i recently read the original book and immediately read the graphic novel after and i think they did a really good job adapting it! it is a very cool setting so it was neat to be able to visualize the park in the graphic novel
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Hide: The Graphic Novel by Kiersten White in exchange for an honest review. I had already read this book, but was interested to read a graphic version of it as it's neat to get to see how others see things. I really liked it and felt it added another dimension to an already great and spooky story.
Actual rating 4.5/5 stars.
$50,000. That is the sum that could be Mack's if she competes against thirteen other individuals on staying hidden inside an amusement park for seven full days. She excels at staying hidden and has been doing so her entire life, since the time the rest of her family were taken from her, and sees no reason why she should fail at doing so now. When contestants begin to disappear and tragedy strikes those remaining, it is seeking that Mack must learn to be equally good at, if she is to discover what is really occurring and make it out alive.
I'd wanted to read the full-length novel this graphic adaptation is based on since its release but I hadn't yet gotten around to doing so. I'm not sure if I'll return to it as, in my opinion, this media seemed like the perfect way in which to tell this horrifying tale.
The colours were vibrant and each panel gave the feel of an amusement park, despite its disuse and disrepair. This novel felt lively and exciting and as events became distinctly less so, the panels followed suit.
Mack was a wonderful insight to the horrors occurring but other perspectives were also included so the reader had a full picture of events before most of the characters did. I thought this a great choice, as it added tension, but did not sacrifice intrigue, as enough remained unknown to both characters and reader alike until the final quarter.
There were many sweet moments to compensate for the terrifying ones and it showed how closely I had bonded with the varied central characters with just how much I rooted for them all in equal measure. A happy ending could never be guaranteed for all and bittersweet and mixed emotions dogged me for much of this. The ending had me hoping for a little more but was still a satisfactory conclusion to a stellar story.
I haven't read the original book, but my experience with Hide was excellent! The arts are very beautiful and I loved the atmosphere of suspense that was established, the background of the amusement park is very cool and helped to build the story a lot, I loved the end of the graphic novel too, I could not imagine another. My only problem was that I couldn't generate much connection with the characters, because there were so many characters. Thanks to NetGalley and the author for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review!
I have read other books by the author and liked them. I didn't get a chance to read the book for this graphic novel, so I looked forward to reading this.
The author creates interesting characters that help to move the story along. The story and location are creepy. The story starts off like any other reality/survival show and then quickly turns much sinister.
Once you start reading this graphic novel, it's hard to put down. This one does not disappoint. Horror fans will enjoy this one.
It isn’t just a friendly competition, not that the organizers are making it seem too friendly to begin. But something sinister is out there, lurking in the depths of the labyrinth that is the abandoned amazement park. It’s out for blood, and the supposed contestants are trapped. Why are they here, and how can they survive something they can’t see? A modern monster horror in the classic style featuring a host of characters from all walks of life. Equal parts horror flick and social commentary, a monster Fic that will make you question.
Thank you to NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for the opportunity to read rage and review this graphic novel which is available for purchase Sept 12,2023
Okay first off let’s talk about the art style. It’s old school Archie style which I freaking love. Art work is fabulous. 10/5 stars. Veronica Fish did an epic job.
This is a book about a high stakes hide and seek competition in an abandoned amusement park. 50 grand is at stake. 14 competitors and 7 days from Dawn to Dusk of the most intense hide and seek game ever to be played. Then people start to disappear one by one.
Mack is the main character. Her story broke me. It is fast paced, spine tingling and a thrilling ride.
Hide: The Graphic Novel is, like the title describes, a graphic novel version of Keirsten White’s book, Hide, which I adored last year. The basic premise of this is 14 people are chosen to compete in a reality show playing Hide and Seek for a cash grand prize. Taking place in an abandoned amusement park, suspicions rise when the “losing” competitors disappear without a trace.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel version of this book. I think seeing the story in full color illustrations added an extra layer that was really interesting. This is such a fun, campy story that plays out like a movie. I will definitely be picking up this graphic novel when it comes out!
I tried this on multiple devices and platforms and the speech text was so blurry it was very difficult to read. Even zooming in just made it pixelated rather than clear.
The illustrations were pretty good, very old school 80s style comic book art. Reminded me of old superman comics.
The chosen narration was dull though, it felt more like an over-arching stream of consciousness rather than a coherent storyline.
The plot was interesting in a Cabin in the Woods meets Total Drama island. But obviously you couldn't get as much detail in the graphic novel format as in a whole novel. I think that is why I didn't resonates with any of the characters or their motivations.
Squinting to make out the words plus the need for internal voices to aid in character growth means this was just an ok read.
I really enjoyed Hide: The Graphic Novel by Kiersten White. If you were asked to spend a week in an abandoned amusement park and not get caught, would you? How about for $50,000? That was the challenge the characters of this book were up against. Let the mayhem begin. This book held my attention from start to finish. I finished it in one sitting. Set within one of my favorite tropes (horror or mysterious elements surrounding an amusement park) this graphic novel elevated the storyline with its stunning full-color and beautiful layout. I also enjoyed the actual novel this graphic novel is based on by White and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read the graphic novel version.
I received a review copy of this book from the author/publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Not a fan of this as a graphic novel. I was bored most of the time and didn''t like the graphics. Also it's definitely more adult than young adult so it would fit best in a high school or public library.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this graphic novel.
To be completely honest, I purchased and read Hide (the actual novel) and I think I rated it either a low two stars or maybe even one star. I thought that the synopsis sounded promising, but the story itself just didn't work for me. With that being said, I actually think that this worked MUCH better in this format. It made the story more interesting and was nice to be able to visualize the large cast of characters, even if we didn't spend much time with them. I felt like it came across as less gimmicky and made it more of a horror whereas the actual novel had a hard time deciding if it wanted to be a horror or a fantasy or even like a slasher- which in my humble opinion, it didn't execute any of those genres particularly well.
This may just be a me issue because I am unused to reading graphic novels digitally, but I found the text rather blurry and kind of hard to read at times. Again, that likely could be user error, but even on my iPad, and occasionally zooming in, some words were illegible.
I would definitely recommend picking this up if you like paranormal horror and maybe even if Hide in this novel format wasn't for you. This was definitely an improvement and I actually plan on ordering this to have on my shelf now after unhauling the novel.
This is a graphic novel adaption of the novel Hide by the same author, which is basically Squid Game in an amusement park. It isn't the most creative concept, but it had potential to be outside of the box. Unfortunately, I think it felt flat. While the art style is lovely (shoutout to the illustrators), the story is dull and formulaic. It twists and turns itself, ironically, into a straight line where the story is predicted from the first ten pages after the reader is forcefully spoon fed just-vague-enough backstory. I also found the narration confusing.
Note: the quality of this digital ARC was poor both on mobile and computer, making it a struggle to read at times.
I want to preface this review by saying I haven't read the novel this is based on, so my opinions are seperate from any differences there might be from that.
I actually was expecting something different to this when I went into it, some more horror and less adventure. Not that there isn't horror and gore of course, and the monster too, but it wasn't what I expected.
Overall the story is pretty solid, there's enough character building for you to pick sides and have favourites, and the plot is good. There's tension, there's twists, there's excitement, there's shocks. I enjoyed this a lot! Although I didn't enjoy the ending at all, there wasn't really a conclusion which was hugely disappointing, but maybe that's the point. Again maybe I need to read the novel, maybe it's different, but from just this it wasn't a great ending.
The art was gorgeous, bright and colourful. Maybe could have had some changes to the layout, there was just a lot of yellow commentary boxes through most of it. But overall amazing.
In short, a solid plot, some great art, semi-ruined by a not so great ending.

I don't read too many graphic novels, but I really enjoyed Hide the novel and wanted to see how it translated over. I was not disappointed, this was great! So much color, getting to see each character come to life and the game play out was a lot of fun.
If you enjoy paranormal horror, this is definitely something to check out. It's fast paced and interesting, with characters you'll care about and a plot that will draw you in.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Ten Speed Press and NetGalley for the copy.
This was such a cool idea. I loved this book so much more as a graphic novel. The huge downside is that it was so blurry and pixilated in the Netgalley shelf app that I could barely read it. It’s such a huge disappointment.
Kiersten White is back at it with this graphic novel adaptation of her recent adult fiction release, Hide. You follow a group of 14 unsuspecting people who have been invited to a game of Hide and Seek, with the pretense that the winner will leave with $50,000. These are all people of different avenues and walks of life and the area in which they are to hide? - a dilapidated amusement park in the middle of nowhere. The main person in which you follow (although you hear and see other stories throughout, but in lesser detail), is Mack, whose past is forever marred by the game Hide and Seek, a trauma that she cannot get past. The story takes a sinister turn when they begin to hear screams when someone gets out. What could be happening to those that are caught? Is there a serial killer on the loose? or is it something much more sinister at work? It was an incredible read, the artistry was done well, and I especially enjoyed the detailing of the journal pages. I highly recommend for order if you don't own a copy of the novel, but even if you don't, get it anyway.
I think that this story works so well as a graphic novel. I know a lot of people felt that the story fell a little flat in its original format - if you were one of those people, I highly recommend trying this instead. The illustrations were gorgeous, and I felt that they breathed new life into characters I had already met and formed an opinion on. I still think this is an incredibly creative story and one that I truly enjoyed witnessing unfold.
This had such great premise and artwork but was brought down HEAVILY by the readability of the font. Everything was so blurry--even when I enlarged the text and zoomed in--it was hard to make sense of what was going on. I pushed through as best I could, but in the end, there was so much going on with so many characters and even though the artwork was great, I could not make sense of the story. So I bought the ebook. DIsappointing. Hopefully this gets resolved in the final edit of the graphic novel.
I’ll be honest, I’ve never read the source material/book that this graphic novel is based on. I probably won’t considering I read this and now know exactly what happens. It reminded me a little bit of the tv show Haven, with the whole cycle thing.
The art was really cool but the text was extremely hard to read, even on my iPad.
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
