Decent cookbook; not my most favorite, but there's something in here for everyone. Photographs were nice, and the recipes were easy to follow.
This is a wonderful collection of recipes. I always know I will love a cookbook when I mark recipes on the initial look through. I love the short recipe lead in so we can get right to the recipes. The ingredients are easy to find and are in most bakers' pantries. I can see myself using this cookbook quite often.
Thank you NetGalley for this book in exchange for an honest review.
This cookbook is filled with many wonderful recipes along with delicious looking pictures. A great way to learn to make new foods you wouldn’t normally try.
Overall, I enjoyed reading Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy. There are lovely stories and mouth-watering pictures throughout. Most recipes are easy to make and don’t make a lot of mess. And who doesn’t love that when it comes to baking? I know, for me, washing up after baking is the worst possible task!
The book has five wonderful chapters, all of which you would expect to find in any cookbook that focuses on baking.
While I enjoyed reading the book, I struggled to find recipes to try. Why? There are so many that contain nuts, and as I’ve mentioned before, someone in my household has a nut allergy. The one recipe I managed to make was the Chocolate Chip and Pretzel cookies. In the cookbook, they are designed to be ice cream sandwiches, but they didn’t last long enough for that to happen! They were so successful that my daughter asked me when I was making them again.
Other recipes that piqued my interest were Lemon and Vanilla Bean Posset, Snickerdoodle Bars, and the Chocolate Orange Flourless Cake.
If you are looking for an easy-to-follow cookbook that doesn’t dirty every dish in your kitchen, then you should give Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy a read. There are recipes here for beginners and seasoned bakers alike.
An absolute gem of a cookbook that I'll definitely be recommending to anyone getting into baking. It's no fuss, easy access, often one bowl recipes that makes baking a real joy!
Loved!
What an AMAZING cookbook filled with delicious and easy to make goodies. I cannot wait to try the apricot chocolate oatmeal cookies, hummingbird oatmeal cookies, yellow sheet cake with chocolate fudge frosting, walnut frosties and so many more. The recipes are easy to follow with clear instructions. Pictures of the finished item accompany most recipes.
If you love to bake delicious treats then be sure to pick up this cookbook.
Thanks to the author and publisher for the e-arc I received in exchange for my honest review via NetGalley.
What a fantastic cookbook. I made a couple of the bread recipes in the book. Such easy, simple recipes anyone can make!
I was really surprised at this book. Some of the recipes were good, but honestly nothing that I would buy the book for.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
A beautiful cookbook full of not only gorgeous recipes for all kinds of sweet treats, but filled with Danielle's heart through her words and stories. I've cooked many of her recipes over the years and am sure our family will find many favorites in this one as well!

Danielle Kartes is a master at writing books with simple, easy to master recipes that elevate old favorites with some new ingredients and twists (hello Nutella Banana Cake). This book would be a great addition to any bakers’ kitchen and would also make a wonderful gift. The photography is beautiful, too!
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for this ARC.
The recipes are very simple, no complex ingredients or methods, and I love that she has a picture of almost every recipe. I’m that weird breed of human that will actually read a cookbook like a novel and I enjoyed reading her stories with each recipe.
Most of the recipes are your everyday recipes: chocolate chip cookies, zucchini bread, yellow cake with chocolate frosting, etc. If you’re looking for a cookbook that has baking classics along with a handful of spins on old recipes or new altogether, this is the cookbook for you.
It’s the season for baking, so why not another cookbook review.
With a nice size collection of recipes to try, and with ingredients that are either already in your kitchen or at least easy to find, “BUTTER, FLOUR, SUGAR, JOY” Offers the perfect option for the hesitant or resistant baker. It is also for the advanced baker with flavor combos that make you want to pick up your mixing bowl.
Thank you Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS (NF) for the book copy.

I have started enjoying cooking and baking. I find them very therapeutic. But I had been wanting to up my baking game for quite some time and this book came in time.
It has some lovely and easy recipes. I can't wait to try them all!
And Chocolate, Lemon, Ginger , Cherry!
There is a lot of love in this book. Danielle Kartes is an exhausted business owner, mom and wife. But she still finds time to bake, and wants her readers to enjoy the small pleasure of a mid-week cake or cookie. The recipes are classic, simple, and easy to read. It turns out that I didn't have a lot of time myself for baking while I was reviewing this book, but I did sneak in a pan of Classic Crackle-Top Brownies (a chocolate lover's dream).
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I am a baker, and I was excited by the cover of Danielle Kartes' newest cookbook. It's the Nutella banana bread, and really, how can you go wrong with Nutella banana bread?
Overall, the recipes in the book are solid. There's a whole chapter on puddings, which are often neglected in baking cookbooks. The techniques are outlined well, and nothing is too fussy.
I found the book inconsistent in a few ways. The photography is excellent and luscious, but not every recipe has a picture. If that's part of the selling point, as it seems to be here, then more pictures would be a plus. Secondly, Kartes makes it clear in the book and in her blog that part of her vibe is the stories behind the recipes she's sharing. When she includes those stories in her intro to a recipe, it makes sense, and helps understand why she's included those. Some of the recipes though, don't have that, and go right into recipe, without even a quick intro. Again, it seemed inconsistent.
Finally, while I am a huge fan of personality in my cookbooks (I will read Smitten Kitchen for days!), I felt that this one went heavily into faith and prayer. I am a person of faith, but I'm not necessarily looking for testimonials in my cookbooks, particularly if that's not part of the branding.
Overall, this was a 3 star read for me. If you have someone on your list who's looking for dependable, straightforward recipes for sweets and isn't going to be thrown off by the "God talk", this would be a good choice.
Miigweetch NetGalley and Sourcebooks for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Unfortunately this cookbook just didn’t work for me. It felt like way too much fluff and not enough substance. I only received a sample yet still found myself losing interest even with the abridged material. There was just too much “talking.” I just found it agonizingly boring, and the food photography itself was uninspiring.
I do not recommend this title to anyone. 1 out of 5 stars from me but only because zero is not an option.
If you are a collector of cookbooks such as I am, there are no really NEW recipes here. But this book is different in that ALL the recipes you want to try are all in one place!
In addition, the author gives much advice regarding the baking process such as what shortening to use and at what temperature to start. Types of flour to use and why.
She also tells about her history and how she became a baker of success after years of being a very poor baker..
I highly recommend this book just on the collection of recipes alone. The rest is bonus material.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me this ARC.
This is such an easy to follow and simple ingredient cookbook. I am not much of a baker and I was able to make several recipes. This one will come in handy for quite a while.
Love to bake? Looking for an awesome book with lots of scrumptious ideas? Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy: Simple Sweet Desserts for Everyone (Easy and Delicious Baking Recipes, Simple Cookies, Cakes, Crumbles, and More!)is definitely the book you are looking for. Danielle Kartes is a recipe developer and food stylist, and, along with her photographer husband, has created a fabulous cookbook full of desserts that are irresistible.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions that make them easy to follow for both beginning and advanced bakers. Each recipe is prefaced by comments from the author that include vignettes, history, and/or helpful baking tips. The beginning chapter of the book also has helpful hints for bakers.
One of the best parts of this excellent cookbook is that almost every recipe includes a beautiful, professional photograph. This, of course, make it almost impossible to decide what to make next. The first recipe I made was for Nutella Banana Cake because I had some over-ripe bananas that needed to be used. The end result was moist and delicious, and it was devoured almost immediately. Other recipes in my “must make soon” queue include Walnut Frosties, Peanut Butter and Ganache Cookie Sandwiches, and French Apple Tart. The problem is that every time I peruse the cookbook, my queue gets longer.
All told, anyone who loves to make and bake mouthwatering desserts will want to pick up this excellent cookbook and it will be used often. Highly recommended.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Truly delicious recipes are found in this wonderful cookbook. I find myself wanting the Sticky Toffee pudding all the time! Recommended for any baker.
