Love this story! The pictures are so colorful and beautiful. I love that the book encourages children to celebrate their various skin tones. I also love the interactive element of the coloring page. So fun!
SOOOOOO cute, wonderful read, I would love to read this to my son. Such a celebration of culture and family!
Adorable book about celebrating yourself and those around you for the delights they are. I enjoyed the art and the beautiful connection it showed between the mc and all the people she loves within a premise of getting dessert which most kids will be able to relate to.
Fudgesicle by Tinee Furbet is a sweet celebration of family, culture and skin color.
Novi and her mom take a trip to the ice cream shop on their island of Bermuda. The illustrations show the beauty of both the people in Novi’s life and the place she lives. We also learn that fudgsicles aren’t just chocolate, there are many, many colors and flavors to choose from.
I really liked this simple, lovingly illustrated story. There is even a coloring page at the end. It’s a perfect opportunity for lively discussions and crafts, especially when the weather is warm. And what unites kids more than ice cream? This book is delightfully delicious.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Fudgesicle released on January 4, 2023.
I LOVE this story, a great way to showcase and appreciate different shades of skin color! In my preschool class we do a study where we discuss the different shades and tones of skin colors, this book would align perfectly with this. I actually think the “flavors” are some of the names for my skin tone paints!
Fudgesicle is adorable! I love how it shows kids that all colors of skin are possible and are great! This is perfect to introduce diversity to kids.
This was such a cute story. I loved the representation of beautiful black women. I imagine this will show other black little girls that they are beautiful and unique. The representation will show them that people in books look like them too. I thought the illustrations were beautiful too
I received a ARC in exchange for my honest review. Thank you! All thoughts are my own.
This is the sort of book I would have adored as a child, it would have made me feel seen and helped me understand and love who I am and what I look like. I thought that the illustrations were absolutely gorgeous, extremely eye catching and vibrant and conveys the important message of the story in an extremely accessible way that a child would like, that being through ice cream! It explains to the reader that whilst we may have different skin tones, they are all beautiful. It makes me so happy that these stories are out there to give young black children the positive representation that they deserve.
Fudgesicle is a beautifully illustrated story depicting a young brown girl and her mother getting a tasty fudgesicle treat. The girl, Novi, compares the different colors/flavors of the fudgesicles to people she knows and their skin colors. This story is a great book to have in your classroom to offer a mirror or a window for diversity of skin colors. I gave it 3 stars as I didn't quite understand the repeated lines comparing the fudgesicles to skin colors followed by saying it was a delicious delight. Seemed a little off-putting to compare the treat to all of her relatives and then call it delicious. Even considering that, I thought it was a cute story featuring women of color.
Special thanks to NetGalley and KP Publishing for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.
I want to say thank you to @netgalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Fudgesicle is a colorful, positive, upbeat story of a young girl's introduction to a chocolate-flavored Bermuda fudgesicle. Novi and her mom discover how different fudgesicles can be compared to various brown skin tones, including her own. During their day's journey, Nov experiences disappointment and joy and learns self-awareness, self-image, and self-confidence lessons. The book includes a blank coloring page so readers can color Novi.
This book was too cute! I loved all the sweet descriptions Novi gave for each of her family members. This book has a powerful message that there is beauty in all shades.
Loved how each fudgesicle represented someone she loved! Cute idea to have the coloring page in the back.
This was a beautifully illustrated children’s book in which a mom shows her daughter the beauty of fudgesicles. Not only are they delicious but they come in a variety of colors. This book is for young ladies to feel empowered and see that all skin tones including all the different shades of brown are appreciated, beautiful and loved! Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for my honest feedback!
Today I had the great privelege of reading "Fudgesicle" by Tinee Furbert and illustrated by Gherdai Hassell. The story, first of all, is top notch and a wonderful way to explain the "flavours" that people come in. Mom and Novi visit an ice cream shop where there are so many flavours of fudgesicles....one to fit everyone in Novi's family. Ms. Hassell's illustrations are masterfully done. Simple and joyful, she brings out the colours and essence of Bermuda in the rich scenes she creates. I truly enjoyed this book!
Fudgesicle is a sweet treat book with a powerful message for young girls of colour to love and accept their natural skin tones. Novi's mother, who is patient and loving in telling Novi about the various fudgesicles and then comparing them to various brown skin tones, including her own, is my favourite. The illustrations are just as charming as the story.
A short & sweet read to teach children that all skin tones are “heavenly made” & valued! My son loved looking at the beautifully illustrated pictures with me. I really appreciate the many different skin tones represented. My kids would also love the coloring page at the back.
What a cute and easy way to begin a conversation about diversity! The author uses delicious fudgesicles to showcase that we are all beautiful and unique. Every shade is beautiful.
The font was a little hard to read but that's why I have glasses.
This was a cute story celebrating individuality that any child would love. The illustrations are incredibly cute.
I really loved this book! It's such a cute and easy way to start conversations about race and diversity which I think is very important. The plot was a little bit simple for me. I think there could have been a little bit more depth to the storyline and characters. The illustrations were very beautiful and cute, I loved them very much.
The cover art is gorgeous and ignites curiosity. I loved the theme and the illustrations were beautiful. My only concern was the font is difficult to read for some young learners. It’s a wonderful concept and my nieces loved the representation. The coloring page was an excellent touch!
This book is a cute and creative way to start the conversation about race and representation with children, but I find it very trite. The font is hard to read, the plot is really basic even for young kids and the characters (two) have no depth. I think even a trip to the store to get fudgesicles can create a bit more of a story and less two sentences on every page.
