I really enjoyed the book that served as the ground work for this adaptation, so of course picking this up was a no brainer. The book has a lot of narration; I was curious to see how that'd work in a gn style. I've got to say... A+ work in this case. So much of this graphic novel is word for word from the book; it's a very faithful adaption.

The artwork is incredible. The dusk and dawn colors are rich and smokey and vibrant and just perfection; it's not the color palette I would have chosen, and that's absolutely brilliant!

Overall, a really great adaptation but the artwork creates a new world all its own.

I’ll start with the good. The story concept is super strong, as is what we see of the characters. I say what we see because I’m willing to bet there’s more depth to each of them in the novel. I also really enjoyed the art and the character design, and I think that it complements the story quite well. There were several moments that were so fantastic, they almost made me forget what I disliked.
Now for the bad. I was genuinely shocked to see that it was edited by someone with such a prolific career as a comic book editor, as, to me, I could immediately see the faults in the adaptation. There wasn’t enough background given for almost anything, but I can tell from the way the story is structured that it was there originally. Plus, I think the ending falls flat with all the cut context.

I think there’s definitely an audience for this book. Probably a video gamer, reality tv watching, horror movie fan, type older teen. This reads just like a video game, only drawn. I do think it should be aimed at older teens, as there’s a lot of violence (murder, suicide) as well as quite a few f-words. I don’t have an issue with any of that, but think it should be clearly stated in reviews. It got a little confusing keeping track of all the characters names and back stories. There’s character pages in the back of the review copy, those will useful for readers. The colors are great and then the story starts strong, but then descends into chaos.

I was a little skeptical when I saw that "Hide" by Kiersten White was being adapted into a graphic novel, but also incredibly intrigued because I thought the original book just didn't work in the format that the story was presented in. I actually had it listed as one of my least favorite books of 2022, but I really wanted to give the graphic novel a chance because one of my biggest complaints about the original novel was the lack of imagery. I wanted to feel like I was in a run-down amusement park, but it just wasn't described enough in the novel.

Well this graphic novel definitely added that much needed layer for the plot. The artwork was absolutely stunning and perfect for the tone of the book. Tt has a grittiness to it that makes you uncomfortable, but in the best way since this is supposed horror. I loved the book pages as well. It was so cool to read the entries as if we were actually reading the journals presented in the story. I also love that the dates in the journal seem to have been changed to coincide with the publication date of the graphic novel. A neat little touch.

Unfortunately a lot of the plot still didn't work great for me, but this did elevate my feelings in general. My biggest disappointment with the graphic novel was the portrayal of the monster. It's completely different than the book and lacks any type of scare factor. It's almost beautiful and it didn't seem like that was what the story was going for. It seems to me like the actual monster should have been more horrifying/gruesome compared to beautiful to look at.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced e-copy of the book in exchange for my honest review!

Funny story, I was reading Hide (the novel) by Kiersten White when my request for its graphic novel was granted. And I decided to read both of them simultaneously to be able to compare the two. Which is why, even though I have about fifty pages left in the actual novel, I am able to say that the graphic novel does bring a little something more. A little thrill.
I really enjoyed the story, though I feel like it could have been better and I did not find it scary, which is kind of disappointing for a horror story. But I did have fun, especially with this graphic novel. It was really pleasant and such a quick read. It did give the story some life and erased some of the distance that I felt towards the characters while reading the novel. Also, I loved the art for Hide which was so colorful. It was definitely a plus.
I'll recommend reading Hide the graphic novel if you felt like the novel was 'too much on the surface'. This format definitely worked better.

Book: Hide: The Graphic Novel
Genre: Adult horror/thriller
Release Date: September 12, 2023
Rating: 4/5

The graphic novel adaptation of Hide by Kiersten White exceeded my expectations! I read the original novel last year and rated it 4 stars. I also rated the graphic novel 4 stars, but for different reasons.

Overall, I think the adaptation was done pretty well. A lot of major scenes from the book are included and I think the illustrations really contribute to the feel of the story. I feel like some of the minor characters were a little more difficult to keep track of in the graphic novel because they appeared so briefly, but that’s not a huge issue. My main complaint about this adaptation is the way the journal entries were included. I wish the text on those entries had been a little larger and that they were split up a little bit with more illustrations, BUT they were a fun addition to the story.

My final rating is 4/5 and I would definitely recommend this graphic novel to fans of the original novel.

Hide is a story of an ultimate game of Hide and Seek and is based on the author’s novel of the same name. The artwork was excellent and the story kept me interested in finding out what happens next. The narration seemed a little off at times, leaving the POV confusing. Was it inner dialogue spoken or an omniscient narrator? That tiny critique will not sway me from seeking out the original source material. Three out of five stars.

I read the novel version of this story last year. It was one of my anticipated reads, but it was such a disappointment. I decided to request the graphic novel version on NetGalley, and while the story was the same, the illustrations added a better experience to it.

It was a bit difficult to read the words on the NetGalley app, but the artwork was beautifully done. There were also a lot of gory kills.

I do definitely think the graphic novel version is the best way to read this book. The illustrations add so much more meaning to the story.

Thank you so much NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy in exchange for my honest review!

This was okay. I read the original novel a while back and loved it so I wanted to give the graphic novel adaptation a try. I didn't like it as much as the original. It was still a good read though. I really enjoyed the color scheme and seeing the characters come to life.

This is the graphic novel adaptation of Kiesten White's novel Hide, a book I kept browsing for and yet couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger reading because of the mixed reviews from my friends who read it. I think their criticisms the book, like confusing POVS, lack of character depth for a wide cast of characters, pacing issues, etc are absent in the comic adaptation. It's obvious this was a tight adaptation, not the least because of the graphic novel medium. The main characters feel fleshed out, and we get to know just enough about the side characters to feel a little bad when they inevitably die. The backstory was intriguing as well, with the hint of cosmic horror.

I do think it could have done with a bit more mystery to build the suspense, but it was still overall a very enjoyable read. The art, while nothing to write home about, was also decent. The whole time I was thinking how this would be a great tv show on a platform where they could go gory, because the whole time I was also thinking, "this is House on Haunted Hill in an amusement park with teenagers!" (I initially expected it to turn out more like The Hunger Games, which is kind of starts out as, but it is definitely more House of Haunted Hill (1999)!)

Not a bad couple hours to spend the day and I'll definitely recommend it as a horror comic worth checking out!

I really didn’t enjoy this graphic novel, so I didn’t finish it. 😅 I hate dnfing a book, but I just couldn’t get into this one.

This was an excellent graphic rendition of the original novel. I loved the way the art gives so much to the story. Being able to see each character was really fun too, since this is game show type setting. Mack and a group of other teens/young adults are recruited for a game of hide and seek inside a defunct amusement park. As the game begins the contestants start to unravel the sinister reasons this ‘game’ exists. This was very intense and did a great job of using a longer text piece to fully explain some of the story.

I wanted to read the graphic novel as I read the original last year and enjoyed it immensely. Sometimes graphic novel versions can be a hit or a miss...this one was a hit! Fantastic artwork and the writing was perfectly formatted. This can easily be read alone or great as a companion to the original itself. The premise of 14 people competing to win $50,000 with a game of hide and seek at an abandoned theme park is fantastic. The art really helps fill in the gaps and imagination if you have read the original novel.. All the characters are fully realized, even the ones who are not the main characters. I highly recommend this graphic novel! I had a blast from start to finish!

Although I wouldn’t recommend this to any YOUNG readers, as far as teens go and adults, this is a beautifully illustrated romp into a dark and mysterious world where you can’t trust anyone..especially those related to you by Blood. Enigmatic Mack has a dark past she wishes to forget but can’t, and let’s no one close, until she finds herself drawn into a competition that is a high stakes game of hide and seek, possibly the premise for a new reality show, that promises a large amount of prize money and a chance to disappear into a new life. After all, Mack only wants to disappear, to be invisible, so what better way than to start than by hiding her way into a nest egg to start over? She and thirteen other contestants as left at a condemned and crumbling amusement park, which just adds to the atmosphere of this already twisted tale, where’re every day they are to hide until sunset from what they assume to be camera men seeking them out to eliminate them, but they never dreamed of the menacing force that is in fact stalking them through broken down rides and attractions, sniffing them out, or that they have been selected specifically to enter the park, but never leave. As Mack makes unlikely friendships with kind Brandon, bold, fiery Ava, and withdrawn Lagrand, she spirals closer to the truth, and with it, must face her own past. I greatly enjoyed this retelling of any already taunt and thrilling book now with faces to fully place to each character, and once again I am delighted at Kiersten Whites immense talent for storytelling. This is what horror is meant to be. Tragic, with bright moments of humor and companionship, unexpected acts of bravery, characters you root for and mourn and others you despise, wickedly unstoppable villains and terrifying monsters. All in all, a perfect story.

After reading (and listening to) the bestselling, Hide by author, Kiersten White last year, I was excited when I saw there was going to be a graphic novel version released. It was nerve-wracking to see some of those scenes play out somewhere than just in my imagination. I loved the artists style and how they managed to make it feel just as tense, chilling and foreboding reading it as a graphic novel as it did listening to it as an audiobook. There were some issues with the quality of the copy I had which made it difficult to make out some of the words but that didn’t stop it being an excellent read. I’m looking forward to reading Kiersten’s next release.

When I saw that the book was being developed into a graphic novel I might have screamed and spun around in a circle and it's worth every ounce of excitement I had.

When I say I loved Hide I mean I loved it, the story, the characters, the setting, it was one of those books that stayed with me, made me buy a physical copy to annotate, and kept looking for news about it. The graphic novel took it to another level and gave me so much more of an experience.

As someone that's not big on graphic novels... (let's face it this is only my 8th) I was obsessed with this one, once I started it I couldn't put it down. The imagery is amazing and I couldn't believe how many of the images were exactly what I had pictured.

Now let's talk about the actual story for just a moment, 14 people, all with something to prove competing in the ultimate game of hide and seek for a grand prize of $50,000 for the one person that makes it out.

Mack has survived more than her fair share of trauma so when the opportunity presents itself she can't help but go for it, the thought of being able to get away and become someone new, it's just too good to pass up, and just like Mack all of our characters have something they're running from or to and that's what makes them perfect "Contestants". I won't give anything about the ending away, I'll just say trust your gut when certain characters make an appearance.

Scott Peterson, Veronica Fish, and Andy Fish I have to say thank you for bringing one of my favorite books to such a vibrant and visually gratifying version, I had very high hopes for this one and you exceeded all of them.

Now normally I'd do some reel or graphic but this cover is just everything and I'll leave it at that.

Thank you to NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for providing an advance copy of this graphic novel, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was an absolutely beautiful graphic novel adaptation. The Art style was reminiscent of the original episode of scooby doo which is perfect. 10/10 an excellent companion to the novel.

This was such a great graphic novel! I really enjoyed the plot, and I liked how we got a bit of every contestant's POV. I thought the plot twist with the park background was super creepy, and I liked the tie-in of the journals. Regarding the artwork, I wish the font was different, because it was really hard to decipher on my kobo. Other than that, this was a great read ☺️

Many thanks to Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for the arc of this graphic novel by Kiersten White. I highly recommend viewing this graphic novel after reading the book Hide. I really enjoyed being able to see images of the book. I am going to share this graphic novel with my teens I think they are going to love it. Illustrations are dark which complement the storyline. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to NetGalley, Clarkson Potter, Ten Speed Press, Kiersten White, Scott Peterson (adaptation writer), and Veronica and Andy Fish (illistrators) for the opportunity to read Hide: The Graphic Novel in exchange for an honest review.

I own and have read most of Kiersten White's work. Though I do have a copy of Hide, I haven't read it yet, so I was hoping the graphic novel adaptation would get me hyped to bump it up a bit sooner on my list.

The art is good, giving the characters their own unique details, and be warned, as there are some mildly graphic death images. This novel features Mack, whose family was murdered, so why not join this amusement park survival event for $50k? She, among the other contestants, learn a dark secret to the amuzement park's past. Two must die each day until one remains. But why?

The only aspect I didn't like was the info dumps about the park's hostory and the monster, as it was a lot of text for one page when youa re seeking the lighter density of words in a graphic novel. Otherwise, this is an interesting horror thriller. While not as heart-pounding or fast-paced as I expected, the adaptation was done well and I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel.
