Our family read the Fablehaven series years ago and have been fans ever since. This year, the Official Fablehaven Cookbook was released and it is full of fun! It features an original Fablehaven Adventure called, “The Missing Brownies” that is funny and sweet and fans of the series will really enjoy it.
Beyond that, there are recipes inspired by characters from throughout the series. Readers will love learning how to make Fairy Toast, Mummy Dogs, Zombie Cake Eyeballs, and my personal favorite, Coulter’s Caramel Apples. For those last summer gatherings, you could make a yummy dessert like Goblin Glop Trifles or a drink like Singing Sisters Bubbling Brew. Need a craft to chase away boredom? You can make Wizard Slime or Shapeshifter Playdoh. There is something for every occasion in this cookbook! Each recipe is easy to make with beautiful eye-catching illustrations and they also feature a quote from the book the recipe appeared in or at least what the character might do with the recipe. This imaginative and entertaining cookbook is a must for Fablehaven fans or anyone who loves to try new recipes with a fun twist!
I’m not sure why this series is getting a cookbook now… the last book in the series was published in 2010. The series has had staying power and is still read by millions of children around the world but it’s not a big glossy in your face series. There’re no complaints because this is a well-done cookbook. I enjoyed the recipes and can’t wait to make the Midsomer Strawberry Salsa with cinnamon and sugar tortilla chips. The way the author and the person perfecting the recipes wrote this cookbook, where it gives snippets of various pages of the books as well as making each recipe about a character and event just works well. I think it’s fantastic that in the end of the book there are non-edible recipes for things like kinetic sand, slime, and super bubbles. While I don’t see the need for this cookbook, I do see it getting checked out of the children’s libraries for a long time to come.
I love the short story at the beginning of the cookbook and all of the references to Fablehaven characters at the beginning of each recipe. Reading these recipes made me very hungry and there are quite a few recipes that I cannot wait to try, like the hot chocolate, the brownies, the strawberry salsa with cinnamon chips, and many more.
Fun addition to the Fablehaven series! I didn’t expect to find a new short story inside a cookbook, but since it’s about magical creatures called brownies that leave you surprise treats they make out of ingredients left on the counter overnight, I guess it makes sense. Knox and his sister Tess are asked by their Grandpa Sorenson, caretaker of Fablehaven, to investigate the abduction of brownies from their community.
Contains many easy recipes for foods kids will eat, that go along with quotes from the Fablehaven books. Also has a unique section of recipes for fun crafts like kinetic sand, invisible ink, slime, and giant bubble solution. Our favorites are Bubda’s Sloppy Guac, Hugo’s Mudslide Ice Cream Cake, Kendra’s Chocolate Covered Krispies, and Savani’s Tropical Smoothie. Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for a copy to use for my review.
I feel a dozen steps behind because i was totally unaware of the Fablehaven series of books and therefore entirely unfamiliar with the delightful world within. This cookbook is a collection of predominantly sweet treats, magical drinks, with a scattering of recipes whose purpose is fun, not gustatory revelations. The pictures are gaze-worthy and pounds may ooze on just from the cravings they inspire.
Having read the Fablehaven and Dragonwatch series as they released, I was especially excited for this read--and it did not disappoint!
The bonus short story was just what I'd expect, and Doren and Newel were a hoot as ever.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy the recipes (and the end results!). The dishes remind me a lot of those included in An Unexpected Cookbook: The Unofficial Book of Hobbit Cookery (high praise!), and the two would complement each other nicely--both as fantasy-inspired cookbooks and inspiring readers/chefs to explore the worlds they're based on.
I especially liked the Mexican and Mediterranean recipes included. I'm already hungry!
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
If you’re a Fablehaven fan or enjoy creative themed cookbooks, this is a must! My kids and I love the Fablehaven series and were thrilled to give this cookbook a try. We were delighted to find a short story at the very beginning involving Grandpa & Grandma Sorenson, Tess, Knox, and those hardworking Brownies. The recipes that follow are delicious with whimsical titles related to the series, fairly easy to make for older elementary school kids and up, and have easily obtained ingredients. Also included are fun hand drawn illustrations, beautiful photographs, and a brief description at the beginning of each recipe describing how it relates to a Fablehaven character or story.
The first recipe, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffins, is tied directly to The Missing Brownies short story found at the beginning and is so yummy! From there, the cookbook is divided into seven sections:
Breakfast
Lunch and Snacks
Midsummer’s Eve
Treats
Drinks
Brandon’s Favorites
Crafts.
Each section contains at least six to ten recipes or more, with over 50 recipes total.
My family loved the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins, Secret Satyr Soft Granola, Sorenson Buttermilk Pancakes, Easy Fair Folk Tortilla Pizzas, Olloch the Glutton’s Carmel Biscuit Bars, and so many more! I can’t wait to try all the recipes. It was also amazing to have craft recipes for Hugo’s Kinetic Sand and Wizard Slime among others.
There are so many fantastic recipes that there’s bound to be several favorites for anyone who picks this up. It’s a great way to combine a love of reading with cooking. Many of the recipes will be perfect for Halloween or birthday themed parties. Highly recommend, especially to Brandon Mull fans! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.
I didn’t realize that this cookbook was in conjunction with a sci-fi series. The story that went with the recipes is entertaining. The recipes are easy to follow and I can’t wait to try some of them. Added bonus there are pictures with the recipes.
My kids and I all love the Fablehaven series, so I was excited to be given the chance to try out this cookbook. The two recipes I've tried so far have been hits. My kids all agreed that the Ogre Stew tasted better than the recipe I usually use for White Chicken Chili, and who doesn't like chocolate chips in their banana bread? I'm planning on having my kids each pick a different recipe from the book to help me cook, and then we can vote on our favorite.
As for the cookbook itself, it's very well put together. I always love cookbooks that have pictures of what the food is supposed to look like. It's a lot easier for me to skip over a recipe that doesn't have a picture. The book is high quality, and seems like it will last through multiple uses. The story at the beginning and all of the descriptions for each recipe are a nice touch as well.
Cute idea! I do feel like it's kind of simplistic, but the extra story is fun! It is a delightful book and will engage the target audience of the Fablehaven and Dragonwatch series.
What a magical cookbook. This is a must for Fablehaven fans. My kids and I had so much fun re-reading Fablehaven this summer and making whimsical recipes to go with it. The recipes are simple and delicious, as well as go along perfectly with the characters and themes of the books.
I was a fan of this cookbook before I even opened it up to see which recipes were inside! Themed cookbooks are so fun and the creativity that went into these recipes was astounding.
The fun thing that makes this cookbook stand out were the stories included within the pages of recipes.
The pictures were exciting and fantastical. Being a sucker for anything breakfast related myself, the apple pancakes, buttermilk pancakes, loaded crepes, and fairy toast all stood out to me.
If you’re hungry and like to experiment with different types of meals, this cookbook will be perfect for you!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
At the beginning of this cookbook is a story of Seth and Kendra and brownies that disappear in their kitchen. The sections include; Breakfast, Lumch and Snacks, Midsummer’s Eve, Treats, Brandon’s Favorites ending with some crafts. The directions are clear but while some are easy like pancakes or using a cake mix with add ins to make Zombie Cake Eyeballs others are more complex. And although there are healthy things like Tomato Soup or hummus most of the recipes are on the sweeter side. I love that each recipe has an accompanying color photo.
You don’t have to be a Fablehaven fan to use the cookbook. I can see many of the recipes being used for themed parties. Fablehaven books are geared towards upper elementary school and middle-schoolers. And I’m sure that age group would love to assist in making some of these fun recipes. I looked up Cherie Mull who co-wrote this book and learned she is Brandon’s sister in law and she runs her own bakery. Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have never personally read the Fablehaven series, but I heard a lot about them. I love to cook and bake and like companion books like this to series. Plus I got a little taste of Brandon Mull's writing with the story included at the beginning of the books. I love the names of the recipes and the little writings that go with them. I enjoyed this a lot for it gave me a little taste of this world.
As a huge fan of the Fablehaven series, this was a blast to review. My kids (ages nine and 12) chose some recipes out of the book to make. It was fun to read about the food and drinks our favorite characters like. It was even more fun making those recipes! The ingredients were easy to find and the directions were easy to follow. Our family loved reading the snippets about why the recipe was in the cookbook and how it related to the series. We loved the Shadow Charmer's Hot Chocolate. We got to join the Sorenson's for breakfast by having the buttermilk pancakes. Using Vanessa's secret code, we wrote messages to each other. In short, we became a part of the story. Once released, this book will absolutely be joining our shelves!
Thank you NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for sending this electronic book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
This cookbook is a must have for Fablehaven fans. While I haven't made all of the recipes yet, the ones I have tried were yummy and complimented the series very well. We are currently reading Fablehaven as a neighborhood kids summer book club and letting them snack on Fairy Milk and Muriel's Pretzel Knots while reading has enhanced the level of fun and engagement the kids are getting with the book. Highly recommend!
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved Fablehaven when it came out and this cookbook brought back all the memories! I will be trying out these recipes and rereading the series again!
For context, I am an adult who enjoys a good fantasy adventure even when the target audience is a middle-grader and the Fablehaven series was one that I really liked. I also like cooking and have a rather serious collection of cookbooks and a few not-so-serious cookbooks; from hobbits to Hogwarts, Discworld to Disney and even Downton [Abbey], I have the official or sometimes unofficial cookbooks so its fair to say that I have some understanding of the subject. With that out of the way, my thoughts on this book:
This official Fablehaven cookbook really does a wonderful job of truly bringing in Fablehaven, even starting with a short story that I'm sure will engage kids even if they haven't read the stories before. The illustrations are great as well and appear to be by the same artist that worked on the original books. The book is well organized and there are photos accompanying every recipe. All of the recipes are straight-forward, most with a short list of simple steps and ingredients, and look like kids can help make them. And a short "craft" section in the end is an extra bonus.
This book is a winner for Fablehaven enthusiasts and whimsical budding junior chefs alike.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review thru NetGalley.

This recipe book is so much fun! The little tidbits about the Fablehaven series, as well as the short story included, would make any Fablehaven lover's heart happy.
The recipes are perfect for a preteen or teenager starting out their cooking journey. They're simple, the kids will love them, and they're fun for the whole family. I love that the ingredients are almost all ones that can be found in the pantry. The recipes are not overly elaborate, which just makes the whole experience more magical when a young person is able to make something that they read about in their book.
I love that this recipe book references different characters and their food preferences. It enriches the experience when reading the Fablehaven series.
This recipe book is also perfect for Halloween! So many of these recipes I've book marked to make around Halloween. The names fit, the look of the food fits, it all is just a lot of fun with food.
My children personally loved the Mummy Dogs and thought they were really fun.
I can't wait to continue to make these fun recipes, and to relate them to the Fablehaven books.
I was unfamiliar with this wildly popular series of books. But after doing some investigating, I became enchanted.
The books center around a secret sanctuary, Fablehaven, owned by the main character's grandparents. Fablehaven shelters mystical creatures from the brink of extinction. Within its hidden confines lies a stronghold of pure magic, an enchanting haven teeming with wonder and excitement.
The cooking magic happens at night when magical elf-like characters named brownies come to the kitchen and create recipes from disparate ingredients left out by the characters in the book.
This book starts with a delightful story introducing the reader to the engaging Fablehaven characters. Then it gives the reader easy-to-make and fun recipes accompanied by snippets of stories and beautiful photographs. The section alone on Halloween Treats makes purchasing the book worth the investment.
Fablehaven is a captivating fantasy story and a perfect Halloween present for young readers. Its captivating and suspenseful plot will keep them hooked and eager for more. With its mystical creatures, adventures, and thrilling challenges, Fablehaven will ignite their imagination and leave them wanting to explore the rest of the series. Additionally, it can be a great opportunity for a kitchen cooking project inspired by the fantastical world of Fablehaven, adding an interactive and creative element to their reading experience.
