“For the poor and infirm, the voiceless and hopeless, we do not relent. We do not forget. We are the Dread Penny Society.”
Great end to the series! I have really enjoyed all the books in this series and after the bombshells in the previous book it was great to see the conclusion with Moirin and Fitz. I would definitely recommend this book and the entire series. I also really loved the penny dreadful but Mr Kind in this book. I found myself eager to continue that storyline

The Dread Penny Series is full of suspense and twists and turns. Moirin Donally, the Dread Master of the Penny Dreadful Society has been trying to hunt down the person known as The Tempest for five years. Whenever she gets close enough The Tempest is nowhere to be found. The Queen and the Knave was one of my favorite books in the series. Moirin shows how brave and determined she is.in trying to make sure the authors are safe and that she won't stop hunting down The Tempest.
Here we are, at the conclusion of the Dread Penny Society’s battle with the criminal ring run by The Tempest. While I’m sorry to see it end, I was thoroughly satisfied with the resolution of all that had been built up for the Society and its Dread Master in the previous books of this series. Many readers, I know, really focus on the romance aspects of this series. But what I have enjoyed the most is the mystery, the secrets, and the fight against evil. There’s something about Victorian criminality that gives me just the right level of creeps. I love seeing the characters traverse the maze of London, the secret passageways, and all the riddles involved with solving this mystery. As always, the penny serial stories were a fun addition. I highly recommend this unique series for anyone who loves historic fiction and suspense.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this novel and this is my freely given opinion.
It took me longer than expected to get through this, and I think it is because I did not want the series to end. I found it t0 be a charming and unusual series with unusual characters from diverse backgrounds, with such great interconnected relationships. I started in the middle of the series, and while I did enjoy it, for anyone who has not read the series yet, it would be to their benefit to start from the beginning as many characters and relationships carry through.
In this final book, the brewing conflict between the Dreadfuls and their ultimate nemesis, the Tempest comes to a head. Moirin is discovered to be the Dread Master, and the Tempest, knowing this, challenging her directly, by threatening all those she loves. Moirin is forced to think on her feet to protect her fellow Dreadfuls, and all those she holds dear, as the Tempest breaks down all the protections the Dreadfuls put up.
Despite being surrounded by friends and family who love her, Moirin has always been somewhat alone though, taking the responsibility of caring for Brogan as they ran from their past in Ireland after being orphaned, and then as fugitives. Then as the mysterious Dread Master. Now her secrets also come tumbling down one by one as she tries to evade the traps of the Tempest. The Tempest fully expects that Moirin would face her alone, but Moirin is not alone. Even when she sends the Dreadfuls away to save each other, she still has one stalwart ally who refuses to leave her side, even when he finds out about her real hidden identity and fugitive past, and that would be Fitz Parkington, the blue bottle constable who has helped the Dreadfuls in the past. He has inserted himself in the middle of Dreadful business, trusts what they do for the community, and trusts Moirin, and chose to be beside her to stop the Tempest.
Wonderful, interesting adventure and drama, that has been slowly building up in the series. I really enjoyed the strong female characters, and the complex relationships, and the good vs. evil drama.
Again, I also enjoyed the change in atmosphere with the two penny dreadful serial stories interspersed in the main story. They are such a delight and I loved how the one story paralleled the relationship between Moirin and Fitz.
I am just sorry to see the series end.
4.25 stars out of 5
Terrific conclusion to a series with plenty of twists and turns. I really love the storyline behind the DPS and all they stand for. You will certainly want to read the rest of this series before this concluding novel. The characters are sweet, gutsy, and brave. I loved watching all the characters come together to take on the Tempest! Fitz and Morien are such a great couple. Their teasing banter is so much fun. I really liked the story inside by Mr. King. Not so much the other penny serial included except maybe for some comic relief. I am looking forward to the compilation of the DPS novels with a few more stories by Mr King thrown in.
This has been the best of book series. As in the others I enjoyed the twists and turns, suspense and genuinely not knowing what would happen next. I was left guessing till the end if there would be a hea and how or if the dread penny society along with the dred master would be able to escape this challenge and come about. The story and plot flowed very well. I enjoyed the funny moments and camamraderie. I loved the penny dreadfuls just as much as the rest of the book. Those were a great addition. The square off between the Tempest and Dread Master was fabulous. I also thought the detective was great for Moirin. I thought this was a well rouned story and series.
How can I describe this final book in the Dread Penny series? In a word, momentous. This started as sweet love stories with action sprinkled through, and slowly ramped up until the master piece that was this final novel. I finished the Bachelor and the Bride early this morning and IMMEDIETLY read TQATK. It did not disappoint!
Was it perfect? No, but regardless I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Sarah M Eden is able to write not just characters, but people that feel real. This particular book had the very sassy Moirin and Fitz. They had an already established friendship that grew very quickly with this instalment. The mystery of who the Tempest is and what they are after comes to a head, and the story comes full circle to end the series with a bang.
Over all, a wonderful series, full of action, mystery, and of course sweet romance. Each couple had a distinct voice, and utterly adored each other by the end. Some might find it a little too sweet or insta love, but I am a bit of a hopeless romantic. If you want romance with a healthy side of action and mystery, you can't go wrong here
I was so happy to be back in the world of The Dread Penny Society, yet a little sad knowing this was the final installment in the series. I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. This has been such a fun series, intertwining adventure, mystery and romance perfectly. The Queen and the Knave, book 5 in the series, has all of that, along with two protagonists, Moirin and Fitz, that you can't help but root for. I absolutely needed a happy ending for Moirin. If you've read and enjoyed the first four books in this series, you're going to love the conclusion. If you haven't read any yet, I recommend doing so.
The Queen and the Knave-the narrative conclusion to Sarah M. Eden's Dread Penny Society series-is, in my opinion, nothing short of phenomenal. It is genuinely one of the most expertly plotted, tightly-woven, and heart-poundingly-tension-packed finales I have ever read.
Its cast of characters, as ever, is strong and lovable, and it was thrilling to see the whole Dread Penny Family come together for another high-stakes adventure (and trust me, the stakes in this one are higher than ever). As many of you likely already know, this book also focuses on two new protagonists (as well as the delightful characters that populate the equally delightful penny dreadful tales sprinkled throughout the book)-protagonists readers met briefly in past books in this series, but whom I was excited to see get their time in the spotlight and develop over the course of the plot.
And they did not disappoint.
I fell in love with the stories of Moirin and Fitz almost instantly. They are dynamic and well-crafted characters, with a strong balance of humor, heart, and seriousness who show significant growth throughout the book, both individually and in their relationships with each other and with the other characters in the book.
That, of course, really shouldn't surprise me. Nor should Eden's talent for creating such a vast array of clues, backstories, and sometimes seemingly insignificant elements, all interspersed throughout the plot, and cleverly woven together in ways that I, for my part, always find pleasantly shocking and thrilling.
She has done it, after all, for the entire series. But she continues to amaze me every time.
This, as I can say from personal experience, is the kind of book that is likely (if you enjoyed the previous books in the series) to hook your interest and not let go. The kind you may end up losing sleep over because you just need to know what happens next. That sets your heart pounding from all the plot twists and tension.
And that proves, ultimately, to be even more satisfying than I, at least, initially anticipated (and I went in with high expectations).
Well done, Sarah M. Eden, and thank you. I can't recommend this series or this title highly enough.
This isn't Eden's normal series, but she remains one of my favorite authors. While not in her normal genre, this is an exquisite example of writing. Characters are well written and the plot is very twisty.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
I love everything about this book! This has been my most-anticipated book of the year, and I'm happy to report that it exceeded my very high expectations.
Characters--Móirín Donnelly is just a fantastic lead character. I've loved every glimpse of her throughout the series and was so stoked when I first found out that she'd get her own book, and this totally exceeded any expectations I had. Detective Constable Fitzgerald Parkington hasn't had as many appearances in the series, but seeing him alongside Móirín, I totally adored him. They are perfect for each other. They're terrific at supporting each other and teasing each other. I absolutely adore a book with good banter, and Sarah M. Eden does banter better than just about anyone! Secondary characters are also great; I love seeing all of my favorite characters from the earlier books in the series.
Plot--Holy cow! I reread all of the previous books right before reading this one so everything would be fresh in my mind, and while that's not strictly necessary to enjoy the book, I'm so glad I did because it just made it that much more intriguing as I tried to guess what would happen next based on what had happened before. I'm so impressed by how everything came together.
Setting--This series piqued my interest in Victorian England, and it's only grown since the first book. I love seeing what life was like for various classes of people in Victorian England.
Writing--Sarah M. Eden is my favorite author; I just really love her writing style. Everything is planned out so well and the writing is smart, fast, and engaging. (I also love the fact that she's an avid researcher so I can trust that the details are right!) I know there are some readers who don't love having the penny dreadfuls thrown into the books, but I've enjoyed each one. I love seeing the parallels between the penny dreadfuls and the plots as well as seeing what the penny dreadfuls reveal about the character who is authoring each one. (I also think it's totally brilliant of Sarah Eden to keep the voices of each distinct, rather than making each penny dreadful sound like every other one.)
So, again, I loved this book and the series. I think this was a practically perfect ending to the series, and I can't wait to re-read it.
5 stars. Not only is this one of my picks for one of the best books of the yea, it gets the title of my favorite book of the year.
I read an ARC provided by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Love, love l, love Sarah Eden. The witty banter, amazing character development and sweet romance always have me coming back for more. This is a great series.
First off, if you haven’t read this series yet, you shouldn’t read this review. I’ll try my best not to leave spoilers but that’ll be really hard to do. *** So again, if you haven’t read the series, don’t read this review. Go read the series.
And a little side note for those who care-I like to read the Dread Penny mini stories separately because personally they detract from the story a bit. Though interesting, I prefer to skip them and read them at the end.
Now to the review.
This series is best read when you’re in the mood. I know the difference and I read this one when I was craving the DPS world filled with action, mystery, and the DM. And that made all the difference!! I loved it and it was so fun to read more of Moirin’s past, her romance with Fitz, and the havoc made by The Tempest.
Sorry, keeping it short so I don’t accidentally spoil anything. Just know it didn’t go how I had expected and most reveals were surprising but good!!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Note: You need to read the series in order of publication.
A very well written conclusion to the series. A lot more actions, more plots than the previous instalments in the series. There are a lot of unexpected twists and turns! And of course, how could we forget the delightful central couple in this book?
Móirín is easily my favourite heroine. She's very likeable. I've adored her from the role she's been playing in the shadows from the previous instalments. Her romance with Fitz is very well written and well developed. They are super cute together too! Their banter is perfect!
It follows the usual format of the other books in the series. Even so, there's a lot of things happening in this book. Updates on the other couples and characters, and seeing them coming together to defeat the bad guy! The focus of the book is the main mystery and the taking down of the Tempest. The romance, even though not taking the center stage, does not feel rushed and very nicely weaved in to the story.
Lastly, many thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley. I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Sarah M Eden never disappoints!
This was a fantastic conclusion to a great series.
The recap in the beginning was just enough that I wasn’t lost but also wasn’t bogged down by stuff I knew already. It was great seeing the MCs from previous books in the series!
Read this if you enjoy….
-romance with mystery (perfectly balanced amount of both)
-Sarah M Eden books (and if you’re not sure, just read it anyway-you’ll be hooked!)
-White Collar (odd, I know. But it’s got this great kind-of-criminal-helping-the-cops thing going on and I love it!)
-any of the previous books and their MCs
Just go read it!
This book is amazing, thats for sure. It's the final installment to the series and an amazing finale at that. I loved the Dread Pennies that are in this book (as I have loved all previous ones). As to the main story... The Romance is absolutely in the background and its mystery focused which I liked but as with the previous ones it's just a little too dark for me. It feels so hopeless at times that I even had trouble sleeping afterwords... (which never happens to me). I know it's supposed to feel life & death (but also all the humor which I usually love in Edens writing was missing) maybe I'll take a break from Edens Mysterys for a time...
The Queen and the Knave was a wonderful final installment of the Dread Penny Society series. Moirin and Fitz are clearly meant for one another, with their great personal morals and playful banter translated very well into a historical setting, without losing the romance. The mystery and connections to the previous novels were also spot-on, and there were many clues and nooks and crannies in the story to find and discover as the book went on.
I believe that this is one of the most powerful books of Eden’s that I have read so far. It is clear that she had a broad message throughout the entire series about women and society, starting from Elizabeth’s school for girls in the first installment, to the central conflict and final battle of The Queen and the Knave. There were many passages that I highlighted for their strength of insight and commentary about the world. I will miss the DPS very much!
I am continually impressed with Sarah M. Eden’s ability to write in the voices of her characters, and nothing showcases that more than her Dread Penny Society series. The Queen and the Knave is no exception.
This is the finale we’ve all been waiting for, and IT. IS. EPIC! All the players are on the board. Secrets are catching up. Hiding places are no longer safe. Who will win the war and be crowned victor?
The story is fast pace and full of details. I had to reread some sections to make sure I knew what was going on. The Penny Dreadfuls interspersed throughout gave great insight into the main storyline (like always). Pru and Posie reminded me of the Bluey “Grannies”. IYKYK 😅
Overall, I am still catching my breath after that intense roller coaster-in the best way possible. I’m sad it’s over, and will definitely be rereading the series.

Oh my goodness! What an incredible, twisty story to finish up the Dread Penny Society series! I could barely put this book down to go to sleep after I started it, and I definitely finished it first thing the next morning. The mystery of the series was already at such a high point before I started this book, so I wasn't sure how it could get more thrilling, but Eden just did it! This whole series has been masterfully written and this last novel was no exception. Móirín and Fitz were awesome characters, full of depth, humor, and moral courage. I just loved them with their intense journey and romance. Sigh. So sad and yet relieved for our characters that the series has ended. 😁 Beautiful done, Sarah M. Eden. Absolutely stupendous.
I’ve enjoyed and not enjoyed the books in this series, but of course I had to read the final installment. I usually skim the story within a story and this one has two. This definitely doesn’t stand alone and should be read in order.
As this wraps up the series, there’s a heavier focus on the resolution than love. I wished for a little more romance between Móirín and Fitz. The romance almost didn’t need to be there at all since Móirín is a strong character and this is heavily plot driven. The last quarter is an exciting conclusion to the series but I wish overall the pacing was better and the setting for the final showdown scenes better described.
If you haven’t read the other books, I don’t know if this book will draw you in. If you’ve been a fan of all or most of the books, this is a must read.
