Sadie enjoys her small town life, working alongside her grandmother in their bakery. However, she is also cursed to lose her magic after her fourth heartbreak. Sadie lets few people in in order to protect herself from losing her magic.. but at what point is she giving up a life of love for a life of magic?

I enjoyed this book and appreciated the way everything wrapped up at the end!

This witchy fantasy is a fabulous addition to your TBR. What if your magic powers can be powerful? You would take it right? But with your magic comes a curse. Everyone has to learn what they can and can’t do with their restraints. Everyone has their own path and their own curse. This book had everything one needs for a healing and cozy read

Author : Breanne Randall

Thanks so much Alcove Press and NetGalley for an advance read in exchange for this review!

This book was surely a wonderful change from my usual read and I am not mad about it. Practical Magic meets a delicious baking show. The writing was superb and the characters had amazing dialogue and connection. I couldn’t help but want to place myself in the book.

This was a great page turner. I laughed a lot, I cried a lot && I read this book in about a 24hr time span. I didn’t want to stop living in this world. This book is a must read should be on everybody’s TBR.

Thats NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this digital ARC.

The story has so many high and lows. I laughed and I cried so many times. Poor Sadie could not catch a damn break! I loved how loss can bring people together. I also love the message that through Love all is possible. Loved all the little recipes at the end of each chapte too.

I hope this author continues Sadies and Jakes story. .

This really did remind of a blend of Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic. I loved the magical elements combined with Sadie’s cooking, it definitely made me hungry too. I did feel like this was more YA than adult fiction

I found out about this book from booktok, where the author promised a small town Gilmore girls meets practical magic and not did she deliver! The town, family home, and the cast of characters are all more charming than the next. She describes all of the food in a way that made you feel as though you were really having it - like the dinner scene in Hook. The addition of the recipes at the end of each chapter brings the reader into the story even further, allowing you to experience it with all of your senses and not just your imagination. I loved this book and hope that there will be a sequel!

The characters in this book were quintessential “small town” I laughed out loud several times. Just by reading the first few pages you’re transported into this world and invested in Sadie and her magical world.

I loved the parallels between baking and magic because baking IS magic when you bake with love. I loved all the recipes between the chapters it was such a fun touch.

Thank you NetGalley and Alcove Press for the ARC.

First off, thank you so much for this ARC! I was over the moon to get the opportunity to read it.

This story was wonderful. What a heartbreaking, devastating, honest and yet, wholesome and magical way to look at grief.

I think I cried 7 different times, which is a lot for me, but I truly connected with the relationship between Sadie and Gigi.

I loved the magic system and the recipes were such a fun and cute addition to each chapter. What I wouldn’t do to be invited for a meal with the Revelare family!

Fingers crossed this is just the start to their story!

This was a disappointment for me, The blurb sounded great but it was overloaded with characters which didn't allow for a full development of the characters. I really disliked the romance element, it felt forced and Sadie forgave Jake way too easily. Who runs into the arms of someone who hurt them as soon as you see them again years after?

I think the author has potential but she threw all her ideas at one story and it is very clear how influenced she was by Practical Magic. The book would benefit from an editor going back over the story to help it. I received an early advance so it is possible changes will be made before actual release.

This book was a miss for me. I do see high ratings from others but I couldn't see the appeal.

I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love books filled with family and magic and I really liked this one. I loved the small town vibe, the love between all of the family members, and the delicious recipes that were included. I got a little lost in all the magic at the end, but all in all I enjoyed it.

This book is really lovely, but heartbreaking at the same time. I really enjoyed the world building around witchcraft. Sadie helps the people in her small town through her magical baking. Her family is cursed though and four heartbreaks spells disaster. Her former love shows up, her brother is missing, and her grandmother gets diagnosed with cancer at the same time threatening her curse. Some of the book is predictable, but it's a nice cozy read. There's real recipes at the end of each chapter. The books is described as Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls; I don't get the Gilmore Girls vibe, unless they're talking about the dynamic between Sadie and her grandmother, which I still don't really see. That doesn't necessarily take away from the story though.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

A cosy and beautifully written magical fantasy with an interesting Witch family and the lore that surrounds their power and consequently curses. Firstly I loved the recipes at the end of each chapter, it added a personality to the book bringing scenes to life and I will be sure to try a few. I wouldn't say this relates to Gilmore Girls but I did enjoy this a lot it was not what I was expecting, I loved seeing the characters develop as they come back together and learn more about themselves and overcome their past and future struggled. Also the romance was so cute - right person wrong time. I just wish I could learn more about their family history and their magic but as this seems like it will be a series we may learn more about this in future book, so I can't wait to see what happens next.

This was a creative book about a magical family. I think it was a good concept, but I couldn’t really get into the style of writing and did connect with the characters.

I received an advanced copy from Netgalley, but all opinions are my own.

Breanne Randall's "The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic" is a delightful read that seamlessly blends elements of fantasy and romance to create a unique and engaging story. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own distinct personalities and quirks that make them feel like real people.

The protagonist, Emily, is a strong and independent young woman who has been through her fair share of heartbreak. When she discovers that she has magical powers, she initially sees it as a burden, but eventually learns to embrace her abilities and use them to help others.

The plot is engaging and fast-paced, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes. The magical elements are well-integrated into the story, and Randall's world-building is impressive. The setting of the book is vividly described, making it easy to imagine oneself in the world of the story.

Randall's writing style is smooth and easy to follow, making "The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic" a perfect read for fans of both romance and fantasy. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and entertaining read that will leave them feeling uplifted and inspired.

I wanted to love this book since it seemed like the perfect blend of all the favorite witchy tropes...unfortunately it was just all the witchy tropes put in a blender. Feeling more YA/new adult than adult fiction based on the behavior's of the characters, my issues might just be a mismatch of expectations, but none the less, this didn't completely hit the mark for me.

The premise was good and I very much enjoyed the world building. The witchy mythos here offered so many chances for great narrative. The text was overall very referential to many genre classics and had the promised feel of Alice Hoffman et al. Randall's research is evident in the mythology of the plants and recipes, and that aspect of the characters and their magic was really well done.

However, there is a lot going on to the point that many subplots are left hanging, while others feel crammed in to finish the story. The conflicts (and its solutions) are very obvious so sometimes watching the characters figure it out felt a bit like moving heavy furniture. The timeline can also be confusing, though that may have been a formatting issue since I was reading a digital ARC that (I hope) has not yet been fully edited.

Overall, this is a book with so much promise, and an author from whom I would love to read more. There is a seed of something great in here and I look forward to seeing if Randall's story telling blooms.

3,5* This is a nice debut novel, but I wished more. A book about magic, family, love and grief.

Sadie's life revolves around cooking, her family and her magic, but magic in the Revelare family comes with a curse.

What I'm going to write makes more sense with this premise: the book is tagged as general fiction(adult), but while the characters are adults, it felt more like a young adult novel: both in how it's written and as all the events end up as a mean for Sadie personal growing.
I liked the plot, but there was no crescendo, nor the unravelling of a deep mistery, it felt kind of slow, not really engaging.
I felt for Sadie, Gigi, Seth and Jake, but I wished more insights: while Sadie is the main character, Seth struggles are merely voiced, Seth and Raquel involvement is barely mentioned, all the curses feel like Damocle's sword waiting to fall on their head, the past is remembered but there's no big flashback, more a recalling of a series of events.
The blurb and other reviewer keep comparing this book with Gilmore Girls, which I loved, but I can't really relate the two...
It was however a nice reading, there are big emotional moments and I "liked" how the author managed the grief theme.

Thank you NetGalley and Alcove Press for sharing a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
