This was the first Agatha Raisin title I've read since the death of her creator, MC Beaton, so I must admit to being a bit wary. Fortunately, I had nothing to be wary over. Green has admirably managed to pick up where Beaton stopped and created a lively, if still prickly, blunt, and in-your-face Agatha. As I discovered, Green had worked with Beaton in the past to help her finish previous works, so it's no wonder he knows the character almost as well as her creator. Be sure to read Green's Foreword, btw, as it is quite revealing of both Beaton and Agatha, not to mention his own role.
Agatha has never suffered fools and that has definitely not changed. In her world, the biggest fool would probably be Detective Chief Inspector Wilkes. She has no patience with his self-important, quick to judgment calls, especially when he names her as a primary suspect. She didn't kill Sir. Godfrey, however, so who did? The suspects are numerous and most seem to have real reasons to want him dead, although, ironically, there are some whose lives are made much more difficult now that he's gone. And, oh, so many secrets and family turmoil. I won't detail the plot, it's both crafty and, well, rather impulsive, but it's a great deal of fun to watch play out with several humorous moments. All your ol' favorites are there, from James and Charles to neighbor Mrs. Bloxby, so I thoroughly enjoyed becoming reacquainted with them.
I will note that Agatha seemed to be much more insightful about herself than I recall, admitting to herself that she's aging, anxious about it, and still indecisive about the men in her life. I rather like John, so that was a fun one to watch, even if Agatha's impulsive need to push Wilkes buttons creates problems. Bottom line, lots of action, plotting, sub-plots, and both cats and dogs this go-round. Let's face it, Agatha isn't a dog person but, well, she seems to be warming up to them thanks to the wayward Ossian, the lab. I'm looking forward to seeing if that goes anywhere, not to mention seeing how her end-of-the-book plan works out.
Thanks #NetGalley and #StMartin'sPress - #MinotaurBooks for re-introducing me to the world of Agatha Raisin. I'm thinking I need to make a library run soon and read the books I've skipped, bad me. Kudos to RW Green for making Agatha live for me again.
A cute, cozy mystery that evokes memories of the TV show which made it entertaining. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I am happy this series is continuing on, and RW Green is doing a good job as its writer. Agatha Raisin books are always fun read and this is no exception.
I am so glad the series continues after the passing of M. C. Beaton.
R W Green does a fabulous job in continuing this series in the manner of M. C. Beaton.
Another mystery with Agatha Raisin right in the thick of it facing off her arch enemy the forever bumbling Chief inspector Wilkes. Her usual coterie makes their appearance along with a love interest.
Lovely cozy mystery that you can relax and unwind with.
Thankyou Netgalley for this ARC
Thank you to the author R.W. Green, the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity to review. My review opinion is my own. I have read the entire series Of Agatha and am glad the author and publisher continued the series after the death of M.C. Beaton in her 90's. R.W. Green has mastered the charcter of Agatha which is so unique and beloved by readers. His writing speaks to his close relationship with M. C. Beaton as they worked on continuing the series before her death. This is a wonderful addition to the series with all the complex supporting charcters we enjoy and a outstanding sleuth. Well done to the author. I look forward to more Agatha in the future books. You will enjoy Agatha , the sleuthing and the wonderful humor throughout that is the trademark of this fine series.
Ah, Agatha Raisin…. I am so glad the series continues. Roy, James, Charles and the rest of the gang join Agatha to solve another mystery. I will raise my glass in the red lion and say hooray to another book in the series.
Wonderful new Agatha Raisin cosy mystery by M.C.Beaton. I have read several of these and each one is fresh and exciting! Agatha is such a great character. She's direct, straight to the point and suffers no fools! I love the setting of the Cotswolds. The usual cast is there: neighbor and ex husband James Lacey,Mrs Bloxby and the vicar, Roy Silver, as well as Agatha's nemesis, Chief Inspector Wilkes. I highly recommend this fun and quick cosy mystery! Thank you to Netgally and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read one of my favorite authors before publishing day!!
Agatha finds the body of a local man who has an arrow in his heart and his pants around his ankles.
The local detective declares it an accident - assuming a stray arrow came from someone practicing archery
Soon the detective begins to believe her and considers Agatha the prime suspect. It is up to her to clear her name and as she does she encounters some nefarious character.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Press, R. W. Green, and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy of this book.
This was my first Agatha Raisin book of the long running series but I didn’t feel lost or the need to go back for additional background information. The story move along nicely and reaches a nice conclusion at the end. Good, solid mystery worthy of your time.
I have read every single every single Agatha Raisin installment in the mystery series and I think that this one is just as wonderful as the ones written by the author herself. As usual, we have our quirky cast of characters, along with some family secrets, my favorite 3 males that always appear - Roy, James and Charles who always seem to rile Agatha up. I really had a difficult time putting it down. There are always feel good moments and of course, some not so good ones. These books always have a way of making me laugh while making me try and solve a mystery. I loved it.
I love the Agatha Raisin series. It is comforting to catch up with re characters in Agatha's small village in the English Cotswalds. This book in the series continued by R Green is no exception.
Private detective, Agatha Raisin, has stumbled across another dead body --this time with an archer's arrow in his chest. In order to clear her name, she snoops into the deceased's riches to rags family and acquaintances for motives. Humor is infused into the plot as she dodges the inept Inspector Wilkes and finds the culprit.
This was the first book I have read by this author. I know this book is part of a series about these particular characters, but I didn't feel lost without reading the other books, so that was nice.
I could have done without some of the language, but overall, the book was fairly clean.
I found the book easy to read & easy to follow along. It kept me coming back for more & was intriguing. Overall, a good book & I look forward to reading more by this author!
Thanks to Netgalley & the Publisher. I was able to preview this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Agatha is at it again!
When a potential client ends up dead, Agatha takes it upon herself to solve the murder. Chief Inspector Wilkes is eyeing Agatha for the murder. Will she solve the murder to clear her name? Will she put herself in harm's way? You'll have to read the book to find out. I laughed out loud on several occasions and thoroughly enjoyed it. The murderer was a surprise too, bonus!
This is a great series, I love the writing style, the characters are so much fun and I can't put it down until The End.
No graphic violence
No descriptive sex
Mild language
I recommend this book and series to anyone in search of a good mystery.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book.
For the 34th. time I was able to join Agatha Raisin in her funny, convoluted and delightful adventures in crime solving.
Sadly, author Marion Chesney (a/k/a M. C. Beaton) passed away a few years ago, but her character Agatha Raisin, private detective lives on together with the very colorful characters who live in and around Carsley in the Cotswolds. This is thanks to brilliant writer R. W. Green, who was a friend of the author and collaborated with her before her death.
I have read every single Agatha Raisin mystery book, and as I read this latest installment, I truly did not for a minute think that I was not reading something written by M. C. Beaton. Agatha’s character and behaviors are described perfectly, as are those of all the characters we know and love. The antics and rantings are hilarious and I was laughing out loud many times while reading this book.
The ending of this book was absolutely very clever, and I was surprised at whodunnit. The ending chapters were gripping and very complex. I re-read the last chapter until I understood the most intelligent explanations. I will remember this book as a standout in the series.
I highly recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries. You will love this book so much that you’ll want to start at the beginning, 34 books back, and have hours of fun trying to solve murders along with Agatha.
Thank you, Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books for allowing me to read this book and post an honest review.
Another fun entry in the Agatha Raising series started by M.C. Beaton and continued after her death by R.W. Green. Agatha and her friends and foes are as engaging as ever, poking their noses into many things that shouldn’t concern them. Improbably for the not-so-athletic Agatha, the plot hinges on archery at a village fete in the Cotswolds. Agatha’s nemesis, Detective Chief Inspector Wilkes, decides that Agatha is his prime suspect in the murder of a local landowner — which spurs Agatha and her friends to find the real killer.
Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC of this book.
This is my first Agatha Raisin since M. C. Beaton passed away and left the series to R. W. Green. I thought perhaps I would notice a difference in the writing style or the characters I have gotten to know over the previous M. C. Beaton-written Raisin novels. Happily, not so. I enjoyed this book and learned a bit about archery while following Agatha and her employees and love interests to solve a murder at the town fete. There are a few bits of violence that perhaps are perhaps a bit more graphic than Beaton's, but otherwise, I think Green did a fine job taking over the series. Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC of this book.
I have read all of the Agatha Raisin mysteries and I rank this one very high. An interesting cast of characters, family secrets, Roy, James and Charles all make appearances. I had a hard time putting it down. Some feel good moments and some not so good. I look forward to the next one. I thank NetGalley for sending me an ARC.
Dead on Target: An Agatha Raisin Mystery by M. C. Beaton; R.W. Green is an excellent fiction/mystery that is the newest addition to the amazing Agatha Raisin series.
I have to say that this continuation of the beloved series after the sad passing of Ms. Beaton could have gone south, but I have really enjoyed the last several books by Mr. Green immensely.
Agatha has really come into her own. Her confidence, vulnerability, and her ability to voice her fears, wants, desires, and feelings to herself and (albeit sarcastically sometimes) others, truly making her a great character.
I loved this installment (#34 by the way). I loved the murder/mystery, the progression of the characters, their respective relationships, and where everyone is going.
I will always love Charles; I just can’t help it :)
The ending is satisfying, and promising, yet a tinge of bittersweet…however perfect and fitting. (I also loved the new author’s character note before the book began. Very nice.)
5/5 stars
I can’t wait for the next book.
Thank you NG and Minotaur Books/ St Martin’s Press for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 9/19/23.
I've read all of these books, watched the shows, and I have to say, Agatha has mellowed like a fine wine. Her character has more depth in this book than she's had in the past....especially in the first 20 books.
I'm glad that she has (finally) figured out what she wants and is pursuing it.
While MC Beaton is no longer with us, the author writing the series now does a really good job at keeping Agatha as nosey and interesting as ever. I adore each and every book I have read in this series.
