypical to me, and not indicative of an intimate female friendship. The plot itself was also kind of messy, I felt lost a lot, just too much crammed in. Overall, this wasn't my cup of tea.

What a fun girls trip. I have loved every book by this author. The setting is so atmospheric and the character development is done so well. I loved the multiple pov as well.

“The Hike” is not your usual buddy road trip book, therefore the unexpected should be expected, not only from Mother Nature but from humankind. In this wilderness thriller, four long term female friends agree to challenge themselves with a Norwegian mountain hike rather than lounge at a resort on their annual getaway. Taking artistic license with the hiking trail, Clarke’s setting has appeal to readers who enjoy a walk in the forest, a stroll on the beach, an arduous climb, or all of the above. It was f necessary to entitle the chapters with the four main characters’ names as they are well developed with distinct personalities replete with secrets and hidden demons. Their strengths and weaknesses are revealed in the challenging events on their trek but fortitude and solidarity prevail.

The lingering question is if the novel needed the external criminal drama or could it have continued to shine with the innate drama that happens when four friends are together facing a physical challenge as it was the character development and relationships that truly made this thriller engaging.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance digital copy. All opinions are my own.

Book Review: The Hike by Lucy Clarke

4 friends embark on a yearly trip. Rather than going to a tropical island, sitting by the pool drinking cocktails, it’s Liz’s turn to pick and trip and she decides they will be hiking a steep and dangerous Norwegian mountain. Not all of them will not survive.

This thriller was intense. My heart was pounding as I was reading it, and Lucy Clarke is so great at tugging on all of your emotions, wondering if the character you were reading about was living their final moments. The book was written in multiple viewpoints with each chapter being about a different character. I don’t always care for multiple viewpoints, but it worked really well in this book. The book started off a little slow, introducing you to the characters, a few that were giving off creepy vibes to start you guessing on where they would come into play in the end and if any of them were capable of murder. I was wondering when the book was going to get to the intense parts, and was happy when it did because it came at you with a bang. I seriously can’t believe I was able to go to sleep after reading these chapters. When I tell you my heart was racing, I am not kidding! I don’t suggest picking this one up prior to a hike, but once you’ve finished your hike, it’s a great read 😉

The Hike focuses around a group of early-middle aged (depends on who you ask) women who met in high school but vacation together annually, with this year's trip being a multi-day difficult hike in Norway. Does the idea of four women with no training and ignoring all warnings seem plausible? No, but a book about prepared women doing a hike well and easy would be boring.

I loved the short chapters- it definitely made me feel like I was ripping through this book! The pace is slow at first but quickly picks up speed as the story progresses.

I will say there was a time jump that wasn't in your face at first. Which I imagine was meant to 'trick' the reader but it was almost obvious to me at the beginning, so to each their own.

There are also a LOT of characters in this book, between the four main characters and then all the people in the local town- it is a lot to keep track of. Of course as you meet the locals you realize "this isn't fluff, it has to circle back right?" it kind of feeds into the "larger" plot twist at the end. I enjoyed the dynamics of the friendship, four women that have closer ties with some more than others. It was relatable in the ways that you can often be mad at your friends but still do anything for them when push comes to shove.

With mysteries my usual complaint about books is the ending was ~too obvious~, especially if I can guess the ending chapters upon chapters before it plays out. This is not a complaint I have with this book, I was often putting the pieces together as the characters were. There was maybe extra stuff/drama added in for *what I don't know* but at least the ending wasn't obvious until well, it happened.

Although I gave this book three stars, I would recommend it to others.

With thanks to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Four women about my age complaining about life than the only non mother sacrifices herselfs for the moms. 🙄No thank you. Boring and redundant at times

4 women who have been friends since school head to Norway as the destination for their yearly get-together. Unlike their usual beach holidays, this year the plan is to spend 4 days hiking up to Blajfell and back. A part from Liz, no-one is really prepared for this hike. Everyone is hiding something. Liz a trial separation, Maggie, a failed marriage and a fear of leaving her daughter with her ex, Helena a pregnancy and Joni, addiction to alcohol and drugs. They become separated on the hike and keep bumping into mysterious/dangerous strangers. There's a woman who disappeared a year earlier. Many twists and suspense that keep you reading until the end. An enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book! It is set in Norway with four long-time friends coming together for their annual trip. All of their personalities are so different and we get to hear from all of them. The setting was beautiful and eerie and I found it hard to put this book down. All of the events and twists truly had me on edge. I would recommend this book for thriller lovers! Also, the audiobook was very well done and added a lot to the story for me.

I took one star off because SPOILER ALERT:

Why did Joni get all of the flack for the cheating but the cheating husband got off easy? This part of the story really irritated me. I absolutely hate cheating partners and hate reading about it in books. I was mad at Joni and the husband but they seemed to only shame Joni for it.
