I was absolutely hooked to this story. The main character loses her mom to a fire and decides to take revenge on the rich and stuck up girls who started it all. Hidden identities and additional mysteries are woven into a great beach mystery.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Shannon hatches a little plot to infiltrate the lives of the people responsible for her mother’s murder. By switching places with a girl who resembles her and knows the Harringtons, Shannon is able to get inside their inner circle much easier than she thought. A very compelling read that I really enjoyed, but I felt like the pace was a bit slow and the writing a tad stiff. The resolution of the book was a bit anti-climatic for me, however the ending wrapped up nicely.
This book was a perfect YA thriller/ mystery. It had secrets, twists, surprises and great villains who you loved to hate.
Lydia/ Shannon was a great main character and she was pretty likeable and you could relate to the reasoning behind what she was was doing.
I would recommend to anyone who likes reading about spoilt, arrogant teenagers getting their comeuppance.
I really enjoyed this novel as it speaks to the uber-rich and how dismissive of others some can be. Shannon "becomes" Lydia so the real Lydia can summer with her boyfriend, and the fake Lydia can get revenge on the family that is responsible for killing her mother. Many cringe-worthy moments as Shannon attempts to navigate the customs and affronts that are expected of her as a wealthy inhabitant of Fengari Island. Great pacing and dialogue; I raced through this one as I couldn't stop reading!
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
It was a great story and idea, but that ending was rushed and just fell flat. I understand that you need 100 characters to complete the review so I will add more. This book could have a bit more high drama in it. There were some fantastic scenes in it, but way too much about the burned-out house with not enough back story to it and a big lead-up about a stone creature, but nothing came to fruition about it. It was just thrown in there at one point, like, "yeah, it was found in the gardener's room" Why did you even mention it then? Also, what about the housekeeper did she get her comeuppance? It turns out she was the culprit all along with the fire you just let that dangle in the wind. yeah, that ending sucked.
I was disappointed with this book.
It was so slow and never picked up steam. I finished it, but it felt like a lot of work.
This YA thriller, with it's heavy nods to the late-2000s TV show 'Revenge' and all the stories that inspired, is perfectly serviceable and and a good enough time, but for me it didn't really stand out in the revenge-against-elite-rich-kids/adults sub-sub genre that's become so commonplace in the last few years.
