This book was hard to read through as a Kindle book. However, it does offer some great ideas of placed to visit across the United States.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Amazing book of all the great places to visit the outdoors among the 50 states.
This beautiful book is filled with exactly the sort of gorgeous photographs one might expect from National Geographic. This 736-page book provides an overview of 1,000 adventures, including hikes, ski slopes, bike trails, swimming holes, birding areas, and other sites of interest for outdoor activities. Each state gets a chapter that includes a map and a description of 20 adventures. Descriptions range from a couple of sentences to several paragraphs, just enough to inspire interest and provide a few tips.
At just over 7 by 9 inches, this paperback is a practical size to take with you on your travels. It would be a great gift for anyone with a sense of adventure who enjoys road trips combined with outdoor activities.
Thanks to National Geographic for providing me with an unproofed ARC sample through NetGalley.
Only saw a few pages of this book due to the settings, but the photos look really cool and there are a few different areas offered for each state.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.
The sample of only 10 pages for the state of Arizona showed how the entire book format will be. The beginning showed a map of the state with the activity areas located. Each activity had a good amount of information. I really liked that it includes which seasons the activities can be enjoyed in. I do have to say that these are activities that are well known things to do for those areas, nothing unique or new at least not from this sample. Overall, it is a basic yet beautiful travel book that is typical for National Geographic.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. I’ve always enjoyed National Geographic books and this one didn’t disappoint! Even though it was only a sample, the information and pictures were great. I’ll definitely be adding this to my collection.
This sample has me very excited to purchase this book and get to read the whole thing. It is going to add way too many things on my dream travel list, but wow just the few I saw were inspiring. I love the cover, layout, pictures, everything.
Keep in mind that this is just a sample. I'm talking, 10 pages. But knowing that, I would totally buy this. It has beautiful pictures, excellent ideas and would be great for getting us outside more and exploring.
The sampled section of the book the provided in this ARC is perfect for what I want, which is a sort of National Park Travel Guide, but with good photographs. This was a very small sample so it is hard to judge for the entirety, but the photography is as perfect as one would expect from National Geographic.
I can look up travel places online as well as the next person, maybe even better, but there is something special about seeing it in a book. I would love to see this book in the whole.
Very educational and informative. Tons of great ideas of things to do while exploring the great outdoor in each and every state.
The Great Outdoors USA was a short but powerful preview. With only ten pages in the preview it still packed a punch. The table of contents shows that over 700 pages will be included and the book will include all 50 states. For the preview we get to see the chapter on Arizona. The first thing that drew me in was the photography. The pictures were amazing and they had me wanting to do all of the activities from hiking in the snow to going white water rafting. My favorite part was the go further page because it presented additional and more unusual outdoor options .
A guide to adventures in all 50 states, with gorgeous pictures and well-written vignettes for each idea. The sample covers Arizona, a state with which I'm not that familiar -- but the listed activities cover all four seasons in many locations across the state. If all 50 states are presented as beautifully as this, it's definitely worth a look.
Thanks to NetGalley for this sample.
Living in the high mountains of Colorado I am 100% and outdoor adventure enthusiast. Incredible photography — we’ve been to many of the places mentioned in the super quick sample, but this taste is inspiring enough to make you want more. Thinking this might make an excellent gift for my husband.
This sample text of the Great Outdoors U.S.A. is everything I've come to expect from National Geographic. The pictures are crisp, clean, and interesting. The information is laid out in interesting and easy-to-reads ways. I also liked that they categorized each activity with a representative icon and included suggestions for the best time of year to those activities. I'm excited to see what outdoorsy adventures they chose to feature from my state. I definitely plan on purchasing this when it's published and utilizing it to plan trips and vacations.
Great Outdoors U.S.A. is the kind of publication you expect from National Geographic: Beautifully illustrated with well written informative text. In this case, it’s a catalog of the 20 most interesting activities you can enjoy in each of the 50 states. Lots of recommendations, so you can take your pick of adventures!
But you’ll want this book for the photos—the achingly beautiful image of the Vermillion Cliffs in Arizona made me want to hop on a plane to see them for myself! And the action shot of riding the Colorado River rapids is amazing.
A few of the image choices had me scratching my head: the Grand Canyon, one of the most stunning views on the planet, is represented by a photograph of a Cactus Wren, and some photos look like they were snapped by smartphone cameras (the Pipe Stream National Monument photo gave me that vibe). But those are minor nits in this otherwise excellent book.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of the Arizona section of this book in return for an honest review.
One part armchair travel and two parts fuel for getting out of that armchair and going somewhere, "Great Outdoors U.S.A." provides 1,000+ suggestions for ways and places to get outdoors.
With 14 pages of adventures for each state—Arizona, included in this sample, offers details on 10 adventures and quicker mentions of a further 10—there are enough options here to inspire years of travel throughout the US, whether you're interested in hiking or biking or rafting or birding or something else entirely. I don't have enough information to say how many of the suggestions will be friendly to those with accessibility concerns, but in general you'd be hard pressed to *not* find an adventure that speaks to you.
True to National Geographic's reputation, the photos here are gorgeous. If National Geographic</i> magazines have served as inspiration for you before, or if you've ever (ahem) saved a folder of National Geographic pictures to use as desktop backgrounds, you're likely to enjoy paging through this for the photos alone.
Thanks to the authors and publisher for providing this sample through NetGalley.
This was only a sample but I definitely wanted more! I’m going to need to read the whole thing when it comes out! Informative and beautiful pictures!
The Great Outdoors USA looks like it’s a great book with lots of fun ideas to get outside. I was only able to see a very small sample, so I can’t speak to the whole book, but the ten pages I saw were beautiful.
I am reviewing a sample of this book. I happened to get the Arizona portion, which is where I live. The photos are beautiful. The beginning of the chapter has a map of the state with all the locations of where the highlights are. This is a helpful snapshot of the state and can help plan out a route for exploring. I am an outdoor enthusiast and google/research all of the outdoor things to do. This book covers the biggest highlights, but then also included a list at the end with additional activities and places to explore. I was surprised to learn a few things from this list.
This book does a quick overview of each place, it is not an in depth description by any means. However, if you are looking for the best outdoor adventures in each state, this would be a great book to grab! And did I mention the photos are beautiful?
Thanks to Netgalley and National Geographic for a sample of this beautiful book.
