I finished Happily Married earlier today. It’s a book of secrets and lies with plenty of twists and turns to keep you enthralled. Gripping and pacy, I found it hard to put down. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
This book had me so gripped I read it in a day, the twists were just amazing, I think the chapters needed to have character names on as it got really confusing.
Thank you to NetGalley & Bookouture for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I will admit the synopsis of this thriller drew me in; Jake and Natalie live and work on the farm she inherited from her parents, but lately things in their marriage haven’t been great. Jake is ignoring her, won’t show any affection to her, and just generally acting strange around her. Natalie knows something with him is off, but can’t figure out what.
With money tight on the farm, Natalie puts out an ad for a renter for extra income, and shortly after Kara moves in. After she moves in strange things begin to happen. And it doesn’t take long before Natalie thinks Jake and Kara are having an affair together.
As things begin to unravel, at around 55% they just came to a shocking turn. And from there on out the twists just became more confusing to keep up with. POV changed in almost every chapter and in the later chapters it was difficult to try and figure out who it was narrating and who they were talking about. Towards the end there was even a chapter thrown in that you didn’t realize until a couple pages in that it was actually telling a story from decades ago. It was just too much.
It was slow to start, but did pick up around half way through. But for me the writing style just got sloppy and confusing, so I didn’t really enjoy it. I also wasn’t a fan of how many twists continued to make its way into the ending of the story. It was just too unrealistic.
I will say I did enjoy the last two sentences of the story though, but overall this wasn’t my favorite read.
Whoa the author sure set this book up to trick the reader. I thought it was obvious until Kara had the great reveal! I can’t say I really cared for any of the characters but the suspense and twists were wonderful!
This thriller kept me engaged from the beginning to the end. A great edge-of-your-seat thriller.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
WOW!!! The author has an incredible gift of writing psychological thrillers…I was just blown away by everything in this book and need to read more by this author. Needless to say I am an instant huge fan!
What a brilliant domestic thriller this is which kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the end. The twists were unending and at one point I had to keep going back to see if I had 'got it right'.
The storyline was excellent and mainly the characters were good and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this great ARC.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC copy of this book to read and review. All of these thoughts and comments are my own.
I think the plot was a really good set up for a physiological thriller. I truly didn’t even expect the plot twist that happened either. I will say that the chapters should’ve stated whose POV it was because it got very confusing trying to keep up and figure out who was speaking. For that reason, it through me off and didn’t make it as enjoyable to read because I had to keep flipping back and trying to figure out whose mind we were in at the time.
I think this could’ve been an amazing book because the potential is 100% there. I just think maybe a few things need to be adjusted. All in all thought; I did enjoy this book and I think anyone who likes thrillers would enjoy this too!
3.5 stars rounded to 4!
Happily married? Or are they really? I didn't really like any of the characters in this book. But thet twists along the storyline were good.
Natalie suspects her husband is having an affair. He shows little interest in her emotionally or otherwise, he seems to have drawn away from her.
To make some extra money, they rent out their spare room to Kara. Soon, there are strange occurances, and Natalie suspects that Kara is responsible. Did she make a major mistake taking Kara into their home?
A quick, but tense read. Victoria Jenkins knows how to hold her reader's attention. Suspicions fall on the wrong characters, and there are so many twists that you do not see coming.
That one major twist is one that is jaw dropping. Absolutely not what you expected!!
Definitely a 5 star read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you net galley and publisher for this ARC. This book wasn’t my favorite from Victoria Jenkins - I found myself not liking any of the characters. I enjoyed the twists and didn’t see them coming.
Happily Married has a very shocking twist that I did not see coming, However, the main character was just a big sack of blandness.
She seems all over the place and lacks common sense. I found myself getting increasingly annoyed with her and her decisions, which is why I give this 3 stars
Happily Married by Victoria Jenkins is a domestic thriller with a twist that will leave your jaw on the floor.
Natalie and Jake are living on a remote farm with their young daughter, Elsie, and are struggling to make a go of things. Taking in a lodger seems the perfect solution to their financial woes, and when young and attractive Kara arrives she seeems, at first, to be the perfect fit. That is, until she isn't.
This is Victoria Jenkins at her very best. Bravo for nailing a wallop of a twist that will shock even the most cynical of readers.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
Oh this book was so naughty!! I love all Jenkins novels - she is so good at hitting us with twisted domestic thrillers - but this one is in a league of its own.
It starts off ok - we are introduced quickly to Natalie, Jake and Elsie - a farming couple, with some obvious marital and financial problems. Enter a hot young lodger - with an agenda and it all looks like your run of the mill, exciting plot. And then WTAF…… who did a what?????? I had to re read the page because I was in such shock - after reading it for the 5th time I was absolutely blown away! What a twist - it was bloody marvellous! And then the whole book takes you on another path - completely different to what you were thinking! Fantastic read!
As soon as I opened this book, I was addicted. I thought it was all rather obvious to me, but dear reader, you should be aware. Not everything is as crystal clear as you think it is. Suddenly I could not believe what I saw. It was the ending of a chapter and I thought WHAT???? Wait a minute. You lost me there. I turned back a page and I reread it again and again and again... Until the penny dropped. BRILLIANT that's the least I can say.
OMG I so love when this happens. It's a bit like you were lulled to sleep in a way because you thought you knew it all, for then to receive a wake up call that makes your head spin.
It felt like Christmas day. The author treats us poor (or should I rather say lucky) readers to a family packet of surprises.
Once again you start wondering whether there are a lot of people left you can trust on this planet.
A very very enjoyable read. I loved it. 5 stars
Thank you
Another whopper of a read from Victoria Jenkins.
A real psychological thriller which had me racing through.
Plenty of twists and turns and a real surprise half way through.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
A fantastic five star read.
Honestly I felt like this book could have been shorter than what it was, but I did enjoy it! I didn’t see that twist coming!
another brilliant read from this author. Natalie loses both her parents in an accident. So she and her husband Jake take over the farm with the help of her oldest friend Tyler. they have a young daughter Elsie who has a heart condition. but money is a problem. Natalie comes up with the idea for a lodger but jake not like the idea but a young woman Kara would love the room. she moves in .Natalie has noticed Jake is cold to her and starts to think he is having an affair with the new lodger and things start to happen that scares Natalie and they have a visit from social services I wont say no more but this book is so addictive and so very twisty
Once again Victoria Jenkins does it again with a excellent psychological thriller. This had me gripped from the very first page until the very last. There was a huge twist which I had to go back and read again cause I was so shocked. Great thriller which I will definitely be recommending to everyone.
I really enjoyed this book and it’s a fantastic domestic thriller.
I love when a book takes me by surprise, and this one certainly did it. I didn’t see the twist coming mid way through the book.
The writing is really strong and fast paced.
It’s another great book by Victoria Jenkins and one that I’d recommend.
