Set in Old San Francisco this book is part of a series featuring Celia and Nick. The poisoning of a maid brings them together again. A good read.
Unfortunately, this book was all over the place for me. It was hard for me to focus on all the different directions the author took the mystery. Also, this is a later book in a series and there seemed to be a lot of carryover with no explanation from previous books so I felt lost with that as well. Also, the main female lead was quite annoying in the way she did everything, so I struggled with her as well. The book starts out with details about a doctor visit for the main female lead and her half Chinese niece, one of the things that seemed to be a carryover from the previous books, and then that character pretty much fades into the background with only occasional appearances in the story, so why start off a book with something that really ends up having nothing to do with the rest of the book? The solution to the mystery had way too many red herrings and way too many twists to make it realistic for me. The red herrings could have been portrayed better throughout the story without taking all the "aha, we have found the killer....oh, just kidding, they have a good explanation for their actions" twists that happened. The historical aspects and time period details seemed to be very well researched and written into the story. The descriptions were very detailed and vivid to imagine. It was really just the plot itself, and the length of the book for what was going on (it really could have been shorter), as well as the details from previous books about the characters and their relationships to each other and to the events in this book that weren't explained enough that made this book a struggle for me. I might have enjoyed this better had I read the entire series before reading this one.
This is a mystery story set in the old city of San Francisco. As such it deals with issues of post civil war San Francisco, and how the economy and people were impacted by post gold rush immigrants. Who murdered the maid in the family's wealthy mansion...who would want to? You have to read this novel to find out. Interesting novel with historical facts of that time and enough of a mystery to keep you involved.
Nurse Celia Davies and Detective Nick Greaves are on the case again in old San Francisco. Set in 1868, Celia attends a society masquerade ball to celebrate the engagement of a young couple that will cement two wealthy and powerful families. Celia has reason to be concerned about the reputation of the groom and how he treats others.
When a maid is poisoned, both Celia and Nick end up hunting for the killer. Was the maid the actual intended victim or was it one of the family members who was meant to be murdered? By whom? Why?
The author takes you to the mid-nineteenth century San Francisco, providing lots of historical detail.
There were plenty of characters and lots of clues to follow to the final solution.
Thank you to Beyond the Page Books Publishers and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read NO JUSTICE FOR THE DECEIVED by Nancy Herriman.
Synopsis:
Word of an upcoming engagement between two prominent families concerns Celia because she worries that the bride to be may be making a mistake. The groom to be is a known womanizer and a controlling man who does not respect women. He has recently been linked to a violent attack on a former mistress. Someone is murdered and Celia discover that the fiance is the intended victim.
Detective Nick Greaves is called to the scene to investigate the murder and learns that Celia unearthed valuable clues. They team up to investigate.
In the sixth novel of this series, Celia and her cousin Barbara sees a doctor about Barbara's clubfoot. They deal with the patronizing attitude of a doctor. Unfortunately, there are some people who are like that. This is set in 1868 San Francisco a few years after the Civil War in the States.
I just couldn't get into it. The story was ok but I found the characters confusing and had a hard time keeping my attention focused.
I really enjoyed reading the sixth installment from the A Mystery of Old San Francisco series, No Justice for the Deceived. I am giving it four and a half stars.
This story involves two main characters, Celia Davies and Detective Nick Greaves. Celia is a nurse but she always seems to get involved with a murder mystery. There are multiple suspects and it kept me guessing until the end. There is also the relationship between Celia and Nick, which at times seems romantic. This was the first I had read in this series but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment as small recaps were given. The author really sets the scene for what life was like for people from different stations and backgrounds. There is prejudice against different cultures and women by some people. This was a very entertaining read, there is a personal mystery for one of the characters that is yet to be resolved. I will look out for more in this series. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the sixth book in the Old San Francisco mystery series by Nancy Herriman. When a servant accidentally dies at a masquerade ball, Celia and Nicholas races to find the killer.
This was a great mystery with a touch of romance. This story has many twists and turns to keep you guessing. I thoroughly enjoy this series and look forward to reading the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for a copy of this book for review.
This is a well written historical mystery set in San Francisco, February 1868. The central characters are Celia Davis and Det. Nick Greaves. When Celia attends a masquerade ball at the home of one the wealthiest and oldest families she finds herself drawn into a murder. The occasion should be a happy one - to celebrate an engagement that will join two powerful families. Celia has grave doubts about the groom with his reputation for mistreating women and for wanting to control all of those around him. During the party one of the maids is poisoned. was she the intended victim? Or was it he? Nick gets the case and together with Celia, sets out to catch the killer but not before another woman is killed.
Who had motive and means and what dark secrets are being hidden by a family that has so much at stake. Enough to keep hidden that a murder or two seems like the right solution? From the clever mystery full of twists, turns and red herrings to sort out to the well described setting of San Francisco, this series is a must read for anyone who enjoys historical mysteries that immerse them in the period.
My thanks to the publisher Beyond the Page and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
A smart historical mystery filled with an authentic atmosphere, accurate details and a detective duo who are strong-minded but appropriate for the time. A very good mystery with plenty of twists that kept me guessing until the end.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest opinion.
This is the sixth book in this series but is the first one I have read. While it might be best to read them in order to follow the development of the character's and the romance between Nick and Celia to get the most out of the story it didn't affect my enjoyment of the mystery. The mystery was very well written with lots of twists and turns and red herrings. I did suspect the answer but it wasn't by any means obvious and I found it very entertaining. The romance side didn't develop at all during this book at all. I will be going back and reading the earlier books. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air so much so a few days later there was a masquerade ball to announce an engagement but unfortunately the person playing the corpse isn’t a guest but a servant and when it looks like the poison was intended for the groom to be Cecilia finally gets an investigation. Sebastian car is the groom today and unfortunately he’s also the one who stopped his fiancé from being Cecelia‘s benefactor in her healthcare endeavor and he’s also accused of paying a young boy to throw acid on an ex lady friend of his. So needless to say they are mini people who may have wanted to do it including Cecelia but who actually did it it will be up to her and her bow to figure it out. OK they have too many names in this book for my old brain to remember but that’s not to say I didn’t thoroughly enjoyed it and absolutely want to read the next one this book has many great subplots to go along with the main plot and I loved all of it. I love Cecelia Mr. Grimm her bow Cassidy I love the whole crew in this book and maybe by the next book I will learn all of their names. This is definitely a solid read and a great mystery I have really started loving cozy mysteries in historical mysteries are my favorite and the San Francisco mysteries are up there with some of the best. I received this book from NetGalley and publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
A party, a poisoning, and many people of interest! A young woman hired as a day laborer for a prestigious San Francisco family is poisoned while working a masquerade party. There are lots of suspects, lots of mis-information, and lots of scandal to dig through. Nick and Celia make the most of their individual talents to try to find the person who killed the girl. This book also has another murder and a wrongfully accused child who dies in prison. So many tendrils to follow, but the writing allows you to do this effortlessly.
Ms. Herriman does a fabulous job mixing things up and giving clues that you don't realize are clues until you finish the book! Her research is spot on and just a delight. Weaving historical fact together with fiction, the story and characters just jump off the page. You can figuratively see the dingy windows, smell the horse dung, and hear the wagons creak by.
I have read all of the books in this series and have enjoyed them. This book can be read as a standalone, but in my opinion, the series is best read in order. It's not a hardship! I can't wait for the next in this series!
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book. The review is my own.
Nick and Celia try to solve the murder of a maid in a wealthy family's mansion. Great historical details and interesting characters. The plot was complex but there were enough clues to keep the reader guessing. The ending had some loose ends, maybe to be cleared up in future installments. Nick and Celia spent relatively little time together, which was a disappointment, as their relationship brings a spark and some excitement to the story.
This mystery was so good. It is a perfect book to get lost in. This book was gripping and it had me guessing g til the very end. I loved this book so much!!!

A great entry in the Mystery of Old San Francisco series, I enjoy the historical background and the characters kept my interest. I was invested in the story and how it would play out. I hope this series continues and can't wait to read more from Nancy Herriman.
No Justice for the Deceived is the first of Nancy Herryman's books I have ever read. I typically enjoy a good mystery. The descriptions are amazing. I felt like I was there in san Fran Francisco. I also appreciated the author's use of language.
However, No Justice for the Deceived lacked an element of urgency.
The plot was all wrapped up in the end and made sense, but the book just seemed much longer than necessary and contained too many characters. keeping up with all of them was too tedious work when I simply wanted to enjoy a good read.
I found one typo at location 1221in the file that I read. "Letting her curiosity got the better of her."
A good historical mystery that kept me guessing. Like the fleshed out characters and the well plotted story.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
While this is book six in this series, it is the first one I have read and I greatly enjoyed it. While there were a few things that are probably clearer if you read the previous books, but it was still a good read. What I love the most is the history weaved into the story and that it has a lot of twists and turns, which makes this one that was a really good read. I will have to read the previous books and follow up with the next book to find what happens where this one left off.
