This is a concise introductory guide to ADHD and while geared to adults, could also be useful for teenagers and parents of children with ADHD to help set them up for success later in life.

I particularly appreciated the detailed information on medical and non-medical treatments, as well as information on ADHD medications and considerations for interactions with other substances (e.g., alcohol, caffeine, antidepressants).

I do think the book could have shared information about which jobs people with ADHD may excel at due to the strengths of ADHD, e.g., creative pursuits.

Otherwise, a good quick reference guide, especially if you are learning about ADHD for the first time.

I feel like this book was originally written as a bachelors degree research paper on what ADHD is and common items associated with it. The title and subject were very misleading as it provided very little helpful information with someone who does have adult ADHD. I’m not concerned about being able to operate machinery on medication. I’m concerned about what traits I might have that could be causing stress on relationships, and what I can do to lesson my symptoms. Unfortunately half of the suggestions made were to make a list / journal / stick to a schedule, but anyone struggling from ADHD can tell you that it’s easy to make the list or schedule, and not easy to stick to it. This book provided no real advice and is maybe better for a high school research paper than for actual use.

As someone who is diagnose later on in life with ADHD, this book has a lot of great information on the educational aspects of ADHD as well as some coping help for children and adults.

The tips for maintaining ADHD and the info on medications were super easy to understand and super helpful. The first 30ish pages though felt a little unnecessary and I ended up skimming over it.

According to the blurb I am just the audience this book is aimed at. I was recently diagnosed as an adult with ADHD (inattentive type), and I am just familiarizing myself with the literature.

This was easy to read and understand. It was useful to have all the information there from diagnosis, to different treatments, to common substance interactions with common ADHD medication. However There was not a lot new here that I hadn't already come across both in my local (New Zealand) ADHD community websites, and through my psychiatrist. That may say more about those other sources being good and up to date, but it is worth mentioning that I did not find this information particularly new, and because it covered a lot non of the sections were particularly in depth. (I can also understand that this may have been a deliberate choice considering the target audience struggles with attention, but I wish there was more depth at times)

I also felt that it mainly talked about ADHD as one thing and that being the hyperactive type. I did not feel like it really catered much to my ADHD type (inattentive), though it did describe there were differences in one section. to or discuss how gender can play a diagnosis and symptom, which has been my experience. I found some information was also repeated a few times.

Overall I feel this is a nice handbook which has a summary of most of the important information in it. If you just go to reference book. But because it covers many different topics, each topic is quite brief.

Interesting book, not only for an initial approach to the subject, but also for the various short- and long-term solutions it proposes. Between strategies and possible choices between medications and therapies, it is a more than sufficient text for those who are facing this diagnosis for the first time.

I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
