As usual, Nalini Singh has another hit on her hand with Resonance Surge. We learn more about Theo Marshall and the cuddly bear Yasha (not to be confused with Pasha, but hey, they are twins!). Theo has been tasked by her twin (not that anyone knows they are twins) to check out a situation that could be a problem for them later. Yasha in turn is given the task of watching Theo and has a STRONG attraction to her. Issue: he keeps seeing her death. What is the problem they are investigating? Will they find the solution in time? Will Theo survive? Will Yasha finally get his mate? Will his twin Pasha finally get his?
It was good to revisit many of the characters we have met in the different books in this series. I would recommend this book for those that enjoy a little romance, a little mystery and many, many bears!
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book for an honest review.
If the 5 stars weren't clear enough- I loved this book.
SUMMARY- Resonance Surge primarily follows Theo Marshall and her bear Yasha. When the current (and good) Marshall leader discovers a potential problem he asks his twin Theo to check it out. While there Theo has to face her horrible past and her wonderful future, with bear shifter Yasha. Too bad he keeps seeing her death in his dreams. Yasha also has a twin Pasha, who as we know is tried to Arwen Merchant. Will our two favorite boys finally mate?
THOUGHTS- It was great being back with the bears in Moscow. They feel so fresh and exciting, which is much needed by Book 22. The setting and characters are familiar enough to bring warmth but new enough to bring excitement. Add in another Psy family dynamic- it really helped to uplift this series.
Theo and Yasha were great characters and there was a strong dynamic between the two. I loved seeing Yasha as a descendant from a Psy-Changling mating and how that played into the storyline. I wish/hope we could see more of this situation play out. Theo had a typical bad psy upbringing, but she was a major introduction to the Marshall family. I am very interested to see how that will play out. I also loved that she was so low on the gradient and I hope to see more of that in the future as well.
It also was really refreshing to see Nalini continue to expand into LGBTQ+ relationships. I love Arwen and getting more of his story with Pasha was something I had hoped for but honestly wasn't expecting. While it wasn't an even 50/50 split between couples, we definitively got enough Arwen/Pasha content to make me squeal with joy.
Overall- I feel invigorated with this series. It was nice and fresh and I am actually interested to see what is next.
I’m so happy to get a glimpse of both twins! I was looking forward to see another E in full bloom. I love that the story line is getting more detailed and connected. Seeing the struggle and the growth on all three sides. But bears… I love the bears. But I miss the leopards. I hope we get back to San Francisco. Bring it back to where it began. There were a lot of funny moments but only in this world would a tremor happen and I giggle and thing oh boy Kaleb and Sahara are at it again! Ha! I love this world!
Nalini has done it again! She writes such beautiful stories and the world building is top-notch. It makes it so hard to wait for the next one to come out! I love these bears as well. It's been amazing to see where this particular arc has gone, and I can't wait for the next one.
Wow! As always Nalini Singh tells an amazing, engaging story. I love the bears. As the author takes us deeper into the Psy and what is happening to them you see how badly they have damaged themselves. I loved the chemistry between Theo and Yakov. Just a heads up it ends on a cliffhanger. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I love the ongoing saga of the Psy-Changeling series and was happy to see Theo be the main character in this book. Theo is stronger than anyone thinks and learning more of her history was as interesting as it was heart-breaking, but having her mate be a bear was perfect! I loved Yakov and how he really saw Theo. Their relationship was slow-building but appropriate for the storyline. It was also great to have Pavel and Arwen as a secondary couple, and seeing them settle more into their relationship. Resonance Surge will appeal to all fans of the series.
There are only a few authors who can make me want to stick with a long running series at the moment and Singh’s, front and center. I love her characters, I find her world building fascinating, and I enjoy her humor. Resonance Surge features the StoneWater Bears and the Psy Marshall and Mercant families. We find Theo Marshall on a mission for her twin brother to investigate an off the books “rehabilitation” Center outside of Moscow where—in previous times Psy were likely crippled and experimented on. Her guide/partner is a local Stonewater lieutenant, Yakov Stepyrev. A descendent of Bears and Foreseeing Psy, Yasha has been unknowingly dreaming of Theo for years, so meeting her is both a shock and a delight. Their investigation is a high stake, the romance well done… and anyone interested in Pavel and Arwen’s story should definitely check this out.
Gotta be honest, this is not my favorite book in the series. I didn't care about the two main characters at all, because their romance was really underwritten. I would have been very happy to read more about the sibling relationship between Theo and Pax instead. I also really wish that the books would start solving problems instead of just creating more for these poor people. And yet, I read the whole thing in 2 days, so what do I know? I can't imagine myself rereading this, but I'll almost certainly jump at the chance to read the next one.
Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars - This was a very relationship forward book, and considering we're back with the bears and that the side romance was Pavel & Arwen, I have no complaints on that score! I really enjoyed the slow build of tension between Yasha & Theo, and also finding out more about the Marshall family & how they factor into the politics. That said, coming down from the high of macro=plot in the last book, I was bummed we didn't have more about the Island, the Psy-Net situation, etc. There were a lot of little seeds, but I wish we'd had more of it. Still, I am satisfied with my yearly P-C fix and I cannot wait to find out more about WTF is going on
This was a bit more like the early Singh books, an improvement over the last 1-2 books which have been a bit weaker.
Coming down from the high reading a new Psy-Changeling book and remembering that it’ll be a year or more before I get another is…honestly, it’s a #FirstWorldProblem, but it’s also such a bummer. Because I love this series so much and because I have questions.
So. Many. Questions. Ranging from Where the heck is this all leading?—which is a broad question, I know, but I don’t want to spoil anything by asking for specifics—to Isn’t it time for a new anthology of novellas for this series?. Which, to be fair, seems reasonable given that it’s been years since Wild Embrace (and I desperately want to see a post-Silence Tazia and Stefan).
But, in lieu of answers to those questions and a million others besides, I’ll settle for a re-read so I can mine Resonance Surge for clues, callbacks, and new favorite moments, like bearish insults and cleverly named book clubs and those “Wild Woman” excerpts that always bring levity to this uncertain but incredibly built world of Psy, Changelings, and Humans. I have no doubt I’ll find all that and more in a second read-through of this book since I spent the first in raptures of delight at being back in Denhome with the bears and up in my feels as the broken, bent, and bruised tried to find their footing in a new world.
For those looking forward to this book, I encourage you to savor your first dance with Theo and Yakov, Pavel and Arwen—especially the latter pairing, to who I know I have grown very attached. Because as much as it pains me to know another Psy-Changeling book is months and months away, I don’t regret reading this one ASAP after it landed on my Kindle. One, because it was smartly written and added another layer to the ongoing saga of the PsyNet, and two, because it was just plain fun to read. To revisit old friends and make new ones and learn more about characters we’ve met before and ones who’ve appeared for the first time. And, most importantly, to speculate and share theories with my book-reading bestie about what the future holds.
Now, I wonder how many times I can re-read this in a year?!
Theodora Marshal, is low-gradient Psy, and the only person her twin can trust enough to go investigate a hidden family secret. Pax Marshal just uncovered an unregistered rehabilitation center established by their grandfather... that is still siphoning money. Located in StoneWater territory, Theodora is assigned to Yakov Stepyrev. When you turn over rocks, it's surprising nightmares what skitter away.
Why I started this book: Singh has a unique ability to maintain a detailed and interesting overarching story arc while bringing new couples to the forefront for their individual love story. I'm always eager to read more of her stories.
Why I finished it: StoneWater bears are my new favorite... right up there with all my old favorites. This was another delightful addition to Singh's Psy-Changeling series. It flows so seamlessly that I needed to go back and reread the whole series. Magic indeed!
Loved being back in this world. This was five stars for me. Slightly slower start but when it picked up, definitely kept me engaged all throughout. It
Going into this book, I wasn't sure how heart wringing it would be. I know I'm in for intense emotions with Nalini Singh's writing. The balance here of the poignancy of fate, of choices made, with the developing romance between Theo and Yakov was perfect. Their romance built up so nicely and they worked so well together. It helps the equilibrium with the suspense part of the story as they investigate what happened to the rehabilitation centre that was controlled by Theo's grandfather - and that she can remember in flashes.
Pavel and Arwen's story began in Silver Silence, and they're now an established couples with Arwen being cautious about the mating bond because he's not feeling worthy enough. Their short scenes throughout the book are largely sweet and it's great to see them so happy together.
Resonance Surge is a definite winner for me and one I will be happily rereading. I think Psy-Changeling fans will really like this pairing; Theo is much less enmeshed in Silence than other M/Cs and open to enjoying more, exploring more of the world. She definitely found the perfect bear for her.
