Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book. This was a good book, however a little slow, and the conversations seemed a little unnatural. I did like it enough where I will try another of their books, just didn't seem as memorable
The Ex-Wife is a domestic, psychological thriller which is by far my favorite genre. This immediately caught my attention and I didn't want to stop reading. I liked the development of the characters and didnt feel anyone was lacking in development. I loved the dynamic between the new wife and ex-wife and only wished we had gotten to see more of their interactions. I will say I was a bit disappointed with the abruptness of the ending. I didn't feel fully satisfied with it and was left with some questions. I felt like the ending was a bit rushed and could have been expanded upon.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Alice is on trial for murdering her ex husband's new fiancee but is she guilty?
The Ex Wife is a tense psychological thriller and murder mystery set in Liverpool.
We begin at Alice's trial and are then transported back in time to show the relationships and tensions that existed between Alice, her ex Mark, their teenaged daughter Cassie and his new fiancee Norah.
Alice is heartbroken at the disintegration of her marriage but she is determined to keep things amicable with Mark for the sake of their daughter Cassie. Cassie is a typical teenager with an unsuitable boyfriend and lots of angst. Mark and Norah have their issues as the wedding approaches and they look into IVF.
The murder happens about halfway throught the book and then the police investigation begins. I liked the character of DI Belinda Day as she struggles to sort out the complicated strands of motive, means and opportunity.
There were so many twists and some left me slack-jawed in shock! I liked the mystery surrounding Norah's death and the police investigation but couldn't imagine who was responsible. The characters felt authentic, especially Alice so I wasn't sure if I could trust her innocence or not.
The Ex Wife is a tense and entertaining thriller and murder mystery with strong characters and an intriguing crime to solve.
This was an addictive thriller where I really didn't know what to think. The main character is accused of killing her ex husband's fiancee, and she certainly has a lot to hide, but I was back and forth on whether she did it. There are other side plots that also kick in and muddy the waters.
A gripping read that keeps you hooked from the very first page. An excellent read would recommend to anyone.
what an amazing book!
with lots of twists and turns the book tells the story of three women, well basically two women and a teenage girl, the ex-wife, the fiancé and the daughter. the story begins with the ex0wife in trial for the fiancé's murder. and then we go weeks back to see what actually had happened to them.
the story is gripping, characters are well developed and everything is just so good. definitely recommend this one to all the mystery lovers out there. so good!
thanks to NetGalley for Providing my copy of this book.
A page turner from start to finish, the authors flawlessly flit from past to present to build the narrative and set the mystery. There was one aspect of the plot twist that didn't quite fit for me, but it still caught me by surprise, and finished off with a thrilling ending
Divorced from husband Mark, Alice now lives in a modest home with her daughter Cassie. It's far from what she's used to. Mark meanwhile has moved on and is due to marry the beautiful Norah. When Alice finds herself in prison for the murder of the woman she envies, the story begins to unravel as we go back to where it all began.
Rigby and Ashby are definitely my favourite writing duo, their stories are exciting, fast paced and such addictive reading.
The characters are slippery and duplicitous, it's well plotted and it has more twists and turns than a roller-coaster, leading up to the sting in the tail.
Many thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for my tour spot.
Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐
There were so many twists and turns in this book, every time I felt convinced of how the story was going to pan out it swept the rug out from under me!
I felt so desperately sorry for Alice, trying to keep a home together, meet her deadlines at work and function as a mother while her ex-husband blissfully buggered off with a younger woman and booted her out of their family home.
This already made for an engaging read, but then once the new girlfriend dies things ramp up to a whole new level and the story unravels at an alarming rate.
This is a tense and exciting read and I heartily recommend it to fans of psychological thrillers.
Alice Hargraves is facing the charges of murdering her ex-husband’s fiancée Norah – Alice’s life was all perfect until Norah enters her life unexpectedly and that is when Alice’s husband Mark realizes he has been leading a mundane life with a wife who has no new aspirations.
After getting divorced Alice is finding it hard to work and maintain her life plus her daughter. Right when she thought Norah is all set to marry Mark, Alice learns that Norah and Mark are trying for a child and all the IVF treatments might reveal a secret about Cassie’s birth!
Alice wants to ensure that Norah doesn’t bring out the well-hidden secret.
Norah’s brother Felix employs Cassie ( Mark & alice’s daughter) and slowly learns about her boyfriend Scott.
Scott seems a bit too shady and has something to hide but no one knows what that is.
As the story unfolds in the current and the past, this was a well written book!
Thanks to Netgalley, Sally Rigby & Amanda Ashby, Boldwood books for the NG widget
This book was one hell of a thriller that took my breath away. It was a crazy ride and whoa that ending i still haven't got my head round it and we NEED a sequel., so many unanswered questions and it is no a book i will easily forget. I hadn't read anything by either of these authors but I would read more in a heartbeat. I love the writing, the complex characters and the twists and turns that constantly left you wondering about the characters next move and motives.
Hooked till last...............
The Ex Wife by Sally Rigby and Amanda Ashby brings to you a psychological thriller tale spun with mystery. At first, the plot picks up at a slow pace, but slowly and slowly the plot thickens. I was not very impressed with the characters as there was nothing new in them. But, the plot seemed very interesting as it paces further. Climax was right on point according to my expectation. It was a fun ride.
Definitely 4 stars for the book. Thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and Netgalley for providing me with an opportunity to be a part of the blog tour.
Her life was perfect until Nora came along and took it all but there is one thing that I won't allow her to take from me and that is my precious daughter Cassie. Wow! I'm lost for words with how cleverly written this plot and characterisation is. I loved it from the beginning and the twist after twist had my head spinning. Cassie was my favourite character as I think she was the only innocent one in it all. The adults are deceptive and sometimes selfish. The plot is one of the best I have ever read, it is twisty and complicated but it all wrapped up nicely in the end and made everything make sense. I'll definitely be reading more by these two authors.
This was a real page-turner that hooked me in from the first chapter and kept me fully engaged with its various twists and turns until the very end.
It’s written from multiple POVs (always a plus from me) and chapters from past and present combine to build the complete picture (another winner), I constantly flipped back and forth in my opinions of who killed Norah and what everyone’s hidden secrets were.
The writers did a great job of building suspense, dropping a little plot reveal and then taking the story in a completely different direction and making me doubt my previous theories 🤯
Alice really grated on me, no other word for it. She seemed to have a woe-is-me mentality the whole way through. I get it, heartbreak is awful. We’ve all been there. But do we all stalk our ex for the next two years? Yes, yes we do. But do we all set up camp in their garden shed and watch them going about their mundane daily business? Ok mayyyybe. But do we outright claim that it’s the new girl’s fault entirely that we’re squatting in that shed watching them cook dinner and we had no choice in our own actions? NO WE DON’T LADIES. Alice had her own secrets to protect, I understood that. But it just seemed exhausting carrying around that much anger and hostility for so long, even to the detriment of her own career. She was just plain unlikeable for me.
Despite the less-than-favourable characters (seriously, Slimy Scott should have been killed off in the first chapter, what a douche 🤣) I really enjoyed this book and will absolutely be looking out for more by these authors 🖤
Thank you @rachelsrandomresources and @bookandtonic for my copy of The Ex Wife 🙏🏻
Wowsers what an utterly chilling and spine tingling thriller. Just epic, awesome and down right amazing! can you tell I loved it?
Anyway on to the book. These ladies are excellent writers and make the perfect thriller writing combo. They’ve created a superb plot that just flows at the right pace. One minute you’re reading about a family and all the usual ups and downs of divorce, new step parent, teenage angst and a bitter ex wife. Alice was blindsided by husband wanting, for her a sudden divorce and now here he is about to marry his much younger and beautiful cliché wife to be Norah. Then Alice finds out they are trying for IVF and Alice loses the plot and begins to act in a very odd manner. Why is Alice so flustered by the news?
Every single character is wonderfully crafted with good bits and bad bits, like us all, which really makes them all believable and you start to think, “crikey there by the grace of God go I” How easy it would be to get caught up in the dreadful situation Alice finds herself. The pace picks up steadily and boy by the end you’re left reeling from the final reveal! Its truly outstanding and you never see it coming. Brilliant book that I urge everyone to read.
Alice is recently divorced and has a seventeen-year-old daughter and she is now on trial for murder; But she was successful, with a wealthy husband and a great career…. what happened?
This is a psychological thriller with a fast-paced narrative, twists you will not see coming and a book I could not put down. I flew through this novel; which had me tense throughout.
This novel has seven different characters and is told with two different timelines to view the past and present; this was a great way to lead the novel and keep the reader guessing throughout.
This is a novel I highly recommend and I shall be reading these authors again.
The Ex-Wife is a twisty - turny page turner of a story that I could not put down. I enjoyed the characters and it had an ending that I did not see coming - Fantastic!
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my ARC.
What a brilliant, twisting thriller this is. It’s a wonder I didn’t put my back out, I was turned in so many directions.
The book opens with Alice on trial for the murder of her ex-husband’s fiancée & her daughter’s boyfriend. In court, her air is one of acceptance & it appears that the only unknown is how long the prison sentence will be. We are then thrown to six months previously & shown the torturous route to present day.
I rarely read a book in a day, but this was one. I didn’t know who to believe or what clues to follow. Neither do the police.
A don’t blink you might miss something read, which makes for a fabulous standalone.
This was an enjoyable read with plenty of good twists and turns throughout. I liked the characters, the story itself was very well put together and the style of writing was perfect. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading this genre.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.
The Ex Wife is a domestic thriller that will definitely be in my top ten reads for 2023. Talk about having me in a complete head spin at times ! To be honest I found it a little bit slow to start but looking back that was perfect for this book. It’s a book that reels you in slowly and before you know it you’ll be completely hooked. This is the first book I’ve read by this duo of authors but it certainly will not be my last.
