Another thrilling read by a very talented author. I haven't read much by this author, but every time I do, I enjoy it from beginning to end, and can't wait for the next one! Recommended.
Thank you to Netgally, the publishers, and Robin Mahle
When I requested this book I was unaware that it was apart of a series, one that requires you to read the previous books for this one to make sense. I am unable to read all the previous books along with this one before the publish date. Therefore, I will rate this a fair 3/5 stars and will adjust the rating and review when I am able to read all the books in the series along with this one.
My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review.
A very well written Police procedural clever descriptive intelligent storytelling with plenty of surprises and twists along the way. Totally engaging from first to last page a taut tense thrilling read. This is the second book in the series and while there are a few references to the first book, it in no way stops you reading this book as a standalone story. Rebecca Ellis our lead detective is brave feisty smart and I look forward to reading more books in the series.
Completely recommended.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of this book. This book was dull and the characters got on my nerves. I found it hard to follow and predictable
Thanks to netgalley for providing an advanced copy for the purpose of review
This was a gripping police mystery with lots of threads running through it which come together perfectly. Looking forward to reading more.
The second in the Rebecca Ellis series this is a fast paced story full of intrigue which goes back many years to an old case that no one wants to talk about. The identity of the killer and even more so, the reason for the deaths left me speechless. This is a really good police procedural with hopefully more stories to come.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book
Book two in the Detective Rebecca Ellis series continues with the discovery of a body found in the woods that had been frozen for months. Initially thought to be a possible hunting accident, it is ruled a homicide. The investigation reveals the deceased, Terry Satchel, worked for Connex, a company Ellis’ father investigated 20 years earlier. A couple of his coworkers advise Ellis his death may be related to something going on a Connex. Things take an alarming turn when Ellis’ best friend is attacked and days later her father is fighting for his life. Ellis’ life is further complicated by an emerging love triangle.
This is a fast-paced enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more in this series. Thank you to Net Galley, author Robin Mahle and Inkubator Books for the opportunity to review the advance copy of this book.
I really wanted to like this story, but it just never took off for me. I enjoyed the characters and the plot, but the action and suspense limited. I am new to this author and feel it is appropriate to read the first book in the series to get a feel for it. If this book sounds interesting to you, I recommend you try it.
I requested this book because it takes place in Bangor, Maine, and I lived there for part of my childhood. It’s always fun reading a book set in a place you know but there’s no sense of Bangor in this book. I looked at the author’s bio when I was done and she lives in Virginia.
The book honestly did nothing for me. The characters are all referred to by their last names but they call each other by their first names. I could never keep any of them straight. The minutiae of descriptions of actions was annoying. He buckled his safety belt. She touched her nose. It plodded.
The crime wasn’t particularly captivating and much of the plot was implausible. The way the police operated was not impressive. The MC had to be told that you can learn a lot about people from the internet. ??? In the tiny city of Bangor, the officers were not familiar with a factory in their own town that employed 300 people and had been there for decades. There were a lot of incredibly fortuitous coincidences that helped them solve the case. I made myself finish it but I wouldn’t read another in this series.
No real trigger warnings— very little violence, no sex, light cussing, very straight, white, boring cast of characters. Might be a good fit for those who like cozy mysteries as it’s just a step away.
I read a digital copy of this book for review.
Robin Mahley's "A Frozen Grave" starts out very interesting. Two friends accidentally discover a body in the City Forest. The deceased was dressed as a hunter. I was very curious about who he was and why he was found dead. I was interested in the cause of his death. The case will be led by detectives Rebecca Ellis, Euan McCallister and Connor Bevins. Will the autopsy reveal the correct cause of death? I read with bated breath. Dr. Rivera conducted the autopsy. In addition to this case, Detective Becca Ellis has personal problems. You will get to know them by reading this book. It's worth taking a closer look at it. What's happening at Connex Solutions? Why did at least two workers lose their lives? I couldn't wait to find out the truth. I read this book with bated breath. Detective Ellis had been given a clear warning not to mess with the case. I was literally terrified. I was worried about her and her family. If you like good thrillers, then go ahead and reach for "A Frozen Grave". Here you will find a good plot, even better action and interesting twists. It's worth reading this book.
I really enjoyed this book a great mystery with lots of twists and turns. Murder, suspense and a little romance. I love Rebecca and her partner Euan. I didn’t read the first book in this series but I’m definitely going to read it.
The first I read in this series and enjoyed it. Rebecca is a strong and clever character, the plot is solid and kept me guessing, and I liked the storytelling.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
I love this author's writing style! It grabs you from the beginning and keeps you invested until the last page. Rebecca Ellis is a strong lead character. The mystery is full of twists. I enjoy watching Ellis navigate the case and her interactions with other characters. Her professional and personal lives intertwine in interesting ways. I'm also a big fan of McCallister. I can't wait for the next book!
A Frozen Grave is my second Robin Mahle novel. She is quickly becoming a favorite. In this book, a body is found out in the woods and has been out in the cold for a while. The police must work to figure out who is person is and whether it is an accident or murder. They end up with a string of murders linking back to a company who may not be on the up and up with environmental safety.
I love the character of Rebecca Ellis. She is no nonsense and is respected among her peers. This book has a hint of a love triangle, but romance is not at the front of the story. The mystery unravels gradually, but not too slowly that I was bored. I do wish there had been a big reveal or climax at the end, but I'm satisfied with how it ended.
Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for this ARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Frozen Grave by Robin Mahle.
Detective Rebecca Ellis Book 2.
During the spring thaw, a body is found in the woods. Buried for months under the harsh winter snow, the dead man, Terry Satchel, appears to have been the victim of a hunting accident. But when Bangor police detectives Rebecca Ellis and Euan McCallister are called to investigate, they notice unusual burns on the body. With no friends or family showing up to claim the dead man, Ellis and McCallister decide to do some digging. In Satchel’s former workplace, Connex, two co-workers come to Ellis claiming there is much more to his death than she knows, and she begins to follow a new lead - one that takes her down a deadly path. Ellis soon discovers that Connex executives have covered up some very bad things which happened 20 years earlier. And that her own father, retired detective Hank Ellis, led the investigation at the time. Things take an even more sinister turn when Ellis's best friend is attacked and, days later, Hank finds himself fighting for his life. Are these incidents related to her case? Who else around her is in danger? And is someone coming for her next?
Really enjoyed this book. I did like Ellis. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.
Robin Mahle returns following No Safe Place (5 stars) with the second in the Detective Rebecca Ellis riveting crime thriller series with A FROZEN GRAVE —A man left in the woods for months in the snow, murdered.
A sinister and complex investigation leads to a whistleblower and a company that will stop at nothing to HIDE its deadly secrets.
Set in Bangor, Maine, the book opens with some hikers discovering a man's dead body deep in the City Forest, a large preserve well beyond the trails no one would have seen. He appears who appears to have been a hunter with an orange vest. Otherwise, he was not dressed for the weather.
What kind of hunter comes out without an ID and is not dressed for winter? He has burns on his body. Of course, it was not a hunting accident, and the man was murdered before being placed in the woods. Also, what is up with the chemical burns on his body?
Bangor police Detective Rebecca Ellis and her partner, Detective Euan McCallister, are heading up the case.
Twenty-five-year-old Connor Bevins, the youngest detective on the force, was allowed to be involved. He is cocky, good-looking, know-it-all attitude, a rich kid with a past his parents covered up.
Who was the dead man in the woods? And what was he hiding?
Ellis and McCallister do more digging since no one has shown up or reported the dead man. It turns out the man is Terry Satchel, single and worked at Connex Solutions, a manufacturing company, and had been dead for months.
When they began investigating the management at Connex, it appeared something was wrong. Conspiracy, murder? But they need proof. Everyone in the company is running scared, but they need an insider. However, every person who gets close to the truth winds up DEAD.
Rebecca's dad, Hank (retired detective) headed up a Connex investigation with his partner back in the day. There were environmental issues. They soon learn Connex executives have covered up some deadly things for over 20 years and appear to be at it again. The more Detective Ellis and McCallister dig, the more they are in danger.
Then it gets personal when they come after Ellis, her dad, Hank, and her best and her best friend, Piper.
People inside the company are scared, and Terry was a whistleblower with evidence and about to turn it over when he was murdered. How many people are next before they get the bad guys?
A FROZEN GRAVE is another intelligent, high-stakes thriller with intrigue and suspense. The author has created a fantastic female lead with Detective Rebecca Ellis. She is smart and savvy, and we see her personal side and complex relationship with her dad and brother (now in rehab). Plus love the attraction and chemistry between Ellis and McCallister!
Detective Euan McCallister is quite mysterious, sexy, and intriguing (former Boston cop) with a past. Happy, he finally confessed to Rebecca about what he went through in Boston. Some sparks are flying between the two, and excited to see what is coming next with these two in #3.
Also looking forward to hearing more about Connor and what he will get into in future books.
VERDICT: "Mahle's second, Detective Rebecca Ellis, grabs you from page one to the explosive finale while you anxiously await #3. A propulsive, razor-sharp intelligent cop procedural meets psychological crime thriller. Lisa Gardner's DD Warren series fans will find much to like here! I love this series!"
I enjoy this author's writing style! I highly recommend reading NO SAFE PLACE before this one. However, the author does a great job updating you on the characters if you read as a standalone.
Thanks to #InkubatorBooks for a gifted ARC via #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

An excellent sequel to No safe Place, the first book in the Detective Rebecca Ellis series. If you haven’t read the first book (and you should), the author provides enough back story to this second book. A man is found frozen in the forest, but his is not a recent death as due to the extreme snow fall his body has just been uncovered. Why had no one reported him missing? Becca is the daughter of retired Detective Hank Ellis and takes the lead on the case. As they finally find a link to the dead man’s employer, they begin to get a sense that his work was somehow connected to his death. No one wants to talk on record, but when another employee suffers an “accident” how many more will die before Becca and her team are able to take down the killer? Her father once worked a case that involved the same work place and when his life could be at risk, she realizes that the killer will do what is necessary to stop the investigation. If you like a book with a strong female detective along with a host of continuing characters that add continuity to the story, then this is the series for you. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of A Frozen Grave, the second novel to feature Detective Rebecca Ellis, of the Bangor, Maine PD.
When the winter thaw comes a body is found, killed in an apparent hunting accident and buried by the snow, but Becca and her partner Detective Euan McCallister aren’t so sure when they discover strange burn marks on the dead man’s face. He is quickly identified as Terry Satchel, who worked at Connex, a local manufacturing plant with a poor environmental record. Two employees hint that there is more to Satchel’s death and Becca soon begins to wonder if she is being targeted with threats to her nearest and dearest.
I thoroughly enjoyed A Frozen Grave, which has many unexpected twists and turns and ended up in a place I didn’t see coming. It was refreshing to read a novel that started as one thing and covered a lot of ground to get to somewhere completely different, while simultaneously returning to the original premise. I can’t explain further without spoilers, except to say that the author has a good feel for misdirection.
The novel is mostly told from Becca’s point of view with other characters chipping in as required in furtherance of the narrative. It works well, whetting the reader’s appetite for more, ramping up the tension among the Connex employees and throwing in some food for thought. I’ll be honest and admit that I had no idea of who did what, or even who the bad guys were. It had me glued to the pages, desperate to get these answers.
There is rarely a dull moment in the novel with several deaths, a couple of dangerous events and hails of gunfire at unexpected moments. That’s just part of the plot, so the reader is kept busy digesting these events and trying to find a a connecting logic. Still Becca is there to make sense of it for us befuddled readers and even she can’t get it straight without help from technology and serendipity.
I like Becca and the team as they are nice, ordinary people doing a dangerous job. Becca is the daughter of a legendary detective in the department and while he’s retired it doesn’t stop him poking his oar in when he feels like it. He’s both a blessing and a curse, and who hasn’t felt the same way about their parents? There is a hint of chemistry between her and the mysterious Euan McCallister and that adds a dusting of spice to the read, although it’s far from romantic suspense territory.
A Frozen Grave is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
This was my 1st time reading a Robin Mahle book and it won't be my last. What a book!! This isn't just another murder mystery, it is so much more than that! And it's all sp original and such a unique plot. The characters are well written and the twists and turns are so cleverly written. They fit perfectly but you still don't see them coming. I can't wait to read more!
I enjoyed this book! The mystery develops at a decent pace but the character development of the investigative team is more drawn out which leaves you wanting to read the next book to see how their lives evolve along with solving crime. The romantic element between Ellis and McCallister is there and interesting but doesn’t railroad the murder mystery itself and takes more of a back burner in the story, which I liked here.
In summary, the book has a good pace, likable characters, and an interesting mystery. This is a good quick read mystery/crime novel to add to your list.
