I recently read another book by this author, and was surprised to see they had another live book on NetGalley! This one was first published in 2017, but it is being republished this month. I didn’t read the original, so I can’t tell you what, if anything, changed.
There are many narratives running through this book, and in the beginning, it was a bit hard to keep track of. We have the narratives of Child A, Child B, Lissa and her daughter, Rosie, Beverley and Erica. It’s not until a way through that you realize two of those three women are Childs A & B - as minors would be called in a legal case. Long story short, some things happened years ago, and some people aren’t over it.
Basically this is a story of revenge, and it started off very slowly. The characters were all very vague in the beginning and I didn’t get even remotely interested in any of them until the halfway mark. This really started to pick up towards the end, and it was finished very well, but that slow start definitely affects my rating. 3.5 stars for this one.
(Thank you to Boldwood Books, J.A. Baker, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be rereleased on May 29, 2023.)
Loved this. A deep, dark secret ties three women together. This one got quite dark, and it was so delicious. Excellent thriller with some suspense and surprising twists.
In the other mother we eet a mom trying to keep her daughter Rose safe but while doing this also keep secrets from rose she knows there are certain things a mother must put up with all her wrong to give her child a happy life another woman doesn’t have children only a negative mom but she does have a current husband name Warren one woman is out for revenge one just wants to be left alone soon they’ll pass will cross and when they do will one come out Victor and the other the victim? when I say I stayed up all night reading this book I couldn’t even lay down because my heart was palpitating from the beginning to the end the narrative is intense and keeps you definitely wanting to turn the pages. I don’t think I have ever read a book by this author before but I am definitely going to read more by her in the future I usually blow reviews off that say a book gave them heart palpitations but now that I have experienced that exact thing I will never do it again. The other mother by JA Baker is a must read for any thriller fan I loved Liz‘s inner thoughts and how different that was to her public persona this was such a great book and I know I said that’ if you want a definite five star thriller than read this book! I received this book from NetGalley and a publisher that I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Another book about what happens behind closed doors. All in a good read but no real surprises.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Thank you Boldwood books and NetGalley for my ARC of this. Compelling and kind of creepy tale of three woman tied together by a secret in the past. The lengths they will go to protect their current lives. Quick read with a satisfying ending.
A really good book from the very first page, it had everything in it, it kept me interested until the very end
I am always looking to add new authors to my never ending list so decided to try ‘The Other Woman’ by J.A. Baker. ‘The Other Mother’ is a good read and I was impressed enough to want to read other books by this author.
The story follows three women who are brought together by a dark and deadly secret from their past.
Lissy and her daughter Rosie lead a peaceful life in Yorkshire until a shocking event at Rosie’s school turns their world upside down. Erica and Beverley seem to have it all, but behind closed doors, their lives are not what they seem. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that all three women are connected by a tragic event that took place during their school days.
I like the way the author describes the characters, bringing them to life as well as building up the suspense. The pacing of the story is perfect and the story and twists and turns to the very end.
The novel is well written and although it is not my favourite read of the year it showed great promise and led me to order another of the authors books.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Boldwood Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book had me gripped from first page.
Lissy is a single mum doing her best for her daughter they have moved around a lot so her daughter Rosie is unsettled and starts to get in trouble at school. Then Lissy finds a dead animal on her doorstep has someone found Lissy and seeking revenge.
I would definitely recommend this book it was a twisty thriller which had a fantastic ending.
Lissy and her daughter, Rosie, move towns very often, running away from Lissy's past. Lissy had a terrible upbringing, and she vows to protect her daughter.
Rosie is accused of bullying, and sending poison pen letters, and is suspended from school.
Lissy is finding dead animals on her doorstep.
Has she been found by those that seek revenge?
When the truth comes out, all the characters are shocked.
I really struggled to get into this book, in my opinion, the second half is better and more gripping than the first half of the book.
The final few chapters were intense.
The ending was quite a surprise.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Other Mother is just ok for me. I was confused as far as being able to follow the story, no backstories for the women.I did finish the book, but it was a slow, difficult process.
This was a fast and twisty read. It did have multiple point of views and got confusing along the way but ended up coming all together at the end. Full of suspense! Would recommend to those who love psychological thrillers.
I found this book to be quite disjointed. Lot of characters with little backstory. Very confusing for a good part of the story. Things came together near the end, but it was too late. I've read a few books by this author, and they all seem to miss the mark for me. It may just be that I don't click with the writing style.
Thanks to Netgalley, Boldwood books and the author J A Baker. Tense and twisty psychological thriller. Love this! Kept me thinking all the way through. Definitely recommend. 4/5
This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher and the author. Intrigue and mystery combined to complete this novel. Baker is a favorite author. Her stories are mesmerizing. The images and words stay with me. The characters in this book are secretive yet realistic. It was somewhat confusing at times but the ending comes together. Three women held together by a murder.
Three women and one deadly secret.
Lissy is a single mom doing her best. When she moves and her daughter starts getting in trouble she struggles.
Erica and Beverly appear to have perfect lives, but we all know things are often different behind closed doors.
The three women are tied together by the death of a child, and one of them is to blame.
As the truth begins to surface, it’s obvious one of the women is stuck on revenge…will she get her wish? Or will she be stopped in her tracks?
This was my second book by this author and they are interesting books. The downside for me is all the character points of views. There are always so many and while they do add to the story, I find myself confused for a greater part of the book which is a deterrent for me. The writing style is fluid and the books are well paced. This book had some difficult things to read about but the topic was handle as well as it can be and carefully. I really appreciated that. This was a solid read and I think if you go into it knowing that it is a difficult topic you’ll be okay.
Overall a decent read and I would recommend. Check it out! This is a reissue and will come out again May 29th.
Thank you to Boldwood books and netgalley, @netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for this honest opinion.
