I have to admit; I guessed nothing right in this book. I really was fooled. Adele, a marriage counselor, receives a visit one day from her ex, who is also a cop. They are doing a welfare check on her current husband. She finds out that his job doesn't know she exists. She finds out he was cheating, lying, stealing money, etc. All the things you would be horrified to know your ex was involved in. But where is he? Did he run away? Did someone get revenge on him? Who will end up dead? Great book! Shocks like crazy in this book!
Marriage counselor, Adele's, husband goes missing. As details begin to come out, she wonders how she missed all the signs? It's her job to deal with marriage issues, yet she missed the red flags in her own.
Years ago her parents, who were television marriage counselors (I'm picturing a Dr. Phil like show) were killed in a car accident. Things also being to come out about that.
Adele is forced to close down her practice for a bit. One of the police officers is her high school sweetheart. She begins a bit of digging on her own. And sparks also fly a bit with her old flame.
I can't really give more info or I will spoil the book. Just know, if you love a wild ride of a story with so many twists and turns you have whiplash, the one is for you!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
The Marriage Counselor had me hooked from the beginning. I loved the characters, and I did not see the ending coming. I will read this author again.
When Adele finds out her husband Patrick is missing. Then she is shocked to find out he has been having affairs. Next a women he has been seeing is dead. Of course she would be the prime suspect. The strangest part is all his coworkers never knew he was married.
She is a professional! How could she have known about her husband! As she starts to unravel her life Cameron comes into her life and helps Adele.
This novel is full of many twists, lies and unexpected scenarios which makes it so juicy. Is it possible Adele knows more than she is revealing? Did she know about his true identity? This was my first book by this author and I will be looking for more.
I love Dea Poirier as an author and I previously read and enjoyed her Carlerwood cases series which I also very much recommend.
The tittle "The Marriage Counselor" intrigues me very much as very good friends of mine used their services before (without much success sadly) and a fellow school governor was also a professional marriage counselor.
The book is written from the counselor's POV Adele and it was the right way about it as it immerges you totally in the storyline.
Really good and believable plotline: a marriage counselor finding out after the mysterious disappearance of her husband that her own marriage is not was she believed it was. I really enjoyed this storyline with much humour when relating the counselling aspect of her work. The mystery plot thickens more and more through the book to the point the only thing you know is that nothing is ever what it seems.
The finale is splendid and I was delighted with myself that I saw it coming... Really really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.
The narration aspect is really well performed by Stephanie Cannon who adds life to the book :)
Firstly I would like to thank Bookoture Audio and the author Dea Poirier for access to the marriage counselor.
The review I am going to make is an honest review regardless of the access I received for this book. It should be noted I was not paid for this review and ensure honesty in all my reviews.
The audio book was very easy to listen to about a marriage counselor who’s husband has gone missing. But weirdly as the police are involved you learn people in her husbands life, like his co-workers do not know he is married but what is the truth!
The ending of this audiobook I still had unanswered questions but the storyline did keep pace throughout and kept me engaged.
The audiobook is well narrated, with a likeable and easy to listen to narrator who had no difficulty maintaining my attention.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. This was a creative and absorbing tale! Definitely recommend this one!
The Marriage Counsellor by Dea Poirier is the story of Adele, a woman destined to follow in her famous or should that be infamous dead parents footsteps. The book opens with a visit from the police following the reporting by her husband’s workplace of his missing status. A workplace that didn’t know his wife even existed. A that’s just the beginning of the lies and deceit. Some of which you’ll spot immediately due to the tagline in the front cover - a big mistake in my opinion. So where is he, is he still alive and who knows the truth. I loved this book, great twists and turns and a fantastic ending, but please, please, please lose the tagline about not trusting the titular character and the shocks would have more impact I’m sure. This had the potential to be a 5 star had it not been for the giveaway. I’m awarding it 3 stars, as the reader I felt one step ahead of the twists directly involving Adele.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture Audio and Dea Poirier for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
Can you imagine being married, and your husband’s employer doesn’t even know you exist!? Crazy right! Well that’s where our MC finds herself after finding out her husband has gone missing….and this is just the beginning of the whirlwind of secrets.
Why has he lied? Where has he gone!? The first chapter will have you engaged and ready to deep dive into figuring out what has happened. In true thriller fashion, every time I thought I knew what was happening something would prove me wrong. The storyline moved at the perfect pace and didn't have any slow moments. I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The ending left me with two questions but definitely gave me chills!!
Great mystery, highlighted by the excellent narration!
Great story telling, unexpected mystery, & captivating plot.
Excellent audio narration.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.
What the hell have i just read/listened to.
This book has more twists than a big twisty thing. What a great, suspenseful read this was. The Narrator has just the right balance of changes in voice, adding to the suspense the whole way through. The Narrator has done an amazing job on this book.
The author has pulled off a cracker of a book. New author to me, Dee Poirier is certainly an author I will look out for in the future.
I was gripped from early on in this book, It starts off strong and continues the whole way through.
Adele is a marriage councilor, but one that hasn't realized she has issues with her own marriage. Is it too late when she discovers what problems she has. When her husband vanishes Adele is helped by her ex boyfriend who just happens to be the local cop.
Secrets are unraveled the whole way through this book and twists a plenty. I have to say the ending really did take me by surprise.
The Marriage Counselor by Dea Poirier starts off strong and pulls the reader in immediately. I started noticing editing inconsistencies that were very distracting and other things I found to be illogical, but by the end (mostly) made sense. The book does have some twists that I didn't guess and one that I did because it was the only logical explanation. I did like the ending but also felt like there were a few things left unexplained in regard to other characters.
Stephanie Cannon uses a distinct voice for most characters, which I appreciate. She also seems to embody Adele, making the story more entertaining.
Overall, I rate The Marriage Counselor 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio for providing me with an ALC.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this audio. What a rollercoaster of a story.
Adele helps couples conquer their marriage problems everyday. But is she too focused on helping others to see the problem in her own marriage? Her husband vanishes and Adele is left to figure it out with ex-boyfriend cop Cameron. The further they get into the investigation, the more of her own secrets come to light.
This was a very busy read with many dynamic characters and things going on. The twists were unexpected and it was an entertaining listen. I would recommend it to fellow readers.
It was so good in the start. I was hooked, I really wanted to know what happened. The missing husband and te solid marriage fallen apart. And some victims connected to the husband. And all was done in the name of love. Oh well there is a twist at the end maybe not all expected. An pop-corn entertaining thriler. Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for the opportunity.
Adele is the perfect breadwinning wife. Patrick seems like the most amazing husband. Together they seem like the perfect married couple. Until one day Adele receives the worst news that will derail her life for good. Patrick has gone missing in the most mysterious way. In order to find her husband she must dig into his past and secrets to find out where he went. How far will she go before her own secrets come out of the dark?
I normally don't read thrillers books, but this had a really good start to it . It hooked me in right away with questions that made me want more. This book has a very strong beginning and middle that made me want more. As the book went on there were sadly some plot holes that made me confused. I felt at times the suspense and the twists and turns were rushed to keep the book nice and short. I did not connect with the characters as much as I wanted to. I felt like I did not know what made them tick or why they were the way they were. I feel like the romance between Adele and Cameron was different from what a normal romance was. I feel like Cameron was definitely awkward when it came to Adele and I thought it was cute. I wanted to know the history between them but I was robbed of that. Cameron definitely had some major red flags and if wish that Adele could see that.
Emma was a strange creature for sure, I did not know whose side she was or if she was a good or bad guy> i like that it kept me guessing when it came to her. She did seem a bit rude and self absorbed. I do not know if that was the intent though.
All in all this was a great book. It really cleansed my pallet and it was a fast read. I wish the book was a lot longer then it was and that the ending was not that rushed. The narrator was fabulous.
Thank you netgalley for this Arc.
Okay...but...okay...WOW! This was a rollercoaster for sure.
Adele and Patrick have a marriage, not a good one though apparently. This story has so many moving parts and I still think there were some ends not tied up. Like did I miss the answers to some of my questions or were they not there. I'm not sure. If you like murder mysteries with twists and turns then you'll enjoy this one.
When marriage counselor Adele's husband goes missing, the police unravel many secrets that he was keeping from her. Who was this man? And how did she not see any of these signs?
Holy smokes, this book was so entertaining! The audio was excellent - I was hooked from the first page. There were so many twists and just when I thought it was clear cut, we were hit with that ending! If you like unputdownable thrillers, this one needs to be on your list. I'm looking forward to exploring this author's backlist now.
This book is excellent!!! The twists are sharp and you’ll never guess the ending! This is a great book. It’s another thriller that you won’t be able to put down.
This is a quick and entertaining read. It captures your attention right away and holds it all the way through. I might’ve gone into it with too high of hopes because it sounded promising, but fell flat for me. If you’re a seasoned psychology thriller reader, you’ll be able to figure this one out every step of the way. The last twist was expected (which would have been fine), but it felt rushed and then you’re left confused about who was actually guilty of what.
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I got approved for this today and listened to it all day!
Great thriller that left me wondering what was going to happen next the entire time. Lots of surprises and twists. Really great listen.
Narrator did a great job throughout as well.
