Gah I wanted to like this. The characters are just so unlikable and the freaking lies. The narrator was good it just wasn’t for me.
The husband is keeping secrets. The wife is keeping secrets. There are so many twists and turns in this fast-paced thriller. This was a fun audiobook to listen to on my daily walks.
This book was a let down. If the main character had been written as unreliable, I would have enjoyed it more. Instead, she was incredibly flaky and underdeveloped. I did not care about the secondary characters, found the plot to be so unrealistic it wasn't enjoyable and did not care about the twist at all. I do not recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free audio arc in exchange for my honest opinion. Unfortunately, this book was underwhelming and poorly executed. The opening scene caught my attention, but later it felt like this part of the plotline was incorporated in such a haphazard manner simply to not leave it hanging out to dry completely. I found the writing to be disorganized and choppy, making the plotline confusing when it was attempting to be clever and nonlinear. And the similar character names were so unnecessary! Ella-Emma-Tara? It's saving grace were the twists towards the end, which truthfully were pretty entertaining and added a star to my overall rating. This could have been a juicy and ridiculous popcorn thriller if done well, but for me it's a total pass.
Intriguing concept and idea. I love all the twists, but the story wasn't convincing enough. It lacked depth and clarity. There was literally no suspense. This was a fine, quick read/listen, but pretty predictable and not really memorable.
Another book that with just the blurb you know what happens. Ended up listening to about 30% of the book and it failed to capture me. I kept comparing it to a similar book. And where that other book's ending was a little predictable, the writing kept you coming back for more. This one just didn't do it.
Pretty classic domestic psychological thriller, fast paced story with decent characters. I really enjoyed the narrator.
Adele is a popular and highly sort after marriage counselor, with her parents having been household name counselors with their own tv show. When Adele opens the door to a police officer one day her carefully constructed life begins to crumble before her eyes. Adele’s husband Patrick is missing and as the search for him behind the secrets he has been keeping begin to be revealed. Adele’s reputation as a marriage counselor could be irrevocably damaged when news gets out of the state of her own marriage. When people linked to Adele and Patrick begin to turn up dead the race is on to uncover the secrets that are left and out a stop to the person behind the murders.
This is a psychological domestic thriller. I’m on the fence about this one as there were parts that I really enjoyed and others that were frustrating. I enjoyed the mystery of Adele’s husbands disappearance and the layers of his secrets and how they all were uncovered with his disappearance. I think there were too many side characters and they felt undeveloped and I felt their reactions or behaviour in situations weren’t really properly explained or explored. It was well paced with a few twists at the end. Some of the twists weren’t necessary and felt they were added just to have another twist. Overall it was a quick read, that kept me interested throughout as I was keen to see the outcome.
Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"The Marriage Counselor" by Dea Poirier is a domestic psychological thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. While the story leaned towards the dramatic side, it managed to hold my attention with its rollercoaster of suspense and unexpected twists. Readers who enjoy "over-the-top" thrillers and are willing to suspend disbelief will likely find themselves captivated by this curvy mystery.
The premise centers around a marriage counselor whose world is turned upside down when her husband suddenly disappears. As she delves into the mystery surrounding his disappearance, she unravels layer after layer of secrets that he has kept from her. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Poirier introduces new twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end.
What I appreciated about "The Marriage Counselor" is its ability to deliver an entertaining and engrossing reading experience. The author skillfully crafts a suspenseful atmosphere that grabs hold of your attention and doesn't let go. The pacing is well-executed, with a constant sense of urgency that keeps you flipping through the pages, eager to uncover the truth alongside the protagonist.
I must also commend the engaging performance of the audiobook version, which I had the pleasure of experiencing through an advanced copy from NetGalley. The narrator's delivery amplified the tension and suspense, making it even more difficult to put the story on pause. I found myself staying up into the late hours, unable to resist the urge to continue listening.
In conclusion, "The Marriage Counselor" offers a thrilling and unpredictable ride for fans of domestic psychological thrillers. Although it leans towards the dramatic side, its ability to keep you invested in the story certainly makes up for it. I highly recommend this book to readers who appreciate a suspenseful and twist-filled tale that will keep them guessing until the very end.
This one just wasn’t for me I wasn’t a fan of the main character or the side characters at all, it felt confusing at times and just hard to follow
This was OK. I did not find it particularly gripping. I am in a similar role to the main character and found her practise questionable at times. I did not find that I connected to any of the characters, and wished to skip ahead to the ending, which by the time I got to it, I did not find it particularly shocking or surprising.
There was a lot going on in The Marriage Counselor. Tons of dead bodies, shady individuals, and so much deception, it was hard to keep track. I was very grateful to have the opportunity to listen to the audiobook. This might’ve been a DNF if I would have consumed it by print. I never really connected to the main character. Some of the other characters seemed very similar and were hard to tell apart. I’m not saying this was a bad thriller necessarily, it just wasn’t for me. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
Amazing book ! I recommend 10000% . The characters are well develop and plot of the book is unique . You will never guess . Keep you reading all day
This book was a fast easy read. I found it predictable. I know there are several good reviews for this book but it was not for me.
Thank you NetGalley for the free copy. This genre has always been my favourite and this is another very good goo read. Some if the plots I could guess but there were still some good twists,
The Marriage Counsellor is a psychological thriller full of twists. Adele’s husband has gone missing and as the police investigate, it seems she didn’t know the man she’d been married to for seven years at all.
I found this book far fetched and completely unbelievably. The plot and characters were flimsy and the narrator didn’t add anything for me either.

This book started so well, but after a while it was all over the place.
It was quite predictable and unrealistic.
I just feel it should have been better based on the premise.
Good thing is, I just didn't see the ending coming. It's what made my time not feel wasted.
Thank you Bookouture Audio& NetGalley for this ALC.
A suspense thriller starting off quite a normal day, when someone goes missing without a trace, taking with him cash and company assets. Another complication is the investigating officer who has previously been in a relationship with the missing mans wife.twists and turns, bit far fetched for me and i lost interest at times. Thank you #NetGalley for the audiobook to review.
I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. It wasn’t the best thriller I’ve ever read but it was good enough to make me want to listen and see what comes next. I guessed the ending a bit early on, but luckily I was totally off so it was a surprise.
Thank you NetGalley for the arc audiobook.
In this book it will keep you on the edge of your seat through every twist and turn. If you want a book that is a quick read and that will give you a wild ride,,,, pick up this one.
