This is a book about camping, mainly Sole travellers. There is lot to learn for beginners from various campers who shared their crisis management experiences about what to do and what to carry along, while camping.
I really enjoyed being the reader of this adventure guide-manual. For me the best was 'Weekend Campers' because this is what I can relate most considering my current job. There are many places that have been shared experience about, if wanna travel there. Though my most favorites were of star-gazing and forest-dwelling camps.
Few of my favorite columns among given were:
--> Wilderness is a necessity - AMY KATHRYN
--> Always at home in a rucksack - ABBIE MATTHEWS
--> Thriving in a cabin down by the river - CAITLIN TIMBER
--> Ambitious couple chasing dreams of full-time travel {WHERE’S MY TENT} - Daria Shamanaieva and Mike
--> Breaking boundaries and contributing to a better world - TIMA DERYAN
--> Rise to the challenge - RUNE
--> Hitchhiking across India - JAYDEEP DEVAKATE
However, I do not like the concept of hiking with children unless they are young enough to understand the surrounding and able to grasp the purpose for why they have been taken along. Also, safety becomes vunerable once you leave home with Kinders.
There are some guiding quotes worth keeping in mind and some worth realising the essence of camping under the surveillance of Mother Nature.
‘Camping and hitchhiking in India is
incredibly easy. People are so helpful and
often offered me a place to sleep and a meal
at their table. You can also get free food and
accommodation at some Hindu ashrams
located on your travels.’ - JAYDEEP DEVAKATE
‘The key to a safe night on
the hills is to be aware of
your surroundings. Research
your locations thoroughly,
study your trails and always
carry a map and compass
for when your phone signal
fails you. - ABBIE MATTHEWS
‘It is important to have the
courage to give up camping
in bad weather. You’re not
being a failure; you’re simply
being smart.’ - YUUCA CAMP
‘Make life as simple as
possible – everything
takes time when you are
out in nature, so think
about what you want to
achieve that day and
prioritize your energy
accordingly.’ - DENNIS
‘Always prepare for the worst
outcome. It might mean carrying a
couple more kilograms in your pack,
but the weather is so unpredictable
that it doesn’t pay to chance it.’ - Dougie and Josh
‘I know it might seem
tough to leave your job
behind, but it’s important
to switch off often so you
don’t burn out. Leave your
job at the door; it’ll still be
there when you get back
on Monday morning.’ - RYAN FARMERY
‘Don’t walk before you can
run. Respect nature and
don’t take on more than
you feel comfortable on
your first outing.’ - Daria Shamanaieva and Mike
‘Enjoy all the unexpected
moments. Sometimes things
can threaten to ruin your
mood, but embrace all the
nuances of the journey and
learn from every positive
and negative.’ - AMIRA
‘You’ll waste so many
weekends trying to get
your schedule to line up
with everyone else’s or
there will be trips you want
to take that your friends
aren’t interested in. If you
want to get out camping,
then get out yourself!’ - MIKAELA FERGUSON
Overall, it was so fun to read this and getting amazed with the facts one need to know before leaving home for camping or hiking. I really loved this book/guide/manual, whatever one wanna consider it but it was very handy and worth keeping all the time remind yourself of the essentials mentioned here.
Thanks for the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a great read! Each chapter had various authors that told what they do along with giving helpful tips. Each author gave 3 things they always take with them camping and 3 places around the world that would be good to camp. I like that each story lists where the people are from and what type of tent they use. The websites at the back were nice as well.
After reading Road Life, I knew I had to pick this one up. Tent Life shares the stories of people doing a variety of types of camping - living on the road full time, camping on the weekends, and doing extremely adventurous camping. From those who camp locally on the weekends to those that are canoe camping or Portaledge camping, we are able to capture the experiences of so many. As with Road Life, the photography is beautiful and guaranteed to tempt you to plan your next getaway.
A series of profiles of various individuals who spend extended periods living in tents, some more adventuresome than others. The profiles focus on what the individuals learned with respect to the camping life.
The book has a lot of photos, many of which are stunningly beautiful. It also gives each profiled individuals' list of three essential pieces of equipment. Many of these are rudimentary or repetitive, but sometimes something new and interesting cropped up. The book also offers recommendations for camping locales and some rudimentary information on camping and safety requirements.
The book is worth checking out, and if you're looking for a picturesque gift book for a camper, it'll be right up your alley.
True to its subtitle, this is a genuinely inspirational guide. I am a recent convert to camping and browsing through this beautiful book has given me a yearning to get back on the road. In each short chapter, a different traveller shares their experiences, gives useful tips and recommends the most beautiful places to visit. It is also a great catalogue of different tents, with pictures of specific models.
If you've been on this kind of adventure before, this book will bring back fond memories. If not, it may make you reconsider and better understand why it is worth suffering some minor inconveniences for the pleasure and sense of freedom of sleeping in the wild.
Thanks to the publisher, Quarto Publishing Group - White Lion, Frances Lincoln and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.
