I will not be reading this. I don't really have plans on supporting this author based off of the topics she writes about.
The book was absolutely perfect and it kept me reading until the sun rose. The characters were perfectly flawed and their situation was surprising.
Although this one gets mixed reviews, I think that it is well written with characters that are real. They are flawed but that is real life.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book, unfortunately I was unable to finish it.
In Hopeless, Holder tells Sky he “lives her”. He doesn’t quite love her… yet, but he more than just likes her. That is exactly how I feel about Hopeless, I didn’t love it but I more than liked it, so I live it.
I am completely blown away with all the reviews I have read for Hopeless and of course I love Colleen Hoover’s past works, Slammed and Point of Retreats, both books being my favorite books of all time. When I started reading Hopeless I was all set for this epic book, so maybe my expectations were just too high. Don’t get me wrong because it is a great book. Be warned, the book deals with heavy issues such as sexual child abuse and suicide.
In Hopeless you will meet 17 year-old Sky. I really, really LOVED Sky. She had problems that she didn’t even know she had to deal with but when came to face it; she was strong and dealt with her issues. She is such a unique character. Then there is Holder. Holder is one of the most amazing, smart, perfect, emotionally invested male book characters that I have EVER read. He is pretty amazing and the way he was with Sky and the things he said to her took my breath away. He seemed so much wiser than 18 years-old. Holder had issues of his own, mostly guilt for past events he feels he is to blame even when he was not. I just wanted to hug both Sky and Holder and take away their pain.
So why didn’t I love it? I felt some scenes in the book were a bit slow and boring at times. I loved the minor characters in Hopeless, like Six who is Sky’s best friend and Breckin, the “Mormon” she met her first day at public school. The book kind of forgets about these two and I missed them a lot. I love Sky and Six’s text messages and their fun conversations. I would have liked to have more of ending with them as I did with Sky and Holder. I was also finding myself comparing Hopeless to The Sea of Tranquility. They are very similar and I prefer TSOT. So that was more me for comparing the two books.
Hopeless is a unique and special book about coping with tragedy, making peace with the past and those who negatively affected your life, finding love, and letting that person in your life.
I give Hopeless 4 Stars.
