A fast paced thriller with twists you never see coming, this is so unique and I've never read a thriller you can read again immediately and still be left shocked with the things you discover. There's a lot of detail in this with each character having little secrets you wouldn't guess and can only see a second time around. There was parts were I felt it got repetitive (towards the middle) and dragged slightly but overall this was a good listen with a good narrator.

Well this book really threw me for a loop! The twists that are intertwined inside just keep you guessing until the very end. And let me tell you, that ending made the entire book worth it. Because most of the time I couldn’t find a reason to like any of the characters within. But the storyline and ending mad up for that fact.

I definitely think a reread is appropriate after finishing the book knowing how it ends!

Overall I give this book 4 stars. The narrator did a great job and I really liked the story.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishing house, the narrator and the author for the opportunity to listen to a complimentary advance reader copy of this book in return for a review based upon my opinion.

Adele gets a disturbing visit from a familiar face, Cameron, a police officer who is also an old boyfriend. He is inquiring about Patrick, she says that he is her husband and he stated that he has been declared missing by his workplace. She asks why they didn’t call her first and Cameron says that Patrick’s workplace didn’t know he was married. From this point on, Adele realizes how little she knew about her husband of seven years. Adele as it turns out, may not be as innocent as she appears as the bodies start to pile up. The ending was a bit of a surprise but truly, I’m not sure who all killed who. Lol

I liked the narrator a lot, she had good tone and pace, she had a great inflection of feelings. I would definitely listen to her again.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I would definitely check out another book.

Adele is a Marriage Counsellor who helps her clients save their marriages and gives them her professional advice on how to have a healthy and happy marriage. So when she receives a visit from the local police telling her that he husband is missing, she grows concerned. Not only that but Patrick was reported missing by his employer and they contact the police instead of Adele directly because no one even knew that Patrick was married. He didn't show up; to work after his vacation from work but Adele didn't know Patrick was on vacation at all as he left every morning to "leave for work" and said goodbye to Adele......what was going on and what is with all the secrets.

Adele is frantically trying to find out what has happened with Patrick when she receives news that her late famous TV personality parents may have been doing some shady things in the past as well.

This is my first book by Dea Poirier and I did enjoy it and would recommend this quick read. Enjoy!!!!

This book started out reminding me of another book, but then this one took you on a wild ride.

For me, there was almost too many things to keep track of, and the sub-plot seemed to take away from the main plot for me. I also felt like there was a lack of information and it was suddenly like “this happened and then this happened” with no real explanation for HOW or WHY. The whole story left gaps and ended up way too fast for me and left me with one too many questions.

However, the narrator did a good job, especially with different inflections for different characters. The book was easy to listen to as well.

Thank you to Net Galley for letting me listen to this ARC of The Marriage Counsellor!

This was an intriguing thriller but unfortunately I knew who the "bad guy"was almost from the beginning and that took away from it for me.

I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. This is my honest review

3ish stars

This one was just okay. The initial premise had a lot of promise, but I didn’t like the actual story as much as I thought I would. Only about a week later, most of the details have already escaped me, so the story definitely didn’t stick. It wasn’t bad, just not super memorable for me.

There is so much going on in this book, which I think lends to the entertainment value, but also left some unanswered questions. I did enjoy the book and overall story. and loved that I kept being surprised at many different points in the story. However, with so many different plot twists, there were some unanswered questions, or areas of the book in which I felt like I may have missed a key component to understanding the reason this particular thing was happening in the story. Overall, I did really enjoy the book, and would definitely recommend to readers who want a lot of twists and turns in their suspense/mystery reads!

What in the world of messed up people kind of book did I just listen to? Psychological Thriller is correct.

I need to digest this a little longer. And find someone to discuss it with...

Available the 4/23.

Thanks, Netgalley and Bookouture, for my audio ARC.

Why? Just why? This was one of the most confusing books I've ever read. I've never read a suspense thriller that ends with confusion over who the murderer is and why anyone was even murdered. I was even confused over the interactions between MC Adele and her assistant Emma. Emma was extremely hostile towards Adele.
Why???? It never clears up the mechanics of their relationship. All these people in Adele's life end up dead without a real explanation of why. And 2 characters actually take responsibility for the death of one of the victims. So who was it??? Beyond frustrated by this book with a plot that sucked me in. In the beginning I couldn’t put this book down. It had so much potential and went nowhere. Maybe another book by this author

Title: The Marriage Counselor
Author: Dea Poirier
Narrator: Stephanie Cannon
Pub Date: April 24, 2023
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📚Synopsis:
✨Adele is a marriage counselor following in the footsteps of her well known parents who once had a popular TV show famous for hashing out marital conflict. Her parents were killed in a car accident when she was 13 leaving her a large trust fund. Determined to make it on her own, Adele has refused to use her trust fund and has built, what she believes to be, a successful life seeing patients in the home she shares with Patrick, whom she’s been happily married to for the past 8 years. Because of the success she’s found, she finds it difficult to process the words the police officer, and former boyfriend, says to her on her doorstep “Adele, we believe your husband is missing.” Having not shown up to work after his two week vacation, Patricks’s work colleagues reach out to law enforcement. They reached out to the police first because as far as they knew, Patrick wasn’t married. Patrick’s “two week vacation” doesn’t make sense to Adele because Patrick has been going to work every day, like normal; at least as far as she was knew, he was going to work.
Within days, rumors about her deceased parents hit the news with people claiming her parents paid off former guests when their marital conflict aired on live TV backfired in real life. Next, a former business partner of her husband comes to her home demanding money. Then women associated with Adele and her missing husband end up dead which is not making things look good for either of them. Add in the additional mystery of large sums of money missing from their joint bank account, along with a bag of baby clothes found in their home, Adele is determined to find answers. In this cat and mouse game of deceit it quickly becomes clear the cat may in fact become the mouse.

📚Thoughts/Recommendations:
✨I was immediately hooked with this book and it was a thrilling, engaging, and wild ride from start to finish. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys thrillers with a crazy twist! This is perfect for readers from the likes of Lisa Jewell and Ruth Ware to Freida McFadden and Lucinda Berry. I’m hopeful to find other mind blowing novels from the author!

A definite thriller with an unpredictable ending. Did find that there were a lot of different murders/ betrayals/storylines going on all at the same time, making it difficult to follow at various points. Overall it was an interesting story.

The marriage counselor - audiobook

3⭐️

The book starts right away. Adele her husband is missing. She is a marriage counselor who followed in the footsteps of her famous parents. Her husband was keeping many secrets from her. It’s like she did not know him. Was he the only one keeping secrets or is she just as mysterious? Wel this book has a lot of murder. Be ready and prepared. Lots of plot twists and who dunits. Non of the characters are reliable even our main character Adele. I did not really like that. At the very very very end we have a major plot twist that I did not see coming. A successful thriller where you don’t know who did it till the very end! Thank you to @netgalley for allowing me to read this book!!

This one had the potential to be really good, but it fell a little short for me. The storyline was a little predictable, and the main character was insufferable, and hard to connect with. A little out there and unbelievable. Not terrible, but also not what I want in a thriller.

This audiobook kept me guessing until the very end, the absolutely insane twists that I never saw coming were very well executed! The narration was fantastic, I felt like I was in the story myself!

I received this one in audiobook form The Marriage Counselor. I am pretty picky when it comes to narrators and I did enjoy this one. The book itself starts out sucking you into the storyline pretty quickly which is great. It does twist and turn as it goes through as it brings the backstory and the current storyline together. It is about a therapist whose own husband goes missing. As she looks into it she discovered his secrets he was hiding from her. It is a mix of worrying about her own credibility as a marriage counselor and finding out what she can about the man she has been married to for 7 years. Her life is then potentially in danger and she is being protected by an old flame who happens to be a police officer and still pining over her. There are a few things about this book that do confuse me for instance her assistant is a horrible mean spirited person so why would she put up with that? But it does all come together. I enjoyed the storyline and the build up into the twists but I do think the ending was rushed at the very end and to me it was a surprise but also didn't make sense. I did overall like this book though and I thought there was a lot of interesting events going on.

The Marriage Counselor by: Dea Poirier is a fast paced, modern, whodunit that all but gave me whiplash (in a good way) from all the back and forward speculation I was feeling about each and every character.

Immediately we are presented with a scorned wife and a missing husband. Recipe for disaster.

Adele is a marriage counselor with a linage that puts her in the spotlight after her husband doesn't show up for work, bringing her credibility as a counselor and a person into question. While all of this sounds jarring for the average person, Adele uses a lot of her professional skills to good use by rationalizing through the situation.

When a boyfriend from her passed ends up being one of the head cops on the investigation, Adele uses him to syphon information from as well as find comfort and protection in their relationship. She finds herself needing to "play the part" more than actually feeling the pain of her impending loss, as more and more evidence presents itself to the dealings of her husband. Adele finds herself believing that if he isn't already dead, she would like to kill him herself.

Adele as a character was extremely unlikeable in my opinion, but ultimately her cold nature plays completely into the plot, and for that reason it was tolerable. I didn't find myself fond of any of the characters to be honest. I also really struggled with the relevance of her parents history and their accident. I feel like that element was a bit muddy, and never really seemed to make a difference to the main plot.

Aside from those iritants, I really enjoyed the ending. I feel like the loose ends were tied up, and the final conclusion really was a "twist". It take a special book to leave you with more than 1 "bad guy", but The Marriage Counselor did just that.

A note on the narrator: if I was rating just on that, I would have given a 2.5 stars. I found myself wondering often, if part of the reason I disliked Adele so much, was the flat tone she was read in. I feel like she did a fine job, but failed to bring a personality to any of the characters with the exception of Tara, the best friend.
