I am a huge Mary Kay Andrews fan and I loved Bright Lights, Big Christmas. The main character Kerry Tolliver has been hiding out at her family's Christmas tree farm in the mountains of North Carolina trying to figure out her life. Due to her father's illness, she has to help her gruff older brother & his dog, Queenie, sell the trees at the family stand on a corner in Greenwich Village. She and her brother are sharing a tiny camper and wile Kerry experiences Manhattan for the first time, During the weeks leading into Christmas, Kerry becomes close with the charming neighbors who live near their stand. Complicating everything is Patrick, a single dad raising his adorable son Austin on this quirky block. Will Kerry find her path again and maybe just the right person too? This is such a great book.
🌲 This is my second Christmas book by @marykayandrews and I think I loved it even more than I loved the first one I read (The Santa Suit).
🌲 I adored the setting (a Christmas Tree lot in New York), the holiday vibe, the characters, the romance, the 3rd act revelations… I even loved the camper! There is a found family element in the story, too, which is one of my favorite tropes. Everything was perfect!
🌲 I appreciated the main female character’s development arc. She learned to stop being so safe and to believe in herself, try new things, and trust others. I liked her a lot.
🌲 This book made me want to go out and buy a real tree this year. But if the prices that were mentioned in the story are legit, I’d have to take out a second mortgage on my house to buy one! Wow!
🌲 If you want a low drama, clean romance, light holiday read full of comfort and joy, then you need to read this book. I know you’ll enjoy it.
Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for an arc of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Bright Lights, Big Christmas has all the cozy Christmas vibes to get you in the holiday spirit.
The Christmas tree business is a charming idea, and the setting is nostalgic and filled with the comfort of the season.
I really liked the story, and most of the characters were likable. The only thing that took away from my enjoyment was Kerry's brother Murphy. He was annoying and showed a lot of needlessly rude behavior towards his sister. But despite that one issue, this was a wonderful feel-good addition to anyone's holiday reading list.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Mary Kay Andrews’ new novel, Bright Lights Big Christmas is a fun, heartwarming, enjoyable, dramatic and romantic story. Great personalities and engaging events kept me rooting for these characters, as it had such a great uplifting and hopeful vibe. Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
I received this e-book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the author/publisher for the copy!
The only other Mary Kay Andrews book I have read is The Santa Suit and it was so cute, I knew I had to give this one a try!
Kerry Tolliver has been tasked to drive and stay in New York City with her brother to help sell Christmas Trees from their family farm in North Carolina. Since she just recently became unemployed and moved in with her mother, she had some spare time to do so. Each year, Kerry's brother and Dad normally sell the trees, but because of a recent health scare, Kerry's mom will be helping to nurse her dad back to health. During their month long stay in Spammy, the family camper, Kerry gets to know the neighbors of the block they are staying on. Some neighbors though, she gets to know a lot better than the others and she starts to question whether she should return to her small town in North Carolina to live with her mom, or find other opportunities right here in the city?
This cute story just makes you feel nice and warm inside. This is a great Christmas book that even has a mention of The Santa Suit, which was a cute little connection. Andrews does a great job of creating characters that you care about.
A wonderful and light Christmas book. The Tolliver Family runs a Fraser fir tree farm in Tarburton in western North Carolina and for nearly four decades they have taken an annual trip after Thanksgiving with their fresh trees to West Village, New York. This year, Kerry an artist has to step in to help her family after their father returns from the hospital. With their cute 1963 Shasta trailer "Spammy" in tow, Kerry makes the 700-mile trip to their usual tree stand where she would stay with her brother Murphy and his English Setter "Queenie" until Christmas Eve. Kerry has some new and creative ideas that provides additional cash flow and sales so that the farm can meet the goals set each year. This was a cute and wholesome read. The author did a great job of developing the secondary characters. I adored them. I also enjoyed the small romance between Kerry and Patrick. This has a feel-good ending with the promise of a new beginning for Kerry, all with the happy holiday atmosphere.
Thank you to NetGalley, Mary Kay Andrews, and Macmillan
This was a slow start for me, but overall just a warm and fuzzy read, the perfect book to start my holiday reading.
Wonderful story of a brother and sister whose family owns a Christmas Tree farm in the Carolinas. They pack up their camper named Spammy and sell trees in NYC every year. They are met with a strong cast of quirky characters and a great holiday story unfolds. I’m going to miss these characters!
This Christmas book was so fun to read and I drank it up in one big gulp as I wanted to know how it would all be tied up!!!
Murphy and his dad, Jock, take their beautiful NC Christmas trees to NYC every year and sell them in the same spot. Jock has had some surgery and it not able to travel so Kerry, Murphys sister will be joining him this year. The people who are around their space are very kind and give them a place to shower and get food as Kerry and Murphy live out of a small camper that they call Spammy!! There are lots of obstacles to overcome and the neighborhood people are like their family.
This is a great holiday read and one that will put you in a good, festive mood!! Highly recommend!!!
I devoured this book because I fell in love with the characters and their little corner of New York. You can almost smell the pine trees with how realistically written everything is, and reading about a part of the big city that still has that wonderful sense of community gave me the perfect seasonal feels.
This book was the perfect kick off to my holiday book binge!
Mary Kay Andrews has done it again! Bright Lights, Big Christmas is a delightful, easy read. Kerry and her brother Murphy go to NYC at Christmastime to sell Christmas trees from their family farm. Will they be able to sell enough to support the farm? And who will they meet and what will they learn along the way? Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Kerry Tolliver's family has been traveling from North Carolina to New York to sell Christmas trees for decades. She has fond memories of it as a kid, but hasn't participated ever since her parents divorced and she stayed with her mom and her brother went with her dad. Now, all grown up, she joins the brother she hardly knows on the annual trip and discovers that the bumps in the road that left her feeling directionless might have just been steps to finding the life she'd always dreamed of.
It's a fantastic book full of likeable characters and sweet moments set in a location that makes you want to live there just to be a part of the community. A very MKA book in the best possible way.
Delighted thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the wonderfully emotional romance!
Oh, my! It’s going to be hard finding another Christmas book that was this enchanting! Kerry is unemployed and back home in the mountains when Christmas comes. Due to a health crisis in the family, she goes to New York with her brother to sell Christmas trees from the family’s tree farm. On that corner of New York City she finds a world that becomes her new home. New people, new love, and new experiences await her.
This story had a bit of a hallmark plot line. It was cute and sweet. It’s a good, quick holiday read.
Kelly Tolliver recently returned to North Carolina after having been away for many years, but her company downsized, and she found herself without a job. For the first time since she was a child, Kelly will be going on the annual trip from North Carolina to New York City to sell Christmas trees from the family farm. With her father being unable to travel this year it has fallen to her to be her older brother Murphy’s (whom she barely knows) right-hand girl for the holiday season. They’ll also be living in close quarters in the vintage camper they travelled in as children.
Kelly has some new ideas and some creative talent which she brings to the tree stand, realizing that people are willing to pay top dollar for luxury wreaths. Everyone in the neighbourhood seems to know Murphy and Kelly quickly befriends many of the neighbours as well. She meets Patrick and his son Austin; Austin takes to Kelly quickly and loves to spend any spare minute hanging out with her. Kelly and Austin also make a friend in an elderly gentleman who shares their artistic talent.
These newfound friends quickly become a family that Kelly has chosen for herself and as the days wind down before Christmas she realizes that she hates the idea of leaving.
I love Christmas novels and movies, so really enjoyed this novel and how a neighbourhood came together when one of their own needed them. Christmas spirit was definitely present in this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel. #NetGalley #BrightLightsBigChristmas
First and foremost, I would like to thank Netgalley and the publishing company for allowing me to read and review the ARC version of this novel. Thank you!*
Mary Kay Andrew’s novel “Bright Lights, Big Christmas really will set you in the holiday spirit.
In this book, we get introduced to Kerry, a woman from North Carolina at the cross roads when it comes to her family’s Christmas tree farm. She likes comfort, security in life and when her father can’t make the holiday run to New York City, Kerry is the one who accompanies her brother on the trip.
This story is adorable and the people of the city are so kind to Kerry. It really feels like you’re being sucked in to a big extended family, where neighbors care about each other. (Where in most cases, that rarely happens).
This was such a fast read and perfect to ring in the holiday season.
My rating is ⭐️⭐️⭐️ three stars for the story.
This is Christmas Romance. I really loved all the Christmas stuff in this book, and I also really loved all the characters in this book. I loved this book so much. This book had romance, family drama, great characters and a great setting. I loved it so much. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
I really enjoyed this Christmas romance based in NYC written by MKA. If your in the mood to pick up a good Christmas story this is a perfect easy read.
2.5 rounded up
I wasn't highly impressed by the book but the ending did make me happy so that added the .5
This was a delightful Christmas read of the Hallmark movie-esque variety. Kerry Tolliver finds herself reluctantly taking her dad's place in New York City to sell trees for the family's Christmas Tree business. On her adventures, she discovers some things about herself, bonds with her family, meets some new friends, and teaches us all a lesson about judging others. It was a fun holiday read with all the Christmas feels.
I switched back and forth between the Kindle version and the audiobook of this one. The audiobook is narrated by Kathleen McInerney. She did a fantastic job.
