“You’ve Been Served” by Kristen Alicia is an entertaining romcom set in which a California chef quits her job and enrolls in law school in Michigan. I received a copy of the book from NetGalley, but the review is my own.
I enjoyed the main couple and cast of secondary characters a lot (I’d like to see a book about Simone’s friends River and Tiffany!). I thought Silas was a great male lead – he is a mature adult, complicated, assertive, and sexy.
The story takes place mostly over the first year of school, and it was not a slow-burn per se, but a realistic development of two people who are friends, attracted to each other, managing school and personal relationships. Some romcoms feel more like YA novels than complex stories for adults, but this book had that perfect balance of funny and sophisticated.
My only real concern was that law school almost became a character itself in the story, that drove a lot of the plot points. Sometimes I was not sure this worked very well, such as the difficult law professor who likes to intimidate students in class; this crushes Simone’s confidence, but as someone who worked in professional kitchens before going back to school, I kept thinking that she would have faced way more intense pressure in that environment than at school and should have been a bit hardened.
I also wonder whether some law school details were a bit too “inside baseball” for the average reader. As a lawyer, I could easily relate to these details - and they certainly weren’t overwhelming enough to make the story inaccessible to someone who did not attend law school - but I couldn’t separate my own experience to know what a non-lawyer would think of these details.
Overall, the writing was very good, and it was a polished debut novel that suggests the author should have a long, successful career in a competitive genre. 3.5/5
This book is definitely a oooh that cover is cute *requests with no further information* book for me. I ended up enjoying it. A good romantic comedy. Not an omg I loved it but definitely good!
I really loved this book! It was super unique in the way that the characters have other goals and ambitions besides being together. I love it when authors give us the characters ambitions and desires outside of a relationship. There weren't too many characters to keep up with and it had great comedic tones. Love it!
A big thank you to Netgalley, Entangled Publishing and of course Kristen Alicia for giving me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this was a quirky debut novel from Kristen and loved the light-hearted banter between the two MC’s. There is comedy and romance intertwined that deals with law school and magic eight balls. A fun and fast read I look forward to the next one Kristen 😊
Cute and intelligent. I loved the diversity and I want more books like this. Kristen Alicia is an author I will be looking out for in the future. Highly recommended for those who like their romance with a bit of humor and good banter.
Entangled Publishing, LLC and NetGalley provided an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed here are solely my own.
I am a HUGE Black romance book fan and I loved Legally Blonde so I was excited to dive into this book. Unfortunately, that excitement didn’t last. There was a lot of detail about in the book about the law classes, ice cream flavors, the lack of good produce at the neighborhood grocery store - but not enough detail about why the main characters were drawn to each other.
Book boyfriend - check, cute funny moments - check, love story you wish would happen to you - check. Romantic comedy perfection - check check! Silas Whitman is clearly the dream man, if only he was real.
Silas and Simone… the power couple I never knew I needed. Both in law school figuring out this crazy thing we call life. Boyyyy do they have chemistry. So this is a closed door in terms of spice but let me tell you that’s not a problem. You can feel the anticipation and the angst. Some really really good writing! You will fall in love with them just like I have. Comes out June 27th!

I'm sorry but I can't push my self into pain
It was boring.. the writing is fine but i feel like over detailed (?)
I don't really like the FMC tbh, i dont know why.
So, yah. Maybe while this book didn't work for me, maybe its work for you.
Solid Read - This story was enjoyable for a good portion of the book. I did have a couple of concerns throughout regarding the level of adulting for Simone. The story and characters grew on me as the maturity levels increased and the relationship developed. I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This one was such a fun, quick read!! A drastic career switch leading to true love?!! Definitely sign me up!!
Thank you for my advance copy, NetGalley.
Simone makes a snap decision to join law school after quitting a job in career she thought she would be in forever. She moves across country and has to face a bunch of challenges; law school, hard professors and maybe love?
I liked the characters and could relate heavily to all of the ups and downs of studying law. I felt that perhaps at times there was a bit too much describing but otherwise it was an enjoyable story.
It definitely felt like the author was preparing for more stories with other characters like Tiffany and River which was a little distracting at times.
Overall I would give this book a 3/5
The author does a great job of depicting the grueling nature of law school, with its intense workload, competitive environment, and demanding professors. However, she balances the seriousness of the academic setting with the fun and heartwarming moments that make this book a delightful and entertaining read.
Overall, You've Been Served is a fun and engaging rom-com that will leave you feeling satisfied and rooting for Simone to achieve her dreams, both in law school and in love.
You've Been Served (which is a perfect book title) is about Simone, who decides to go to law school after consulting a magic 8-ball about her future. You know, as we all do. We follow her through her first year at school, that is filled with overachieving students, tough professors and cute boys (obviously) to occupy her time.
Overall, this was a very cute story. I loved the law school setting, and was so happy that there was a lot of focus on surviving in such a tough environment. This is more of an "finding yourself" story than just a romance, which I appreciated. I also liked the romance a lot, though I didn't quite understand why they just couldn't be together from the first page, when it was painfully obvious that they should have been.
Didn't love the writing at first, with there for example being too many descriptions of what everyone was wearing (reminding me of those Wattpad fanfictions), but both the writing and the pace improved a lot after a while.
Definitely agree that this is perfect for fans of Legally Blonde!
Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for giving me an ARC in exchange of an honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 stars…A very cute romance. Some positives: the characters were nice, the banter cute, no huge misunderstandings that separate the mc’s, and good secondary characters. There were a couple of times I thought Simone was a bit irrational, but then I thought, isn’t this kind of how we get sometimes when it comes to relationships? Luckily her pity party didn’t last long. Silas was a good guy and probably the character I liked most. This was an entertaining read although it did start out a bit slow for me and took me a bit to get into. Could have been me though and the frame of mind I was in. Overall, I liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a clean, fun, entertaining, romance whose characters aren’t problematic. I just wish Simone, Daniel, or Silas would have given Lauren a piece of their mind a bit more emphatically and put her in her place!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher/author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is really fun for fans of legally blonde.
Silas is such a loveable character, I enjoyed him really much.
Simone showed that anyone can get what they want if they put in the work.
Their relationship kept me on my toes and their banter was really fun.
I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.
You’ve Been Served was such a cute rom-com. The characters was so cute and I loved the genuine connections. I loved the plot of the story and how the romance grew.

This book covers the first year of law student Simone. She was a chef in another life and decided to change things up. Even though her grades to get in were excellent law school turns out to be a bigger challenge than she expected. On her first day she meets the cute law student Silas. But he interrupted her in class. They certainly have sparks but good one or bad ones?
I felt like the story only started when the book was finished. I was just getting into it and then it was over. I really like the hard ass professor. It reminded me of my college days! The studying hard, the examens and the going out. The book maybe focuses a bit more on studying than I did ;) the book captured the college experience tho! A different read for me and I quite liked it!

Love the banter. A realistic look into what law school looks like. Love the premise of start over when your life no longer serves you. A cute read.
I received a copy of this in exchange for a review from netgalley. Rated this a 3.75 rounded up to 4 stars.
As a law school grad who thankfully doesn’t practice law anymore, this got a little too real sometimes. It definitely brought back memories of feeling utterly overwhelmed and unprepared and out of my depth in school, although, like Simone, I found good friends while I was there.
I didn’t like Simone at first. I was mad cause who decides to go to law school based on a Magic 8 ball, and then doesn’t do anything you’re supposed to do to get ready for law school - doesn’t even check her email. I could not understand that. But I learned to like her as the book went on and you see her interact with her friends, professors, and family more.
I was also not a fan of Silas at the beginning - I hated gunners in law school and I don’t like them in books much either it seems, but as Simone got to know him more, I also started to like him, and liked them as a couple.
