Paige Crutcher has became one of my favorite authors and is definitely on an instant buy as soon as anything she writes comes out. I loved the orphan witch so much that when I seen this one pop up on netgalley I knew I would love it too and I was not wrong. This book was amazing too. I love reading books where I can put myself in place of the main character while im reading to make it feel like I am actually in the book and this book I did that with Aline. I love witchy books and this one is another one of my favorites! Anyone who loves witchy/paranormal reads this one is for you!
Aline Weir is a lonely girl who has always felt like an outsider until she discovers some "kindred spirits" as well as her own magic - in more ways than one! Overall, I enjoyed What Became of Magic by Paige Crutcher. I like books that have inventive, interesting plots and this one didn't disappoint! I did find that in the later chapters of the book the plot become a little too complex and hard to follow - at least for me - but it was still original and interesting. I also felt the pacing was a bit uneven - the first chapters at times felt rushed while the later chapters felt too drawn out in sections and then other scenes rushed through. I would have liked to read more about Aline's relationship with the sisters, her magical studies and her experiences traveling to Ireland. All in all, the plot and the characters kept my interest and the pages turning. Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for an advance reading copy.
Dnf. I just could not get into this book. It felt choppy at best and a little rushed in some places. We were doing one thing then bam we were somewhere else entirely.
Paige Crutcher writes the most unique stories and What Became of Magic is no exception. Aline Weir hasn't fit in her entire life. When she meets Dragon, a ghost girl, and Chlo, Liset, and Atti, the three owners of the town bookstore, she finally feels like she has found her people. Now, Aline is feeling alone again because her friends have disappeared. When a magical invitation appears to the town of Matchstick she sets off to find her friends and ultimately fulfill her destiny. I found that I was as confused as Aline at times as to what was happening and how she should proceed. Ultimately, with the help of others, the story all comes together in a wonderful way. There is a sweet romance, a big adventure, plenty of magic, and the fate of the world, all rolled up in this story.
This had an interesting, gripping plot that kept my attention and left me satisfied. This was a great read to add to your spooky season list.
What Became of Magic is a mythology-like story with fairytale vibes. There are magical characters as well as characters like Day and Night (which are literally day and night), It follows Aline, a hedge witch, as she meets up with Magic and tries to save the world.
There are many mysteries and riddles to unravel in this story. Whether it's a character, a location or something Aline is told, nothing in this story is as it seems.
Unfortunately, I read about half of this book and stopped because I had to work too hard to follow what was going on. It wasn't impossible, but I prefer to not have to go back and re-read parts. I'm all for world-building and unravelling a mystery slowly, but there's a difference between allowing information to unfold as the story goes on and having the reader in a constant state of confusion.
While this book isn't for me, I do feel like there are some people who would find the author's writing style, spellbinding. The author's voice and way of telling a story is unique, and even if it's not for me, I do appreciate writers who dares to stray off the beaten path.
It was okay but wasn’t a fan of the writing style. I would say it’s a 3.5 stars at best and the storyline was kinda weird
I am really enjoying books with magical elements at the moments so I was extra excited for this one!
Aline has always felt different. She discovers how different when she meets Dragon, a ghost, who shows Aline her gift. As Aline pulls away from the world, she is taken under the wings of three sisters at a bookstore. When the sisters and Dragon go missing, Aline goes on a mission to save Magic - only to find out Magic is not a thing, but a person. A very handsome and mysterious person!
This book was a little bit confusing for me. The premise was intriguing and the first few chapters really had me captivated. Excellent set up! I like the paranormal mystery aspect of the story and the riddles mixed in. The idea of "a story that is not just a story" is used to help Aline complete her mission. As the reader, I enjoyed the little stories that gave clues and insight into the mystery. It felt like reading myths! While I could follow the plot for the most part, I was often left confused by the magic system. I would not be able to explain it to another reader. The romance between Aline and Magic was sweet to read and I was satisfied with their ending!
P.S. the cover is lovely!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
"What Became of Magic" by Paige Crutcher is a captivating and magical tale that will keep you hooked until the very end. The story follows Aline Weir, a witch who has kept her powers hidden ever since a traumatic incident in middle school. But when she discovers the book of Mischief, her powers are enhanced, and she finds herself on an unexpected journey to a town that doesn't exist on any map.
Aline's adventure takes a dangerous turn when she learns of a lost magic that needs to be found and is told that only her unique powers can do it. However, what she doesn't know is that Magic is a seductive and dangerous person who has been waiting for a witch with powers like hers for centuries.
The plot is well-crafted, and the pacing is just right, keeping the reader engaged throughout. The characters are well-developed, and Aline's journey from a reclusive witch to a powerful one is inspiring. The author's writing style is descriptive and immersive, bringing the magical world of Matchstick to life.
Overall, "What Became of Magic" is a delightful and enchanting tale that will transport you to a world of witches, magic, and the power of self-discovery. If you're a fan of fantasy and paranormal genres, this book is a must-read.
I Love everything Paige Crutcher writes! This book was engaging from the first chapter. Of you are looking for a cozy witchy fantasy that will leave you feeling magically satisfied and hugged all at once this book is for you!
What Became of Magic started out strong for me but it lost some direction along the way. I had a hard time keeping the characters straight. I don't feel like there was enough description given for the characters to become known by the reader. The setting was not explained well enough and sometimes I did not understand where they were with all of the jumping around between worlds and that contributed to my confusion throughout the book. I wanted to like this a lot more.
Thank you for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was my first book from Paige Crutcher and I really enjoyed it. Her writing style is different and refreshing. What Became of Magic was a delight. The story was fascinating, as were the characters. I will definitely be reading more of her books.
Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin’s Press/ St.Martin’s Griffin for this ARC. ~I was given this book and made no commitments to leave my opinions, favorable or otherwise~
Thank you so much to Paige Crutcher, St. Martin’s Press and Negalley for an opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book. I really enjoyed this book. I was hooked from the very beginning and didn’t want to put the book down. I absolutely loved the premise, I absolutely love books about magic/ witch’s. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I have thoroughly enjoyed them and can’t wait for her next book/books.
Beautifully written
I adore Paige Crutcher’s work, and this one is no exception. We meet Aline Weir as a child, who is emotionally neglected by her parents and feels all alone. She doesn’t realize she’s a witch, but that changes as she gets older.
With the ability to see ghosts and the guidance of three women who take her under their wings, Aline’s life and purpose soon becomes very clear to her and the ghost of a young girl who was her only friend since childhood helps her along the path of fulfilling her destiny.
While I didn’t love this one quite as much as the others, it was still a good read and I will always pick up a book by Paige Crutcher!
I love love love this book!!! I am obsessed with this book!! I wanna live in the pages of this book!

This was a really fun read. It was my first Paige Crutcher book, and I would read more by this author.
I have enjoyed seeing more older FMCs lately. Our FMC is 30 here and it was a refreshing change from the usual 18-20 year olds we see a lot in this genre.
The story is set at a nice pace and is easily binged. I enjoyed the magical aspects and the world building. The romance was great. Overall an enjoyable read for me.
TYSM for letting me be an ARC reader for this one.
4.5 stars rounded to 5.
I received this from netgalley in exchange for a review.
This book was fascinating. I really enjoyed the premise, and it was one of those books where I couldn’t predict what was going to happen, but then was able to see where it came from.
I really liked Aline - her childhood in regards to her classmates was very familiar to me, and I enjoyed seeing her become confident and assured in her own powers, and deal with all the complications that happen when her found family went missing.
I didn’t think I liked Magic at first, but then I was so sad later on so it turns out I did fall for Magic, and I was satisfied with the ending thankfully, to make me so much less sad.
A beautiful story where we get to watch Aline find her place in a magical world after living a life where she never felt like she belonged. A life where she was invisible to most, and above all felt unworthy of other’s attention. This book was unlike anything that I have read, and I found the writing to be poetic, full of riddles, and honestly overwhelming at times. Although this book is slower than my normal reads, I think it has to be in order for you to be able to fully process the depth of what is happening and find the real beauty in the story that unfolds.
The description along with the cover of the bookmade me request this book. However I couldn’t get into it, and thought the book better suited for YA than adult.
First and foremost, thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for giving me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
WOW. The author and I have not crossed paths before; I have not had a chance to read any of her work. That being said, I am so thankful that I was given the chance to read this book. When I tell you that this book had me feeling all the things: I felt sadness, I felt confusion, I felt enamored, I felt immersed in this new world…I felt like I wanted more. Paige has such an artistic way of describing the world that she created on the pages that I couldn’t help but feel like I was right there alongside each character. I literally told my husband that it gave me serious Alice in Wonderland vibes and I was STOKED! Simply. Amazing.
With all of the positive things I could say about this book, there were a few things I would change which would give it 5 stars instead of the 4 that I currently have given it. The first reason was that the confusion level I had at times was real. Most of the characters spoke in puns - which all work out at the end - but I had to re-read sections to try to make heads or tails of what was happening. Additionally, there were times when you were reading from another character’s POV with no warning. It wasn’t super hard to deal with after the first couple times, but it threw me a bit the first time it happened. Another reason is that because it felt like the book had so much happening all the time the ending felt almost anti-climatic. I wanted more of a resolution and/or more of an epilogue.
I would recommend this book to certain friends of mine; not because I don’t think it’s a great read, but because I think you need to be in the right mindset to tackle it. All in all, I definitely plan to re-
read this book in the future!
