absolutely love this book!! the plot, the characters, literally everything about it. i love that there’s spice (that’s always an amazing bonus) and can’t wait for pub day!
“You’re playing with fire, bunny,” He said quietly. “Maybe I want to get burned”
Woah, okay Kenzie, I see you!
Every Rule Worth Breaking did not disappoint, friends! I need more Aiden and Kenzie in my life I just love them. I read this book in less than 24 hours and with two toddlers and two jobs that’s a testament to how good it was.
The MCs and their struggles were so relatable and well developed. I felt like I was transported back to crisp fall afternoons walking around my college campus just trying to figure out wtf I was doing with my life. Even though they both bring challenges to the relationship you never doubt that you want them to be together. I love the how Kenzie’s growth with her mental health is portrayed and how hard she works to manage her anxiety is amazing. The relationship with Aiden and Kenzie feels more of a slow build up which I really enjoy. Amanda did an incredible job at showing the struggles with navigating college life, family struggles, college sports and building a relationship.
I cannot say enough good things about this book or articulate well enough how entranced I was reading it. Definitely worth the read.
What you can expect to find
Swoon worthiness (is that a thing?)

Protective older brother

Hockey Player

Fake-ish dating
Little bit of spice
SLAMMMING the 5 STARS!
OOOOOFFFFF Aiden & Kenzie! This is my favorite Amanda Chaperon book thus far. I adored both of these characters so much and the mental health representation. SO WELL DONE.
Aiden is such a big teddy bear and i am here for it! He never stopped fighting for Kenzie and the way he just took care of her was everything. I adored the way he and Jack took care of Kenzie whenever she started having a panic attack when they were out.
Kenzie is just so so so relatable. Anxiety is something so many of us struggle with and Amanda did an amazing job and showing what Kenzie was going through and not just telling us which is one of my favorite pros of an author.
I felt like i was a student at MSU with Kenzie and Aiden.
It’s giving hockey romance, fake dating, enemies to friends to lovers, he falls first, anxiety rep
3.5 stars rounded up. I had to remind myself frequently that I was reading a ‘new adult’ book and think back to being in my early 20s at college to understand these characters better. I felt like the relationship between Kenzie and Aiden gave me whiplash with all its back and forth from one page to the next, but that’s reality at that age. There’s pressure as you reach the end of college to figure out what comes next. Combining the intense life of a student athlete intending to go pro with a student who had taken a couple years away from school and is managing life with anxiety will inevitably lead to some bumps in the road. I liked that the two of them were open and honest with each other about the challenges they were facing. I liked seeing Kenzie open up to the college experience she was hoping for. I could’ve done without her brother’s extreme overprotective nature and his constantly treating her like a child. This wasn’t my favorite book I’ve ever read, but it was a quick and easy college romance read.
3.5 stars
A very adorable college sports romance! I was seeing this all over social media so I dropped everything when I got approved for this book! Thank you NetGalley for the early copy of Every Rule Worth Breaking.
What I liked:
- I loved Berkley! She wasn't even the main character but I really enjoyed her scenes lol
- The author wrote about her alma mater! It was fun to read about the specific campus and town aspects of a real place, that you can tell meant a lot to the author.
- This book unlocked a new trope that I love where the hot-shot college athlete doesn't impress the heroine because a family member of hers is a professional superstar in that sport. It's very specific, but I loved how Kenzie was completely unfazed by Aidan's "status" on campus.
- I always love a book with mental health/ therapy representation
What I didn't like:
- The protective older brother scenario was way over the top in my opinion... I get being protective, but this seemed more toxic than loving. The fact that Kenzie was scared to tell her brother things and not her actual parents was kind of concerning.
- There were sooo many instances with Aidan and his teammates where they made cocky comments about how hot they were/ how amazing their bodies were, etc. Took the conceited college athlete trope to a whole new level.
- I don't like when series intertwine but it's not properly advertised that way? This is the first book in a series but there were 3 storylines that were touched in this book that come to find out, each had their own books in a previous series! This book can 100% be read as a standalone but I feel like I missed some major context.
It was so nice to be back in this little universe Amanda created! Seeing Brent and Berk and Lexie and Mitch again made my heart sing! And seeing Kenzie grow into the person she wanted to be! It was wonderful!
I loved Kenzie and Aiden. They were SO SWEET. Their communication was, not perfect because that’s not possibly, but it was GOOD. Even when they were struggling to get the words out they were able to communicate that which I think goes such a long way! And they were CUTE. The way she resisted him? And didn’t want anything to do with a hockey player? But then they fell IN LOVE. They were sweet.
Kenzie’s anxiety was written really well. It was clear that she knew how to handle it, but also that sometimes it’s not easy just to take a couple of breaths and everything dissolves. And I think Aiden’s struggling to balance hockey and a relationship was written well! It was clear he wanted to be so good at it all, but it’s just not possible without putting in the work.
And Brent and Kenzie. Their relationship is so sweet. He’s such a pain sometimes, that protective older brother thing isn’t always my favorite. But it’s just because we all know that he loves her wants the best for her and thinks he knows everything and he’s just going to be put in his place by Berk anyway!
Special shout out to Mitch and Lexie because I love them the most (sorry not sorry to everyone else it just is what it is!) Kenzie calling Mitch “Uncle Mitch” is quite literally the cutest thing ever!
And I CANNOT WAIT for what comes next!! Especially if the next book is about who I THINK it is!!
Thank you so much to Amanda Chaperon and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Every Rule Worth Breaking by Amanda Chaperon is a great sport romance, I found myself really interested in these two characters.
Thiscwas a sweet, quick read and had very likable characters.
Mackenzie and Aiden were well developed and extremely likable.
I liked how the characters showed a lot of growth throughout.
I was totally into it and fully entertained from beginning to end.
Chaperon’s writing was fun, engaging and I thought she did a really good job at setting the scene.
The book as a whole was entertaining and for my first book by this author I’m very pleased.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Thank You NetGalley and Victory Editing for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Aidan and Kenzie are lovable characters and their friends and family add to the overall plot. Every good romance book needs an obstacle to challenge the love between the main characters. I expected Aidan's hockey dreams to be the main catalyst (and while this did cause some hiccups), Kenzie's mental health was a key plot point as well, giving the story some depth. This book was light and fun while tackling serious issues like loss and mental health. And it had a nice level of spice to keep things interesting. I look forward to checking out the other books by this author!
This is a cute college sport romance! I liked the two main characters together - despite the MMC coming off as a bit of a jerk, himbo type initially he actually had a lot more emotional depth than I was anticipating. The spice was also great and I appreciated how the scenes adding to the build-up/growth of their relationship. There wasn't a 3rd act break up which I always appreciate!
A couple of things kept this at a solid 3.75/4 stars for me:
- 3 (totally unnecessary) mentions of Harry Potter. In the year of our lord 2023, it's my opinion that no books should be publishing that mention HP given the incredibly harmful and disgusting drivel that its creator insists on spouting. The mentions in this book were totally unnecessary and could have been replaced by literally any other reference.
- The story/plot felt just a little repetitive in parts
- I didn't fully understand the third act conflict
Overall, I think I may go back and read Amanda Chaperon's two other books - I did enjoy this one, it was super easy to read and it's rep of anxiety felt pretty realistic.
Thank you to Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for a review.
