Thank you to Netgally, the publishers, and Adele Jordan
When I requested this book I was unaware that it was apart of a series, one that requires you to read the previous books for this one to make sense. I am unable to read all the previous books along with this one before the publish date. Therefore, I will rate this a fair 3/5 stars and will adjust the rating and review when I am able to read all the books in the series along with this one.
When I started reading this, I did realise I've read one of this author's books before
and had liked it tremendously.
Walsingham is a spy master with a network of intelligencers working under his control.
Kit is one of the more unusual finds, a woman working as a spy in the Elizabethan reign,
was rare enough. One with utmost loyalty to the Queen, with a price on her head from
the court of Mary, Queen of the Scots was an accolade that Kit did not want.
Now Kit has got a personal assignment from Elizabeth, to her cousin Mary a prisoner
on a remote castle bypaSsing Walsingham much to his dismay. Kit has a personal assignation,
which she does not intend divulging. To find Iohmhar who has been her personal partner,
now gone silent for a year. Kit does not believehe is dead, goes to his own home to unravel
whatever clues she can, and to strew false clues because she knows she is followed by spies
and enemies right from the moment she leaves London.
The adventures are brutal and many. thwarted at every turn, her assailants are frustrated
until she arrives at the Court of Mary who hands over the trusting Kit to Kit's worst
enemy Lord Ruskin who has a personal vendetta of his own.
Fast paced and interesting reading in various settings from rural, primitive and grand
this is a well set out story of historical fiction.
Kit has been raised by the Queen of England's spy master and while she has been trained to become a great spy she doesn't really understand what friendship and love is as she has had neither for most of her life. Four books into the series Kit is finally starting to question if her guardian is really doing what's best for her. She goes a little rogue in this installment to search for Iomhar who she now considers her best friend and he has been missing for a year now after he was sent on a mission. I enjoyed the story and I hope Kit finally comes to realize what's in her heart. There are still so many questions to answer and the slowest burn romance (if you would even call it that, well I'm hoping it is what it turns into) and I am looking forward to the next book!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Review in progress and to come.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
I appreciate the publisher allowing me to read this book. I really enjoyed reading it the plot was interesting and the characters made me want to know more about them. I highly recommend.
The Lost Highlander is the fourth Kit Scarlett Tudor mystery by Adele Jordan. Released 17th Mar. 2023 by Sapere Books, it's 276 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free. The other books in the series (now up to 4 books, with a fifth due out in June 2023), are also currently available on KU.
This is a spy/espionage thriller set in the late Elizabethan period. Political machinations and currying favor in the court of the queen can cause dangerous, even deadly, fallout. One of the more valuable and competent operatives in the employ of untrustworthy spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham is an intelligent and capable female protege called Kit Scarlett. Kit is sent on a mission to deliver a missive and investigate the possible involvement of the allies of Mary Queen of Scots in the mounting attempts on the life of aging Queen Elizabeth. At the same time, Kit's partner hasn't returned from his last mission and has been MIA for a year. It's another well written installment to this excellent historical series.
The author is quite capable, and the characters are three dimensional and believable. Although part of a series, necessary backstory is written into the story, so it works well enough as a standalone. The dialogue (of necessity) is written to be entirely accessible to modern readers, and happily the author has managed to avoid glaring modern anachronisms. The adventure is engagingly well written around a framework of actual people and events from the period. It's skillfully interwoven and not always easy to see where real history shades into fiction.
Four and a half stars. With 4 books extant currently and a fifth due out soon, this would be a great choice for a series binge/buddy read. Fans of Ariana Franklin, Andrew Swanston, and SJ Parris will find a lot to enjoy here. I'm not entirely sure about the distribution availability for library use, but this is an exceptionally well researched and credible historical series and would be an excellent choice for public library acquisition, if available.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Being familiar with the authors work, this was always a book that would be picked up on the back of her name and as expected, it was an enjoyable read.
Perhaps the main character is a kind of Wonder Woman from a bygone age, but the storyline is certainly not far fetched, nor will hopefully future episodes.
Look forward to more.
I've enjoyed this series very much, and I looked forward to this installment. It wasn't disappointing! The action is fast-paced and the characters are enjoyable. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
This series continues to delight and excite, and this time we have an additional riddle and enigma to solve, who is the real Kit Scarlett?
The story starts in Greenwich, 1586, Queen Elizabeth is still being threatened by assassins, who want her Scottish and Catholic cousin, Mary Stuart on the throne of England. Kit is an intelligencer in the employment of Sir Francis Walsingham, and has come to the notice of the Queen, who gives her a secret task. Kit is to travel to Chartley Castle in Staffordshire, where her cousin is imprisoned, and deliver a private message to Mary. There must be peace between the two cousins if Elizabeth is to feel free of assassination attempts, this letter is a last ditch attempt to appeal to their previous friendship.
Kit also has an ulterior motive, her fellow intelligencer, Iomhar, has disappeared and nothing has been heard from him for over a year. Kit agrees to deliver the letter, via Scotland, something Sir Francis doesn’t need to know about!
Kit sets off, but a spy informs old enemies that she is on the road, Kit finds safety in the comfort of strangers, and she realises how little love and affection she has received in her life.
When Iohmar’s mother, Moira, Dowager Lady Ross, first sees Kit, she is taken aback by her likeness to someone, and this same reaction is shown when Kit meets Mary Stuart, this is the better mystery in my opinion, Kit was brought up by Sir Francis, and has no memories of her parents or childhood. Who is Kit, what connection can there be between Royalty and an abandoned child?
We know that 1587 will have long lasting repercussions for Elizabeth and Mary, and I hope for many scintillating details to be revealed in the next book! I love this series and always want the next one now!!
My thanks go to Netgalley and the publishers, Sapere Books for my advance digital copy, freely given in exchange for my honest review.
A five star read indeed. I will leave reviews to Goodreads and Amazon UK.
Another riveting addition to a very accomplished series starring Kit Scarlett and the dangerous world of Queen Elizabeth's genial spymaster Walsingham.
From the daring rescue of Kit's partner Ihomar in Scotland to her heated confrontation with a hysterical Mary Stuart held in captivity in England, this adrenaline-fueled fictional journey kept me enthralled from start to finish!
A twisty tale of political shenanigans around the throne of the last Tudor full of violent deeds, murderous rages, a brilliantly plotted tapestry endowed with lots of cinematic qualities and blessed with a terrific cast of exquisitely drawn characters that relentlessly know how to keep you on the edge of your seat!
I simply love this wonderful series!
Highly recommended and to be enjoyed without any moderation whatsoever!
Many thanks to Sapere Books and Netgalley for this great ARC!
I am a long time fan of the Kit Scarlett mysteries and they just keep getting better and better. Whenever I’m finished with them, I’m always left thinking ‘another!’. I either want to continue reading or go back to a previous one in the series as I never feel ready to leave.
They’re such effortless, easy books. I love having a series that I know just every single book will be enjoyable and it’s the reason I look forward to every one. I’m so glad there is going to be a book 5!
I always think they can’t get any better but this one may have been my favourite. It was super entertaining and made the hours disappear as I was reading. I always enjoy being back with Kit, she’s an instantly lovable character that leaves you rooting for her in every way.
This time, Iomhar is missing in action. Its been a year since he disappeared in his mysterious mission and Kit can no longer sit idly by. When a fortuitous mission gives her the opportunity to investigate Iomhar’s last seen whereabouts, she embarks on a quest to find him and bring him home to his family. All whilst side stepping inconvenient assassination attempts and trying to deliver a message to the once queen, Mary Stuart.
Also you don’t need to have read the other books in the series to enjoy this one, I recommend you diving in and then going to read the others because this series is just epic. I can’t wait for my next adventure with Kit!
This novel starts with an attempted assassination of Queen Elizabeth I and then keeps up the action and the suspense all the way. The author weaves historical research in lightly, instead of in great chunks like some authors do, it is part of the background and works best that way. Kit Scarlett is in fine fettle throughout. Altogether a brilliant read and recommended highly.
